Between idiosyncratic self-interests and professional standards: A contribution to the understanding of participatory journalism in Web 2.0. Results …

2012

Not much is known about participatory journalists in Germany or further afield. We conducted a standardized quantitative online survey of participatory journalists at the German-language website myheimat, a German-based hyperlocal participatory journalism portal with about 37,000 contributors (as at September 2010). The purpose of the survey was to examine the individual characteristics of participatory journalists (sociodemographics, expertise, qualification and gender aspects). The survey also explored why they write articles for myheimat (societal/individual motivations), what they think about their role and function as grassroots journalists (identity/self-concept), what they know and …

Determining a healthy reference range and factors potentially influencing PRO-C3 – A biomarker of liver fibrosis

2021

Background & Aims Progressive fibrosis has been identified as the major predictor of mortality in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Several biomarkers are currently being evaluated for their ability to substitute the liver biopsy as the reference standard. Recent clinical studies in NAFLD/NASH patients support the utility of PRO-C3, a marker of type III collagen formation, as a marker for the degree of fibrosis, disease activity, and effect of treatment. Here we establish the healthy reference range, optimal sample handling conditions for both short- and long-term serum storage, and robustness for the PRO-C3 assay. Methods PRO-C3 was measured in 269 healthy volunteers…

Fuzzy cooperative control of automated ground passenger vehicles

2007

In this paper a fuzzy motion control for cooperative passenger automated vehicles where there are not collisions between the closest ones is proposed. Based on the position of the target and on the initial position of each cooperative vehicle, a supervisory plans nonholonomic circular trajectories which are without intersections, while a fuzzy control strategy assures the asymptotical stability of the motion errors and the reaching of the target with low acceleration values along the planned trajectories. Based on the ISO 2631-1 standard, the saturation properties of the fuzzy maps guarantees low values of the longitudinal and lateral accelerations to assure the comfort of the passengers. T…

Application of hybrid linear ion trap-high resolution mass spectrometry to the analysis of mycotoxins in beer

2011

This paper reports the application of liquid chromatography electrospray ionization ion trap-orbitrap mass spectrometry for the determination of 18 mycotoxins (aflatoxins, fumonisins, trichothecenes, ochratoxin A, sterogmatocystin, beauvaricin, zearalenone and zearalenol) in beer. The extraction procedure was carried out by solid phase extraction (SPE): SPE columns were conditioned with acetonitrile/methanol and water. Beer was loaded onto the column which was washed with water. In these conditions, the recoveries were more than 65% and the relative standard deviation (RSD) were below 18%. The lowest limits of quantification (LLOQ) ranged from 9 to 155 ng ml(-1). Matrix-matched calibration …

New method for determination of ochratoxin A in beer using zinc acetate and solid-phase extraction silica cartridges

2006

Abstract A new method for the determination of ochratoxin A (OTA) in beer has been developed. The new method has been compared with a reference method currently accepted as AOAC official first action. The limits of detection and quantification of the proposed method were 0.0008 and 0.0025 ng/ml, respectively, while they were 0.0025 and 0.0075 ng/ml, respectively, in the AOAC method used as reference. The recovery levels in the 0.025–0.40 ng OTA/ml spiking range for the proposed and the reference methods were 80.6–87.6% and 78.2–83.8%, respectively. The relative standard deviations of recoveries were 2.6–7.5% for the proposed method and 0.7–6.1% for the reference method. Passing and Bablok r…

Multicenter investigation of 1,036 subjects using a standardized method for the assessment of olfactory function combining tests of odor identificati…

2000

“Sniffin’ Sticks” is a test of nasal chemosensory performance that is based on penlike odor-dispensing devices. It is comprised of three tests of olfactory function: tests for odor threshold, discrimination and identification. Previous work has already established its test-retest reliability and validity in comparison to established measures of olfactory sensitivity. The results of this test are presented as a composite TDI score – i.e., the sum of results obtained for threshold, discrimination and identification measures. The present multicenter investigation aimed at providing normative values in relation to different age groups. To this end, 966 patients were investigated in 11 centers. …

Measurement of continuous improvement in the safety of oncologic patients

2013

Equivalent cell temperature calculation for PV modules with variable ideality factors

2012

Outdoor testing of PV modules involves monitoring their operating temperatures which have strong influence on the output power. Back-of-module sensing is associated with significant uncertainty due to temperature drop across the back encapsulation and also due to non-uniform temperature over the module's area. The international standard IEC 60904-5 defines a procedure for calculating the Equivalent Cell Temperature (ECT) of PV devices from their open-circuit voltage. This and other standards (as well as some module performance models) assume a single-exponential I-V curve model with a constant ideality factor. However, this parameter may vary with the illumination level and the operating te…

The CDIO Syllabus 3.0 - An Updated Statement of Goals

2022

The CDIO Initiative is going through a process of reconsidering and updating the CDIO approach for engineering education development. Previous work resulted in substantial updates of the twelve CDIO standards and the introduction of “optional” CDIO standards. This paper reports on a similar review and update of the CDIO Syllabus to version 3.0. It has been developed by a working group consisting of four sub-groups and iterated and refined guided by feedback from the whole CDIO community. There are mainly three external drivers that 18 Proceedings of the 18th International CDIO Conference, hosted by Reykjavik University, Reykjavik Iceland, June 13-15, 2022. motivate the changes: sustainabili…

The Dynamics of (De)Stigmatization : Boundary construction in the nascent category of organic farming

2020

This study finds that it is possible for organizations in emerging categories to resist stigmatization through discursive reconstruction of the central and distinctive characteristics of the category in question. We examined the emerging market of organic farming in Finland and discovered how resistance to stigmatization was both an internal and an external power struggle in the organic farming community. Over time, the label of organic farming was manipulated and the practice of farming was associated with more conventional and familiar contexts, while the stigma was diverted at the same time to biodynamic farming. We develop a process model for removal of stigma from a nascent category t…
