<div> <p>This paper aims to retrace the Armenian Studies’ tradition in Venice. This tradition moved from the firsts scientific publications edited by the Mechitarist Congregation of San Lazzaro to Ca’ Foscari University’s first chair of Armenian Studies, led by father Levon Zekyan in 1976. During that year, Adriano Alpago Novello founded the Study and Documentation Centre of Armenian Culture that in 1992 moved from Milan to Venice. The present paper focuses on the legacy of Alpago Novello through the analysis of his working methods and results in the context of the history of Armenian art and architecture. A votive offering or ex-voto includes a variety of usually non-professional artworks offered to divinities and placed in religious sites to fulfill a vow or in gratitude for recovery from an illness or injury. Unfortunately, the ancient period lacks a scientifically verifiable understanding of the true nature of cancer and its natural history and, consequently, a lack of effective treatment. This paper discusses two ex-votos potentially related to breast cancer distant more than 2000 years, one from the other. The ex-votos convey the complex relationship of humans with illness through an art expression stemming from the heart and minds of ordinary people.

The contribution explores the main players of the art system (artists, curators, critics, collectors, galleries, museums and art fairs) examining this phenomenon in reference to contemporary artists and movements and offering a reflection on the dynamics which regulate this complex and fascinating network.
