A cross-country configurational approach to international academic mobility: exploring mobility effects on academics’ career progression in EU countr…
2022
This study takes a novel perspective on mobility as career script compliance to explore the factors that might influence how mobile academics in a country perceive the impact of international mobility on their overall academic career progression and job options. We conduct a country-level qualitative comparative analysis on a sample of 24 European Union (EU) countries, based on data from European Commission’s MORE3 indicator tool. We find that these perceptions about the impact are shaped by the dominant patterns of mobility in that country, and the general perception of academics in that particular country that international mobility is rewarded in the institutional promotion schemes. CHA on CDK2: a way to identify the best pharmacophore model for the virtual screening of new inhibitors
2018
Cyclin-dependent kinase-2 (CDK2) is a member of serine/threonine protein kinases family. It plays an important role in the regulation events of the eukaryotic cell division cycle, especially during the G1 to S phase transition. Experimental evidences indicate that excessive expression of CDK2 should cause abnormal cell cycle regulation. Therefore, CDK2 has been considered a potential therapeutic target for cancer therapy. In this work, we used a modelling approach that incorporates flexibility based on extensive MD simulations of protein−ligand complexes into structure-based pharmacophore modeling and virtual screening to identify new CDK2 inhibitors. One-hundred and forty-nine CDK2-inhibit…
Retracted Article: Differential detection and quantification of cyclic AMP and other adenosine phosphates in live cells
2017
A new naphthol-based rhodamine derivative (NpRD) has been developed for the selective and differential detection of adenosine 3′,5′-cyclic monophosphate (cAMP) and adenosine phosphates (APs) (ATP, ADP, and AMP) from other nucleotides. The simple detection and quantification of cAMP in human blood cells and in other samples based on the ‘turn on’ fluorescence properties of this chemosensor through colorimetry or fluorometry makes it unique for probable application in high throughput screening.
Design, Synthesis, and Evaluation of New Tripeptides as COX-2 Inhibitors
2013
Cyclooxygenase (COX) is a key enzyme in the biosynthetic pathway leading to the formation of prostaglandins, which are mediators of inflammation. It exists mainly in two isoforms COX-1 and COX-2. The conventional nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have gastrointestinal side effects because they inhibit both isoforms. Recent data demonstrate that the overexpression of these enzymes, and in particular of cyclooxygenases-2, promotes multiple events involved in tumorigenesis; in addition, numerous studies show that the inhibition of cyclooxygenases-2 can delay or prevent certain forms of cancer. Agents that inhibit COX-2 while sparing COX-1 represent a new attractive therapeutic deve…
High-throughput Functional Genomics Identifies Genes That Ameliorate Toxicity Due to Oxidative Stress in Neuronal HT-22 Cells
2004
We describe a novel genetic screen that is performed by transfecting every individual clone of an expression clone collection into a separate population of cells in a highthroughput mode. We combined high-throughput functional genomics with experimental validation to discover human genes that ameliorate cytotoxic responses of neuronal HT-22 cells upon exposure to oxidative stress. A collection of 5,000 human cDNAs in mammalian expression vectors were individually transfected into HT-22 cells, which were then exposed to H2O2. Five genes were found that are known to be involved in pathways of detoxification of peroxide (catalase, glutathione peroxidase-1, peroxiredoxin-1, peroxiredoxin-5, and…
Biogas Cleaning by Hydrogen Sulfide Scrubbing and Bio-oxidation of Captured Sulfides
2015
Hydrogen sulfide and partially carbon dioxide can be absorbed into alkaline washing liquid with nitrates for upgrading a quality of biogas. Sulfides captured into the washing liquid are consequently biologically oxidized in an anoxic bioreactor by autotrophic denitrifying bacteria. Nitrates in the washing liquid serve as electron acceptors for sulfide bio-oxidation. Washing of hydrogen sulfide from biogas was examined in a lab-scale countercurrent scrubber that was packed with plastic carriers and operated at different biogas and washing liquid flows. The hydrogen sulfide concentration in treated biogas was investigated in the range from 3 to 12.3 g m–3. The influence of the hydrogen sulfid…
Berberido aetnensis-Crataegion laciniatae, new orophilous pre-forestal alliance of the class Rhamno-Prunetea
2011
In this paper the results of a phytosociological study carried out on some aspects of shrub vegetation of forest margins are presented, investigated in the higher belt of the Madonie Mts. (Northern-Central Sicily), referred to the order Prunetalia spinosae (Rhamno-Prunetea). Through comparison with other known coenoses in the central- southern part of the Italian Peninsula and in Sicily – especially, the associations of Berberidion vulgaris and those of Pruno-Rubion ulmifolii – a coenological and phytogeographical autonomy has been made evident and has resulted in the recognition of a new alliance, described under the name Berberido aetnensis-Crataegion laciniatae Gianguzzi et al., all. nov…
Application of Molecular Topology to the Prediction of the Reaction Yield and Anticancer Activity of Imidazole and Guanidine Derivatives
2013
In this study molecular topology based QSAR has been applied to predict the reaction yield and anticancer activity of 18 imidazole and guanidine derivatives. Four properties were evaluated, namely reaction yield, anti prostatic-cancer activity, anti breast-cancer activity and anti lung-cancer activity. The four models have been validated by both internal and cross validation, and also by randomness tests. The results obtained are in full agreement with the experimental results and confirm the precision, accuracy and robustness of the method followed. After carrying out a virtual screening upon such models, new imidazole and guanidine derivatives with potential anticancer activity are propos…
