Abstract Keratinocyte growth factor protects the lung against various injurious stimuli. The protective mechanisms, however, are not yet fully understood. The aim of this study is to determine the influence of keratinocyte growth factor on the pulmonary capacity to synthesize acetylcholine, a potent regulator of pulmonary functions which is potentially involved in lung damage. Fungal infections are a growing global health and agricultural threat, and current chemical antifungals may induce various side-effects. Thus, nanoparticles are investigated as potential novel antifungals. We report that nanoparticles' antifungal activity strongly depends on their binding to fungal spores, focusing on the clinically important fungal pathogen Aspergillus fumigatus as well as common plant pathogens, such as Botrytis cinerea. Using electrodispersion of metallic iron in an aqueous environment without additional reagents we create a chemically clean model system based on nanosized synthetic magnetite where the details of magnetic metal oxide – surfactant chemisorption can be studied by high fidelity magnetometry with nanometric precision. A comparative analysis of model colloidal solutions based on oleic acid and iron Fe2+ oleate indicates a significant influence of the mode of surfactant adsorption on the magnetic diameter of the particles.

In this paper, the experimental conditions for preparing ampicillin-loaded polyethylcyanoacrylate (PECA) nanoparticles are described. The effects of drug concentration and surfactant type in the polymerization medium on the particle size distribution and loading capacity were studied. The results of these studies show that only the type of surfactant has an impact on the nanoparticle dimensions. The release rate of ampicillin from PECA nanoparticles at pH 7.4 (extracellular value pH) performed either with and without esterases, show that the drug release is considerably increased in the presence of these exzymes. Effect of surfactants and drying rate on barrier properties of emulsified edible films

Summary The effects of globule size, nature and concentration of surfactant, and drying duration of water vapour transmission rate and tensile strength of emulsified edible barriers containing methylcellulose and paraffin wax, were measured. of the six surfactants tested, 0.6% purified glycerol monostearate (GMS) produced films with the lowest water vapour transmission rates and the highest mechanical resistance. Longer drying times of film-forming emulsions produced better barrier and mechanical properties. Control of the film forming emulsion stability allowed the reduction of the water vapour transfer rate by an order of magnitude.

Inkjet printing is here employed for the first time as a method to produce femtoliter-scale oil droplets dispersed in water. In particular, picoliter-scale fluorinated oil (FC40) droplets are printed in the presence of perfluoro-1-octanol surfactant at a velocity higher than 5 m/s. Femtoliter-scale oil droplets in water are spontaneously formed through a fragmentation process at the water/air interface using minute amounts of nonionic surfactant (down to 0.003% v/v of Tween 80).
