Clustering and viscosity in a shear flow of a particulate suspension

A shear flow of particulate suspension is analyzed for the qualitative effect of particle clustering on viscosity using a simple kinetic clustering model and direct numerical simulations. The clusters formed in a Couette flow can be divided into rotating chainlike clusters and layers of particles at the channel walls. The size distribution of the rotating clusters is scale invariant in the small-cluster regime and decreases rapidly above a characteristic length scale that diverges at a jamming transition. A new definition of rigidity,L-rigidity, in general relativity is proposed. This concept is a special class of pseudorigid motions and therefore it depends on the chosen curveL. It is shown that, for slow-rotation steady motions in Minkowski space, weak rigidity andL-rigidity are equivalent. The methods of the PPN approximation are considered. In this formalism, the equations that characterizeL-rigidity are expressed. As a consequence, the baryon mass density is constant in first order, the stress tensor is constant in the comoving system, the Newtonian potential is constant along the lineL, and the gravitational field is constant along the lineL in the comoving system.
Statistical analysis of the influence of forces on particles in EM driven recirculated turbulent flows

The present paper contains an analysis of the statistical distribution of forces affecting non-conducting particles dispersed in an EM induced recirculated flow in induction furnaces. The simulation is conducted adopting the LES-based Euler-Lagrange approach in the limit of dilute conditions (one-way coupling). It is done by means of a development of OpenFOAM software code. The used Lagrange equation for particle tracking includes drag, EM, buoyancy, lift, acceleration and added mass forces. In this work a macroscopic monofluid theory of liquid helium II, which is based on the extended irreversible thermodynamics, is formulated both in the presence and in the absence of dissipative phenomena. The work is a generalization of previous papers, where the extended thermodynamics of an ideal monoatomic fluid was applied to liquid helium II. It is shown that the behavior of helium II can be described by means of an extended thermodynamic theory where four fields, namely density, temperature, velocity, and heat flux are involved as independent fields. On the Path and Area J<sub>x1</sub>-Integral Components and their Relationship to the Out-of-Plane Constraint in Elastic Cracked Plates

In this paper, the path and area components of the Jx1-integral, JP and JA, in three dimensional elastic cracked plates under mode-I loading are investigated aiming at relating them to the out-of-plane constraint conditions resulting from different specimen thicknesses. It is concluded that the JP and JA components of the Jx1-integral vary in the region where the out-of-plane constraint extends. Sufficiently far from the crack front, these integrals tend to stabilize, indicating that the thickness constraint vanishes and that a 2D-like stress and strain fields have been reached. Israel-Stewart theory is a causal, stable formulation of relativistic dissipative fluid dynamics. This theory has been shown to give a decent description of the dynamical behavior of a relativistic fluid in cases where shear stress becomes important. Glutathione content of V79 cells in two- or three-dimensional culture

The cellular glutathione (GSH) content of two- and three-dimensional cell cultures of V79 hamster lung cells has been studied. As previously described, cells in monolayer cultures show a decrease in GSH when they reach the confluent state. Three-dimensional cell cultures (multicell spheroids) allow a smoother transition from the initial proliferating to the nonproliferating status, and they show a central area of necrosis when a certain diameter is reached.
