Oxidation resistance of LDL is correlated with vitamin E status in beta-thalassemia intermedia.

The alteration of the oxidant/antioxidant balance may affect the susceptibility of low density lipoproteins (LDL) to oxidation in haemolytic disorders such as thalassemia. Thirty patients affected by beta-thalassemia intermedia were examined, and compared with age-matched healthy controls. The mean amount of vitamin E in the thalassemic LDL was lower than control (p0.0001), either when it was calculated on the base of LDL protein (61% decrease) or cholesterol (25% decrease). The LDL resistance to Cu2+-induced oxidation, evaluated as the length of the lag phase before the onset of conjugated diene (CD) lipid hydroperoxide production, was 20% lower than control. The new murine hepatic 3A cell line responds to stress stimuli by activating an efficient Unfolded Protein Response (UPR)

In the present study we have investigated the properties of a novel cell line (3A cells) obtained from the liver of 14.5. days post coitum (dpc) wild-type mouse embryo. 3A cells morphology was characterized by fluorescent localization of F-actin and β-catenin. The expression of specific genes and proteins essential to liver function in these cells was comparable or even more efficient then in the differentiated hepatocytic cell line MMH-D6. 3A cells also showed the capability to excrete molecules in extracellular spaces resembling functional bile canaliculi, glycogen storage activity and the ability to control retinol-binding protein 4 secretion in response to retinol deprivation. A note on Einstein gravity on AdS(3) and boundary conformal field theory

We find a simple relation between the first subleading terms in the asymptotic expansion of the metric field in AdS$_3$, obeying the Brown-Henneaux boundary conditions, and the stress tensor of the underlying Liouville theory on the boundary. We can also provide an more explicit relation between the bulk metric and the boundary conformal field theory when it is described in terms of a free field with a background charge.

Cosmological Horizon Modes and Linear Response in de Sitter Spacetime

Linearized fluctuations of quantized matter fields and the spacetime geometry around de Sitter space are considered in the case that the matter fields are conformally invariant. Taking the unperturbed state of the matter to be the de Sitter invariant Bunch-Davies state, the linear variation of the stress tensor about its self-consistent mean value serves as a source for fluctuations in the geometry through the semiclassical Einstein equations. This linear response framework is used to investigate both the importance of quantum backreaction and the validity of the semiclassical approximation in cosmology. Space and Time Averaged Quantum Stress Tensor Fluctuations

We extend previous work on the numerical diagonalization of quantum stress tensor operators in the Minkowski vacuum state, which considered operators averaged in a finite time interval, to operators averaged in a finite spacetime region. Since real experiments occur over finite volumes and durations, physically meaningful fluctuations may be obtained from stress tensor operators averaged by compactly supported sampling functions in space and time. Large eddy simulations on the effect of the irregular roughness shape on turbulent channel flows

Abstract Large Eddy Simulations (LES) are carried out to investigate on the mean flow in turbulent channel flows over irregular rough surfaces. Here the attention is focused to selectively investigate on the effect induced by crests or cavities of the roughness. The irregular shape is generated through the super-imposition of sinusoidal functions having random amplitude and four different wave-lengths. The irregular roughness profile is reproduced along the spanwise direction in order to obtain a 2D rough shape. Oxidative stress may be induced in bacteria by exogenous biocidal agents and is involved in endogenous metabolism. The oxyR operon is a main sensor of oxidative stress and oxyR-deficient bacteria show enhanced sensitivity to oxidative stress and increased accumulation of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS). Flow cytometric functional assays in bacteria are limited by the impaired penetration of vital dyes trough the cell wall. Escherichia coli B WP2 strains possess an altered cell-wall lipopolysaccharide that leads to increased membrane permeability. Blood flow shapes intravascular pillar geometry in the chick chorioallantoic membrane.

The relative contribution of blood flow to vessel structure remains a fundamental question in biology. To define the influence of intravascular flow fields, we studied tissue islands--here defined as intravascular pillars--in the chick chorioallantoic membrane. Pillars comprised 0.02 to 0.5% of the vascular system in 2-dimensional projection and were predominantly observed at vessel bifurcations.
