Recommendations for standardization and phenotype definitions in genetic studies of osteoarthritis: the TREAT-OA consortium

2011

Objective: To address the need for standardization of osteoarthritis (OA) phenotypes by examining the effect of heterogeneity among symptomatic (SOA) and radiographic osteoarthritis (ROA) phenotypes. Methods: Descriptions of OA phenotypes of the 28 studies involved in the TREAT-OA consortium were collected. We investigated whether different OA definitions result in different association results by creating various hip OA definitions in one large population based cohort (the Rotterdam Study I (RSI)) and testing those for association with gender, age and body mass index using one-way ANOVA. For ROA, we standardized the hip-, knee- and hand ROA definitions and calculated prevalence's of RO…

PASSAGE OBLIGATOIRE AUX NORMES COMPTABLES IAS/IFRS, CONTRAINTES EN LIQUIDITE ET RATIONNEMENT DU CREDIT : UNE ETUDE EMPIRIQUE DANS L'INDUSTRIE BANCAIR…

2012

Financial theory indicates that banks dependent on external resources and/or financially fragile have more difficulties in refinancing their operations of credit supply, due to the informational problems they face and/or they cause. In this context, this study tests the hypothesis that the mandatory adoption by banks of the IAS/IFRS accounting standards, known to be of higher quality, leads to an increase in the quantity of loans granted by banks constrained in liquidity, all else equal. Based on a sample of European banks, between 2003 and 2008, we obtain results in favour of this hypothesis.

Have IFRS changed how stock prices are associated with earnings and book values?

2015

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine how the mandatory shift from Norwegian Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (NGAAP) to International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) in Norway affected the valuation weights of earnings and book values, with the aim of gaining insights that are relevant for standard setters, investors and other users of accounting information. Design/methodology/approach – The authors extend the IFRS literature on structural shifts between the pre- and post-adoption periods by comprehensively controlling for factors that vary between the IFRS sample and the domestic Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) sample. Moreover, the tests are des…

Banking Accounting between Prudence and Flexibility

2013

Abstract This paper is about the first year applying the International Financial Reporting Standards in Romanian banking accounting system. The research goal is revealing the effects on valuation of assets, liabilities or risks provisions. Expected results are linked to changing of performance indicators. Besides the need of specific resolution measures, the crises revealed the necessity to adopt prudential regulations for increasing banking accountability. Similar to the other segments of the financial market, the facts have shown that the control over the obeisance of these regulations should be entrusted to a supervising authority.

Optimal vs satisfactory transparency : The impact of global macroeconomic fluctuations on corporate competitiveness

2019

Abstract Being able to separate temporary global macroeconomic influences – caused by fluctuations in exchange rates, interest rates and inflation – from intrinsic performance – related to a superior product, production process or management – is crucial to assessing the development of a firm’s competiveness. Against that background, this paper analyzes institutions’ role in making firms supply outside shareholders with relevant information corresponding to satisfactory transparency from the shareholder perspective. Based on a sample of the 100 largest public European firms, it is found that no firm provided information to a level deemed satisfactory by the outside shareholder. One explanat…

Market risk reporting in banking overcoming the limits of IAS/IFRS and Basel regulation

2017

Market risk in banking activity is becoming a more severe issue day by day for several reasons. Analysing it from a regulatory point of view is fundamental for assessing whether or not banks are in the conditions of disclosing a satisfactory degree of information about their market risk exposure. The two regulatory constraints to consider are International Accounting Standards (IAS/IFRS) and the Basel regulation. Both of them seem to put too many constraints on banks. They turn out to be over-over-regulated. Even if regulators put many efforts in trying to provide a useful regulation for banks' risk reporting and capital adequacy, we are still far from a good regulation. The regulatory proc…

Broadband Fabry–Pérot Resonator From Zerodur for Laser Stabilisation Below 1KHZ Linewidth With < 100 HZ/S Drift and Reduced Sensitivity to Vibrati…

2015

Abstract Here we demonstrate the results of creating a two-mirror Fabry-Pérot resonator (FPR) that allows achieving the spectral width of a stabilised laser line below 1 kHz. It had low expansion Zerodur spacer and broadband high reflectance mirrors (99.85% in the range of 630 to 1140 nm). FPR was vertically mid-plane mounted for reduced sensitivity to vibrations and included in two shields inside a vacuum chamber to lower temperature fluctuations. Peltier element was used for temperature stabilisation at zero-expansion temperature. Pound-Drever-Hall (PDH) technique was applied. The signal from FPR was compared to ultra-stable signal (of about 1 Hz linewidth) to form a beat note signal. For…

A General Methodology for Short-circuit Calculations in Hybrid AC/DC Microgrids

2023

In this paper, the issues related to short-circuit calculations in hybrid AC/DC microgrids are discussed. The reference standard for short-current calculations in DC systems is the IEC 61660, which provides a mathematical formulation of the problem. The standard only includes radial DC grids and does not consider a more complex system, such as meshed DC systems or a hybrid AC/DC microgrid. This paper proposes a generalized approach that can be used independently of the characteristics of the hybrid system. The proposed approach is applied to four test microgrids with different distributed sources and number of nodes and the results are compared with those obtained simulating the same grids …

IFRS Adoption and Unconditional Conservatism: An Accruals-Based Analysis

2020

This paper finds its motivation in the lack of robust results in the literature that analyse the effect on unconditional conservatism of the mandatory adoption of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) by the Spanish listed companies. We provide new evidence by using, for the first time in this context, a non-market-based measure of unconditional conservatism: the accruals-based measure proposed by Givoly and Hayn (2000). We use econometric panel data techniques applied to a panel of 96 non-financial firms and 10 years. The results show evidence that support a significant reduction of the unconditional conservatism of Spanish listed companies due to the adoption of IFRS.

Students' Information Literacy Development as a Guarantee of Qualitative Studies

2015

Publication devoted to information literacy development updates. Information literacy competencies as the basis for the success of a human life takes on a special significance in higher education teaching. Success of this process is driven by university cooperation partners: teachers, librarians and administrations work. Teachers implement information literacy development methods courses, librarians responsible for information resources in institution make up their own training system, but the administration - facilitates the implementation of information literacy and financial support. Competencies based on governmental, professional or institutional defined standards, which can provide an…
