Visual quality differences between orthokeratology and LASIK to compensate low-moderate myopia.
2013
PURPOSE: To assess the differences in visual performance between orthokeratology (ortho-k) and laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) for the treatment of low-to-moderate myopia. METHODS: An adaptive optics visual simulator (Imagine Eyes) was used to simulate the wavefront aberration patterns induced by ortho-k and LASIK for low and moderate myopia on 10 healthy eyes. Visual acuity (VA) at 100%, 50%, and 10% contrast levels and contrast sensitivity (CS) at 10, 20 and 25 cycles per degree (cpd) were then measured for 3- and 6-mm pupil sizes. RESULTS: Differences in VA for 3-mm pupil diameter were not found between ortho-k and LASIK. For 6-mm pupil size, LASIK provided significantly better VA v…
Antigen-Specific Immunotherapy with Thyrotropin Receptor Peptides in Graves' Hyperthyroidism: A Phase I Study
2019
Background: Graves' disease is one of the most common autoimmune conditions, but treatment remains imperfect. This study explores the first-in-human use of antigen-specific immunotherapy with a combination of two thyrotropin receptor (TSHR) peptides (termed ATX-GD-59) in Graves' hyperthyroidism. Methods: Twelve participants (11 female) with previously untreated mild to moderate Graves' hyperthyroidism were enrolled in a Phase I open label trial to receive 10 doses of ATX-GD-59 administered intradermally over an 18-week period. Adverse events, tolerability, changes in serum free thyroid hormones, and TSHR autoantibodies were measured. Results: Ten subjects received all 10 doses of ATX-GD-59,…
Detection of a germline mutation and somatic homozygous loss of the von Hippel-Lindau tumor-suppressor gene in a family with a de novo mutation
1996
von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) disease is a pleiotropic disorder featuring a variety of malignant and benign tumors of the eye, central nervous system, kidney, and adrenal gland. Recently the VHL gene has been identified in the chromosomal region 3p25-26. Prognosis and successful management of VHL patients and their descendants depend on unambiguous diagnosis. Due to recurrent hemangioblastomas, a29-year-old patient without familial history of VHL disease was diagnosed to be at risk for the disease. Histopathological examination of a small renal mass identified a clear cell tumor with a G1 grading. Genetic characterization of the germline and of the renal tumor was performed. Polymerase chain reac…
De novo 15q21.1q21.2 deletion identified through FBN1 MLPA and refined by 244K array-CGH in a female teenager with incomplete Marfan syndrome
2010
International audience; Interstitial deletions involving the 15q21.1 band are very rare. Only 4 of these cases have been studied using molecular cytogenetic techniques in order to confirm the deletion of the whole FBN1 gene. The presence of clinical features of the Marfan syndrome (MFS) spectrum associated with mental retardation has been described in only 2/4 patients. Here we report on a 16-year-old female referred for suspicion of MFS (positive thumb and wrist sign, scoliosis, joint hyperlaxity, high-arched palate with dental crowding, dysmorphism, mitral insufficiency with dystrophic valve, striae). She had therefore 3 minor criteria according to the Ghent nosology. She also had speech …
Exercise loading history and femoral neck strength in a sideways fall: A three-dimensional finite element modeling study
2016
Over 90% of hip fractures are caused by falls. Due to a fall-induced impact on the greater trochanter, the posterior part of the thin superolateral cortex of the femoral neck is known to experience the highest stress, making it a fracture-prone region. Cortical geometry of the proximal femur, in turn, reflects a mechanically appropriate form with respect to habitual exercise loading. In this finite element (FE) modeling study, we investigated whether specific exercise loading history is associated with femoral neck structural strength and estimated fall-induced stresses along the femoral neck. One hundred and eleven three-dimensional (3D) proximal femur FE models for a sideways falling situ…
Deletion of Chromosome 11q Predicts Response to Anthracycline-Based Chemotherapy in Early Breast Cancer
2007
Abstract Despite the recent consensus on the eligibility of adjuvant systemic therapy in patients with lymph node–negative breast cancer (NNBC) based on clinicopathologic criteria, specific biological markers are needed to predict sensitivity to the different available therapeutic options. We examined the feasibility of developing a genomic predictor of chemotherapy response and recurrence risk in 185 patients with NNBC using assembled arrays containing 2,460 bacterial artificial chromosome clones for scanning the genome for DNA copy number changes. After surgery, 90 patients received anthracycline-based chemotherapy, whereas 95 did not. Tamoxifen was administered to patients with hormone r…
Expression Levels and Clinical-Pathological Correlations of HER2/neu in Primary and Metastatic Human Breast Cancer
2005
In this retrospective study we assessed the expression of the HER2/neu oncogene product in a series of 574 consecutive breast cancer cases, all recruited at the Maurizio Ascoli Cancer Center of Civico Hospital, in Palermo, between January 1998 and June 2003. The HER2/neu expression was evaluated using immunohistochemistry and scored from 0 to +3 as per FDA recommendations. The HER2/neu expression levels were related to the clinical-pathological features of the disease, including tumor size, nodal and menopausal status, estrogen and progesterone receptors, and hormonal or chemotherapeutic treatment. In 108 patients with a follow-up period of 3 years or more, the HER2/neu expression was also …
Immunohistochemical localization of filaggrin in benign, premalignant and malignant cervical tissue.
1994
Epithelial distribution of filaggrin, a histidine-rich protein related to squamous terminal differentiation, was investigated in 87 cervical biopsies using an avidin-biotin-peroxidase technique with a monoclonal anti-human filaggrin antibody (AKH1). Normal squamous cervical epithelium exhibited a positive homogeneous immunoperoxidase stain in the upper parabasal, intermediate and superficial cell layers. Similar findings were obtained in cervical condylomas, although full-thickness staining was observed in 35.7% of the cases (P < 0.001). Filaggrin expression in CIN was inversely related to the severity of the lesion (P < 0.001). An irregular staining pattern was present in most high-grade C…
Innervated Island Flaps in Morphofunctional Vulvar Reconstruction
2000
In this article, the authors present their own experience in vulvar reconstruction following vulvectomy using two different innervated island flaps according to the size and site of the defect. Island-flap mobilization is possible thanks to the rich blood supply of the perineal region. The methods described are a "V-Y amplified sliding flap from the pubis" and a "fasciocutaneous island flap" raised from one or both gluteal folds. The V-Y amplified sliding flap from the pubis is indicated when the defect is symmetric and located anteriorly. This flap is harvested from the pubis and vascularized by the deep arterial network of the pubis. Sensory innervation is provided by branches of the ileo…
Ultrasound-Guided Breast-Conservative Surgery Decreases the Rate of Reoperations for Palpable Breast Cancer
2018
The purpose of this study is to verify whether the performance of ultrasound-guided quadrantectomy (USGQ) versus palpation-guided quadrantectomy (PGQ) can reduce the incidence of positive margins and if it can change the attitude of the surgeon. A retrospective study was conducted on 842 patients underwent quadrantectomy for breast cancer, 332 of them underwent USGQ, whereas 550 underwent PGQ. The histological type of the tumors and the margin status obtained with the histological examination were compared. The histological examination of the surgical specimen showed involvement of the margins in 24/842 patients (2.85%), 22 (2.61%) of them belonged to the PGQ group, and two to the USGQ gro…
