The Relationship Between Sleep Characteristics and Unmet Physical Activity Need in Older Women
2018
Objective: We examined among older women the association of sleep quality, daytime tiredness, and sleep duration with unmet physical activity need, that is, wishing to be more physically active but perceiving no opportunity for it. Method: Cross-sectional logistic regression analyses among women aged 74 to 86 years (Finnish Twin Study on Aging, third wave, n = 302). Results: Thirty-one participants reported unmet physical activity need. Short sleepers had fivefold and long sleepers threefold odds for unmet physical activity need compared with normative sleepers, while for daytime tiredness the odds were double. Presence of daytime tiredness and unmet physical activity coincided with higher…
Giuseppe Sommaruga e i modernisti italiani
2017
A catalog of HLA type, HLA expression, and neo-epitope candidates in human cancer cell lines
2014
Cancer cell lines are a tremendous resource for cancer biology and therapy development. These multipurpose tools are commonly used to examine the genetic origin of cancers, to identify potential novel tumor targets, such as tumor antigens for vaccine devel-opment, and utilized to screen potential therapies in preclinical studies. Mutations, gene expression, and drug sensitivity have been determined for many cell lines using next-generation sequencing (NGS). However, the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) type and HLA expression of tumor cell lines, characterizations necessary for the development of cancer vaccines, have remained largely incomplete and, such information, when available, has been …
Co-production of Hydrogen and Methane From the Organic Fraction of Municipal Solid Waste in a Pilot Scale Dark Fermenter and Methanogenic Biofilm Rea…
2018
The co-production of biohydrogen and methane from the organic fraction of municipal solid waste was investigated using a two-stage AD system, composed of a pilot scale dark fermenter (DF) and a continuous methanogenic biofilm reactor. From the DF process, a biohydrogen yield of 41.7 (± 2.3) ml H2/gVSadded was achieved. The liquid DF effluent (DFE) was rich in short chain volatile fatty acids, i.e., mainly acetic and butyric acid. The DFE was valorized by producing methane in the methanogenic biofilm reactor. Two methanogenic biofilm reactors were used to assess the biotic and abiotic role of the DFE on the performance of the reactors. Regardless of the different DFE feeding (i.e., biotic an…
Over 30% of patients with splenic marginal zone lymphoma express the same immunoglobulin heavy variable gene: ontogenetic implications.
2012
We performed an immunogenetic analysis of 345 IGHV-IGHD-IGHJ rearrangements from 337 cases with primary splenic small B-cell lymphomas of marginal-zone origin. Three immunoglobulin (IG) heavy variable (IGHV) genes accounted for 45.8% of the cases (IGHV1-2, 24.9%; IGHV4-34, 12.8%; IGHV3-23, 8.1%). Particularly for the IGHV1-2 gene, strong biases were evident regarding utilization of different alleles, with 79/86 rearrangements (92%) using allele *04. Among cases more stringently classified as splenic marginal-zone lymphoma (SMZL) thanks to the availability of splenic histopathological specimens, the frequency of IGHV1-2*04 peaked at 31%. The IGHV1-2*04 rearrangements carried significantly lo…
Multimodal Intraoperative Neuromonitoring in Aneurysm Surgery
2017
Following aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage, the primary goal of treatment is to exclude the vascular malformation from the intracranial circulation, while preserving the parent artery. In unruptured aneurysms, the decision whether to treat or observe the malformation is made on a case-by-case basis. In this regard, the ISUIA (International Study of Unruptured Intracranial Aneurysms) investigators suggested that aneurysm size and location were independent predictors for aneurysm rupture.1 ISUIA examined 1692 patients with cerebral aneurysms with a mean follow-up time of 4.1 years. Rupture rates differed depending on size and location, ranging from 0% in aneurysms <7 mm located in the in…
Cosmetic Practices: The Intersection with Aesthetics and Medicine
2018
According to Shusterman, somaesthetics is as an aesthetic-ethical art of living, a practice devoted to living an attractively good life. So the aesthetic experience is not limited to art, but concerns also everyday life; consequently we can explain cosmetic practices (from make-up and hair-styling to plastic surgery) not only as making beauty, but also as feeling beauty, as a feeling better with oneself and with others. When beyond aesthetics purpose there is a functional purpose, cosmetic practices meet the medical science. This essay focuses on Somaesthetics in relation to high culture and popular culture. Firstly, some artistic practices are examined, which operate onto or into the body …
Transcranial Doppler and Cortical Microcirculation at Increased Intracranial Pressure and during the Cushing Response
1995
The effect of increased intracranial pressure on the flow velocity of the basilar artery was measured with transcranial ultrasonic Doppler in New Zealand White rabbits under alpha-chloralose anesthesia and artificial respiration. Laser Doppler flowmetry served to study changes of the cortical microcirculation. The results confirm a high inverse correlation of the diastolic flow velocity, the pulsatility index, and the resistance index with the cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP). During acute intracranial hypertension, however, these parameters do not show a good correlation with the local cortical blood flow. The absence of a correlation was evident over a wide CPP range down to values of 35…
