NK/T-cell lymphomas 'nasal type': an italian multicentric retrospective survey
2006
Abstrac Objective: To evaluate the clinical characteristics and outcome of NK/T-cell lymphoma ‘nasal type’ developed in Italian patients. Patients: Between 1997 and 2004, 26 new cases of NK/T-cell lymphoma ‘nasal type’ were diagnosed in 10 Italian Hematology institutions. Results: All patients were Caucasian, male/female ratio was 19/7, with a median age of 50 years (range 20–80). In 23 cases presentation at the onset was in the nasal cavity or adjacent structures, in two cases the lymphoma onset with skin lesions was followed successively by rhynopharyngeal dissemination, while the remaining case had bone marrow and lymph node involvement followed by oro-pharyngeal involvement. Regarding t…
Handgrip strength is associated with suicidal thoughts in men: Cross-sectional analyses from NHANES
2019
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between handgrip strength and suicidal thoughts in a representative sample of the US adult population using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). POPULATION AND METHODS: Data from two waves of NHANES (2011-2014) were aggregated. Handgrip strength in kilogram (kg) was defined as the maximum value from the dominant hand. Suicidal thoughts were assessed using one question "Over the last 2 weeks, how often have you been bothered by the following problem: Thoughts that you would be better off dead or of hurting yourself in some way?" and dichotomized to no (not at all) and yes (several days/ more than half the days/ nea…

Appropriateness of upper-GI endoscopy: an Italian survey on behalf of the Italian Society of Digestive Endoscopy
2007
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Open-access endoscopy allows physicians to directly schedule endoscopic procedures for their patients without prior consultation. An evaluation of both appropriateness and diagnostic yield of endoscopic procedures is critical when assessing the costs and benefits of endoscopy in an open-access setting. The aim of this Italian multicenter study was to assess the appropriate use of upper endoscopy (EGD) in an open-access system and to establish the yield of diagnostic information relevant to patient care. DESIGN AND SETTING: Cross-sectional, prospective, multicenter study. PATIENTS: A total of 6270 patients referred to 44 Italian centers for open-access EGD during 1 …
The early clinical phenotype of Fabry disease: a study on 35 European children and adolescents.
2003
Fabry disease (FD) is a debilitating progressive multisystem X-linked lysosomal storage disorder. It was generally believed that the disease affects only adult males. Through systematic pedigree analysis, we identified 35 paediatric FD patients (age 1 to 21 years, mean 12.6 years) in 25 families. Predominant signs in this cohort were: acroparesthesia, hypohidrosis, and cornea verticillata. Neurological and psychological changes, such as tinnitus, recurrent vertigo, headache, diminished level of activity, fatigue, and depression were often observed. Angiokeratoma and gastrointestinal symptoms were frequent. Some patients also showed cardiac abnormalities. Six children and adolescents (three …
Door-to-door prevalence survey of epilepsy in three Sicilian municipalities
2001
A door-to-door prevalence survey of epilepsy was conducted in 3 Sicilian municipalities, as of November 1, 1987. In phase 1, the screening by questionnaire of 24,496 eligible subjects (participation = 92%) identified 544 suspected to have epilepsy. In phase 2, neurological evaluation of the 544 subjects yielded 111 with epilepsy. Of the 111 subjects, 103 (93%) had been previously diagnosed, 68 (61%) were taking antiepileptic medication, and 81 (73%) had active epilepsy. Referring to the 81 subjects with active epilepsy, the seizure type was generalized in 60 (74%), partial in 19 (23%) and undetermined in 2 (3%). The prevalence of active epilepsy (per 1,000 population) was 3.3 overall, 3.5 f…
A nationwide survey of hereditary angioedema due to C1 inhibitor deficiency in Italy
2014
Introduction Hereditary angioedema due to C1-inhibitor deficiency (C1-INH-HAE type I) or dysfunction (C1-INH-HAE type II) is a rare disease characterized by recurrent episodes of edema with an estimated frequency of 1:50,000 in the global population without racial or gender differences. In this study we present the results of a nationwide survey of C1-INH-HAE patients referring to 17 Italian centers, the Italian network for C1-INH-HAE, ITACA. Methods Italian patients diagnosed with C1-INH-HAE from 1973 to 2013 were included in the study. Diagnosis of C1-INH-HAE was based on family and/or personal history of recurrent angioedema without urticaria and on antigenic and/or functional C1-INH def…
Oral health survey of the adult population of the Valencia region (Spain).
2009
Objectives: Ascertain the oral health status of the adult population in the Valencia region of Spain. Study design: A cross sectional prevalence study was conducted on a sample of 1264 adults, comprising 733 individuals aged 35-44 years and 531 individuals aged 65-74 years. Data collection was carried out in 2006. In both age groups (younger adults and older adults), the clinical examinations were carried out by calibrated dentists (Kappa >0.76). Results: The caries prevalence in the group of 35-44 year-old subjects was 92.2% (DMFT=7.64). In the group of 65-74 year-old subjects, it was 98.3% (DMFT=16.38). The F/DMFT percentage of the younger adults was 66% and that of the older adults was 1…
Effect of maternal high dosages of folic acid supplements on neurocognitive development in children at 4-5 y of age: the prospective birth cohort Inf…
2017
Background: The benefits of the use of folic acid supplements (FASs) during the periconception period to prevent neural tube defects and to ensure normal brain development in offspring are well known. There is concern, however, about the long-term effects of the maternal use of high dosages of FASs that exceed the Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL) (≥1000 μg/d) on child neurocognitive outcomes. Objective: The objective of the study was to examine the association between the use of high dosages of FASs during pregnancy and child neuropsychological development at ages 4-5 y.Design: The multicenter prospective mother-child cohort study, the Infancia y Medio Ambiente (INMA) Project, was conducted…
Prevalence of Parkinson's disease and other types of parkinsonism in the Aeolian Archipelago, Sicily.
2007
Abstract Objective To estimate prevalence of Parkinson's disease (PD) and other types of parkinsonism in the Aeolian Archipelago, Sicily. Methods We studied the frequency of PD and other types of parkinsonism in the Aeolian Archipelago (population 13,431). All potential cases were identified from available medical information sources. To ensure the completeness of the case-findings, a screening questionnaire was also mailed to residents aged 40 years and over. Subjects were considered prevalent if they fulfilled the SNES diagnostic criteria for PD, on prevalence day (January 1, 2001). Results We identified 17 patients with parkinsonism from medical sources, and 4 from mail-survey. Prevalenc…
