Subjective stress, objective heart rate variability-based stress, and recovery on workdays among overweight and psychologically distressed individual…

2015

Background: The present study aimed to investigate how subjective self-reported stress is associated with objective heart rate variability (HRV)-based stress and recovery on workdays. Another aim was to investigate how physical activity (PA), body composition, and age are associated with subjective stress, objective stress, and recovery. Methods: Working-age participants (n = 221; 185 women, 36 men) in this cross-sectional study were overweight (body mass index, 25.3-40.1 kg/m(2)) and psychologically distressed (>= 3/12 points on the General Health Questionnaire). Objective stress and recovery were based on HRV recordings over 1-3 workdays. Subjective stress was assessed by the Perceived St…

Plēsēju smaržas un mehāniskā kairinājuma izraisītā stresa kāpura stadijā ietekme uz Drosophila melanogaster pieaugušo īpatņu ķermeņa oglekļa un slāpe…

2020

Vispārīgā stresa paradigma paredz, ka plēsonības izraisīts stress ietekmē upuru vielmaiņu, to ķermenim liekot noārdīt enerģētiskās rezerves, kas noved pie pastiprinātas slāpekļa savienojumu izdalīšanas vidē. Darbā novērtēta plēsēja smaržas un mehāniskā kairinājuma ietekme kāpura stadijā uz augļu mušu imago fenotipu. Noskaidrots, ka plēsēja smaržas izraisīts stress samazina mušu ķermeņa masu, palielina slāpekļa koncentrāciju un samazina oglekļa un slāpekļa koncentrāciju attiecību. Līdzīgas fenotipa izmaiņas iepriekš novērotas audzējot kāpurus kopā ar dzīvu zirnekli un liecina, ka kāpuru ožai plēsēja atpazīšanā ir būtiskāka nozīme nekā citām maņām. Rezultāti ir pretrunā vispārīgajai stresa pa…

Effects of Polyacrylic Acid Pre-Treatment on Bonded-Dentine Interfaces Created with a Modern Bioactive Resin-Modified Glass Ionomer Cement and Subjec…

2018

Objectives: Resin-modified glass ionomer cements (RMGIC) are considered excellent restorative materials with unique therapeutic and anti-cariogenic activity. However, concerns exist regarding the use of polyacrylic acid as a dentine conditioner as it may influence the bonding performance of RMGIC. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different protocols for cycling mechanical stress on the bond durability and interfacial ultramorphology of a modern RMGIC applied to dentine pre-treated with/without polyacrylic acid conditioner (PAA). Methods: The RMGIC was applied onto human dentine specimens prepared with silicon-carbide (SiC) abrasive paper with or without the use of a PAA c…

Simple metal under tensile stress: layer-dependent herringbone reconstruction of thin potassium films on graphite

2014

While understanding the properties of materials under stress is fundamentally important, designing experiments to probe the effects of large tensile stress is difficult. Here tensile stress is created in thin films of potassium (up to 4 atomic layers) by epitaxial growth on a rigid support, graphite. We find that this “simple” metal shows a long-range, periodic “herringbone” reconstruction, observed in 2- and 3- (but not 1- and 4-) layer films by low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Such a pattern has never been observed in a simple metal. Density functional theory (DFT) simulations indicate that the reconstruction consists of self-aligned stripes of enhanced atom density fo…

Oxidative Stress in the Pathogenesis of Aorta Diseases as a Source of Potential Biomarkers and Therapeutic Targets, with a Particular Focus on Ascend…

2022

Aorta diseases, such as ascending aorta aneurysm (AsAA), are complex pathologies, currently defined as inflammatory diseases with a strong genetic susceptibility. They are difficult to manage, being insidious and silent pathologies whose diagnosis is based only on imaging data. No diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers or markers of outcome have been known until now. Thus, their identification is imperative. Certainly, a deep understanding of the mechanisms and pathways involved in their pathogenesis might help in such research. Recently, the key role of oxidative stress (OS) on the pathophysiology of aorta disease has emerged. Here, we describe and discuss these aspects by revealing some OS …
