Self-assembly in surfactant-based liquid mixtures: Octanoic acid/Bis(2-ethylhexyl)amine systems

Abstract The physico-chemical properties of Bis(2-ethylhexyl)amine (BEEA) plus octanoic acid (OA) mixtures have been investigated by IR, SAXS, WAXS, viscosimetry, and AC complex impedance spectroscopy in the whole composition range. Mainly driven by proton transfer from the acidic OA to the basic BEEA, the formation of stoichiometrically well-defined adducts takes place in the mixtures. This causes the slowing down of molecular dynamics and the increase in charge carrier number density. Interestingly, while the pure components possess no significant conductivity (about 10−12 S cm−1 at 25 °C), their mixtures show a composition-dependent enhanced conductivity (up to about 10−5 S cm−1), i.e., …

Bis(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid/bis(2-ethylhexyl)amine mixtures as solvent media for lithium-ions: A dynamical study

Abstract The self-diffusion coefficient, the spin-lattice relaxation times and ionic conductivity of lithium ions in liquid mixtures composed of bis(2-ethylhexyl)amine (BEEA) and bis(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid (HDEHP) have been thoroughly investigated as a function of composition and temperature by NMR spectroscopy and conductometry. While the temperature and composition dependence of diffusion coefficients of lithium ions follow the same trend observed for those of the surfactant molecules, the spin-lattice relaxation times of lithium ions and 1 H are remarkably different. Structural effects of macrocyclic compounds and their partition in sodium dodecylsulphate aqueous solutions

The partition of 1,4,7,10,13,16-esaoxacyclooctadecane (18C6), 4,7,13,16-tetraoxa-1,10-diazacyclooctadecane (2.2), 2,5,8,11,14,17-esaoxabicyclo[16.4.0]dicosane (B18C6) and 2,5,8,15,18,21-esoxatricyclo[20.4.0.09.14]esacosane (Cy218C6) in sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) aqueous solutions and their effect on the structure of surfactant aggregates has been investigated by small-angle neutron scattering. Results from data analysis have shown that by increasing macrocycle concentration the SDS micelles dimensions reduce for all systems investigated. The structural effect of trehalose confined in water-containing sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate (AOT) reversed micelles at water to AOT molar ratio W = 5 and 10 as a function of the trehalose to AOT molar ratio T (0 < T < 0.1) has been investigated by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). SANS data analysis is consistent with the hypothesis that trehalose is encapsulated within the quite spherical hydrophilic micellar cores of water-containing reversed micelles, causing an increase of the aggregate size and a decrease of the polydispersion. Atomic absorption spectrometric determination of molybdenum in lubricating oils with use of emulsions

Abstract Samples (0.1 g) containing molybdenum disulphide are digested with aqua regia or with a (1 + 1) hydrofluoric/nitric acid mixture, without complete destruction of the matrix, and the molybdenum is determined in an air/acetylene flame, after emulsification with a non-ionic surfactant (Nemol K-39). The detection limit is ca. 30 μg Mo g−1, and the r.s.d. is 2.9% for 6 analyses of a sample containing 6.5 mg Mo g−1.

Interaction of diazepam with surfactants. Spectrophotometric and spectrofluorometric study

Abstract The interaction of diazepam with non-ionic, anionic and cationic surfactants has been studied spectrophotometrically and fluorometrically. It has been verified that the absorption spectrum of diazepam is not modified in micellar medium. However, a dramatic five-fold increase in fluorescence sensitivity is observed in the presence of sodium lauryl sulphate (SDS). The experimental conditions, temperature, pH and surfactant concentration have been optimized to improve the fluorometric determination of diazepam and a detection limit of 0,04 ppmhas been obtained.

Micellar enhanced fluorimetric determination of carbendazim in natural waters

Abstract A micellar enhanced flow-injection fluorimetric method was developed for the determination of carbendazim in natural water samples. The method is based on the direct injection of 500 μ1 of water into a three-channel flow manifold in which the samples are merged with a buffer solution and subsequently with a surfactant solution. On-line speciation of mercury in fish by cold vapour atomic fluorescence through ultrasound-assisted extraction

A fully mechanized procedure has been developed for the speciation of mercury in fish samples by using cold vapour atomic fluorescence spectrometry (CV-AFS). Sample slurries in an acid mixture in the presence of a surfactant and with traces of K2Cr2O7, were injected into a flow system, sonicated and merged with 1 ml of an oxidant mixture of KBr/KBrO3 heated at 50 °C in a water bath and total Hg determined by CV-AFS. Simultaneous detection of hazardous skin whitening agents in Indian cosmetic products using a green chromatographic technique

The present work mainly highlights the simultaneous detection of four skin whitening agents i.e. hydroquinone (HQ), resorcinol (RS), catechol (CC) and 3,3′-dichlorobenzidine (DCB) in facial creams and body lotion. Among these, the first three are positional isomers of dihydroxybenzene so simultaneous separation is difficult with the conventional reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatographic technique (RP-HPLC). An environmentally friendly multicommutated alternative to the reference method for anionic surfactant determination in water

Abstract It has been developed a fully mechanized procedure for the spectrophotometric determination of anionic surfactants in water expressed in terms of SDS concentration. The reference method, based on the reaction of SDS with methylene blue (MB) followed by extraction in chloroform, was mechanized in order to reduce the consumption of organic solvents. The system was based on the multicommutation approach and provided a 35 times reduction of the waste production without sacrificing the figures of merit of the method in terms of sensitivity and repeatability, for a dynamic linear range from 0.2 to 1.7 mg l−1.
