Kinematics of the ulna during pronation and supination in a cadaver study: implications for elbow arthroplasty

Objective. Aim of this study was to exactly describe and quantify kinematics of the ulna during pro- and supination. Design. Biomechanical study in fresh frozen cadavers. Background. A previous MRI study revealed a varus/valgus motion of the ulna averaging 7.1° during pro-/supination. Axial rotation, however, could not be quantified. Methods. Sixteen arms were examined in a new apparatus that fixed the humerus on a template and allowed forearm rotation. QUESTION Is sonography helpful in facet joint infiltration of the lumbar spine? Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging may distinguish transient osteoporosis of the hip from more severe hip diseases. 12 patients with transient osteoporosis of the hip underwent MR imaging. The initial and follow-up studies included T1- and T2-weighted images in coronal, transverse or sagittal planes. There were revealed 3 stages: diffuse-, focal-, and residual stage. This syndrome is characterized by hip pain, limping, and osteoporosis of the femoral head with preservation of the joint space. The clinical symptoms and abnormalities on MR images disappeared completely within 6-10 months.

The accuracy and reproducibility of cartilage thickness measurements were evaluated with A-mode ultrasound, and the cartilage thickness distribution was examined throughout both knee joints of nine individuals aged between 62 and 94 yr. With the combined osteosynthesis of pathological fractures in association with tumors and/or metastases in mind, E. Merck (Darmstadt, FRG) developed a bone cement containing a cytostatic agent, methotrexate-Palacos flow y (MTX-Pf). The animal-experimental study presented here investigates the tolerability of MTX-Pf in the femurs of rabbits with lateral comparison. In these investigations we used both the concentration of 0.63% MTX, as is currently used in standard clinical surgery, as well as a much higher concentration of 2.5% MTX.
