Seasonal population dynamics of Zeuxapta seriolae (Monogenea: Heteraxinidae) parasitising Seriola dumerili (Carangidae) in the Western Mediterranean.

2013

We examined the seasonal and yearly population dynamics of the monogenean pathogen Zeuxapta seriolae on juvenile fish from wild populations of Seriola dumerili. The study is based on bimonthly monitoring between April, 2005 and April, 2007 off Majorca, and newly obtained monogenean population data for juvenile fish from three additional localities in the Western Mediterranean (off Alicante, Corsica and Sardinia). We documented the highest intensities and abundances of Z. seriolae, with mean abundance values similar to or higher than those reported in the single case of wild fish mortalities reported to date. There was a recurrent pattern of seasonal change in infection with Z. seriolae in t…

Host‐parasite relationships between two seal populations and two species of Corynosoma (Acanthocephala) in Finland

1988

Ringed seals (Phoea hispida botnica), from the Bothnian Bay, north-eastern Baltic Sea were examined for acanthocephalan parasites in 1977-1982, and specimens from Lake Saimaa in south-eastern Finland (P. h. saimensis) were examined in 1980-1981. The two seal stocks have been isolated from Arctic stock for 11,000 years and from each other for 8,000 years. Corynosoma strumosum and C. semerme were found in the Baltic seals, but only C. strumosurn in those from the lake. Eighty two of the ringed seals caught in the Bothruan Bay were infected with both Corynosoma species, one with a single infection of C. strumosum and one with C. semerme inautumn. The total number of C. semerme increased in rel…

Selection of low investment in sex in a cyclically parthenogenetic rotifer

2009

Cyclical parthenogens, which combine asexual and sexual reproduction, are good models for research into the ecological and population processes affecting the evolutionary maintenance of sex. Sex in cyclically parthenogenetic rotifers is necessary for diapausing egg production, which is essential to survive adverse conditions between planktonic growing seasons. However, within a planktonic season sexual reproduction prevents clonal proliferation. Hence, clones with a low propensity for sex should be selected, becoming dominant in the population as the growing season progresses. In this context, we studied the dynamics of the heritable variation in propensity for sexual reproduction among clo…

3D inter-subject medical image registration by scatter search

2005

Image registration is a very active research area in computer vision, namely it is used to find a transformation between two images taken under different conditions. Point matching is an image registration approach based on searching for the right pairing of points between the two images. From this matching, the registration transformation we are searching, can be inferred by means of numerical methods. In this paper, we propose a scatter search (SS) algorithm to solve the matching problem. SS is a hybrid metaheuristic with a good trade-off between search space diversification and intensification. On the one hand, diversity is basically introduced from a population-based approach where syst…

Experimental tests on hydrogen production from seawaves energy

2017

In this paper we propose the use of Wave Energy Converter and saline water to produce hydrogen. Two different scheme and technology are proposed. The objective of this research is to design an electrolyzing system capable of utilizing sea. In particular, we present the results obtained by two different prototype of electrolyzer: one with steel electrodes and the second with titanium electrodes. Further experiments were carried out by changing the electrolytic solution of water and sodium chloride in real seawater. Finally, the electrical load has been changed as imposing electric current with a distorted waveform. © 2017 Marine Technology Society.

Improved calculations of beta decay backgrounds to new physics in liquid xenon detectors

2020

We present high-precision theoretical predictions for the electron energy spectra for the ground-state to ground-state $\beta$ decays of $^{214}$Pb, $^{212}$Pb, and $^{85}$Kr most relevant to the background of liquid xenon dark matter detectors. The effects of nuclear structure on the spectral shapes are taken into account using large-scale shell model calculations. Final spectra also include atomic screening and exchange effects. The impact of nuclear structure effects on the $^{214}$Pb and $^{212}$Pb spectra below $\approx100$ keV, pertinent for several searches for new physics, are found to be comparatively larger than those from the atomic effects alone. We find that the full calculatio…

Collaborative Mobile Clouds: An Energy Efficient Paradigm for Content Sharing

2018

On the way toward enabling efficient content distribution, reducing energy consumption and prolonging battery life of mobile equipment, an emerging paradigm, i.e., mobile cloud, which is based on content distribution, was proposed. As a mobile platform that is oriented toward content distribution, mobile cloud is also foreseen as an energy-efficient solution for future wireless networks. The benefits of using CMC for content distribution or distributed computing from social networking perspectives have been studied earlier. In this article, we first present the concepts of CMC and then discuss the energy-efficiency benefits from the system-level point-of-view as well as open challenges in d…

Assessment of the Sabellaria alveolata reefs’ structural features along the Southern coast of Sicily (Strait of Sicily, Mediterranean Sea)

2022

The honeycomb worm Sabellaria alveolata is a gregarious tube-dwelling polychaete that builds remarkable biogenic reefs in marine coastal waters. Sabellaria alveolata reefs are considered valuable marine habitats requiring protection measures for their conservation, as they play a key role in the functioning of coastal ecosystems. Sabellarid reefs are extensively developed along the Atlantic coasts of Europe and reported for the Mediterranean Sea and the Italian coasts, where large reefs have been recorded in several localities. Fragmentary information is available on their health status, Sabellaria reefs thus being listed as “Data Deficient” in the Red List of Marine Habitats. To fill this …
