Short-term exposure to concurrent biotic and abiotic stressors may impair farmed molluscs performance
2022
Global warming, through increasing temperatures, may facilitate the spread and proliferation of outbreak-forming species which may find favourable substrate conditions on artificial aquaculture structures. The presence of stinging organisms (cnidarian hydroids) in the facilities fouling community are a source of pollution that can cause critical problems when in-situ underwater cleaning processes are performed. Multiple stressor experiments were carried out to investigate the cumulative effect on farmed mussels' functional traits when exposed to realistic stressful conditions, including presence of harmful cnidarian cells and environmental conditions of increasing temperature and short-term…
MACROALGAL BIODIVERSITY RESPONSE UNDER A MULTIPLE STRESSOR SCENARIO
2019
Biodiversity-Ecosystem Function experimental stu- dies focusing on marine systems are few and produce contrasting outcomes. Here, we provide experimental proofs on how communities, on a natural gradient of diversity, respond under stressful conditions in inter- tidal habitats. In August 2017 a field experiment was performed in Western Sicily (Italy) in a site charac- terized by tidal pools whose biodiversity structure and composition change as a function of the distance from the low tide mark. The pools closer to the sea are more stable from a thermal and oxic point of view and characterized by high algal biodiversity. Those further from the sea are highly variable with extreme conditions a…

STUDIO DEI MECCANISMI DI MORTE CELLULARI INDOTTI DAL CANNABINOIDE SINTETICO WIN IN CELLULE TUMORALI IN COLTURA
2014

Parthenolide induces caspase-independent cell death mediated by AIF in osteosarcoma and melanoma cells.
2012
Parthenolide, the major bioactive sesquiterpene lactone present in Feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium), has recently attracted considerable attention because of its complex pharmacological action involving anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer effects. However, the mechanism of its cytotoxic effect on tumor cells still remains scarcely defined today. The aim of this study was to analyse the mechanism of parthenolide action on two lines of cancer cells, the human osteosarcoma MG63 and the melanoma SK-MEL-28 cells, on which parthenolide exerted its action inducing similar effects. Staining with Hoechst 33342 showed that parthenolide induced in the first phase of treatment (0-5 h) in m…
Parthenolide induces caspase-independent cell death in osteosarcoma, melanoma and breast cancer cells through the induction of oxidative stress.
2012
Parthenolide, a sesquiterpene lactone found in European feverfew, is used in traditional medicine for its anti-inflammatory activity. In addition, parthenolide has been considered as a novel and effective anti-tumor agent because it induces cytotoxic effects in several tumor cell lines. Our studies demonstrated that parthenolide exerted strong cytotoxic effects in osteosarcoma MG63 and melanoma SK-Mel28 cells in culture. Staining with Hoechst 33342 revealed in most cells after brief periods of treatments (3-5h) chromatin condensation and fragmentation, while only few cells were PI-positive. Prolonging the treatment (5-14h) PI-positive cells strongly augmented, denouncing the increase of nec…
