Current Practices in the Management of Pulmonary Ground-Glass Opacities: A Survey of SICT Members

2018

Background Several gray areas and controversies exist concerning the management of pulmonary ground-glass opacities (GGOs), and there is a lack of consensus among clinicians on this topic. One of the main aims of the Italian Society of Thoracic Surgery is to promote education and research, so we decided to perform a survey on this topic to estimate current trends in practice in a large sample of thoracic surgeons. Methods A total of 160 thoracic surgeons responded, namely, completed our questionnaire (response rate, 53%; 160 of 302). The survey was composed of 36 questions divided into six subsections: (1) demographic characteristics of the respondents; (2) terminology and taxonomy; (3) rad…

Eligibility for treatment with omalizumab in Italy and Germany.

2013

Summary Omalizumab is an add-on therapy for patients with uncontrolled severe allergic asthma. In Europe, patients must fulfil a number of additional criteria to become eligible for omalizumab therapy, creating a challenge for epidemiology studies to quantify the potential patient pool. Thus, and in the absence of robust data, the number of omalizumab-eligible patients has remained unclear. To assess eligible patient numbers, a chart-audit design approach was employed to measure epidemiology variables based on patient-level data. 770 patient charts were reviewed in designated towns in Germany and Italy, in collaboration with >200 primary care physicians (PCPs) and respiratory specialists (R…

Fixed But Not Autoadjusting Positive Airway Pressure Attenuates the Time-dependent Decline in Glomerular Filtration Rate in Patients With OSA

2018

Abstract: BACKGROUND: The impact of treating OSA on renal function decline is controversial. Previous studies usually included small samples and did not consider specific effects of different CPAP modalities. The aim of this study was to evaluate the respective influence of fixed and autoadjusting CPAP modes on estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) in a large sample of patients derived from the prospective European Sleep Apnea Database cohort. METHODS: In patients of the European Sleep Apnea Database, eGFR prior to and after follow-up was calculated by using the Chronic Kidney Disease-Epidemiology Collaboration equation. Three study groups were investigated: untreated patients (n = 14…

Fit-for-purpose chromatographic method for the determination of amikacin in human plasma for the dosage control of patients

2015

In this paper, a simple, rapid and sensitive method based on liquid chromatography with fluorimetric detection (HPLC-FLD) for the determination of amikacin (AMK) in human plasma is developed. Determination is performed by pre-column derivatization of AMK with ortho-phtalaldehyde (OPA) in presence of N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) at pH 9.5 for 5 min at 80 °C. In our knowledge, this is the first time that NAC has been used in AMK derivatization. Derivatization conditions (pH, AMK/OPA/NAC molar ratios, temperature and reaction time) are optimized to obtain a single and stable, at room temperature, derivative. Separation of the derivative is achieved on a reversed phase LC column (Kromasil C18, 5 μ…

Assessment of process stability and capability in a manufacturing organization: a case study

2021

Quality is considered asthe principal factor that determines the long-termsuccess or failure of any organization. Organizations perform quality control by monitoring process output using Statistical Quality Control, performed as part of the production process (Statistical Process Control, SPC) or as a final quality control check (Acceptance Sampling).SPC is a major quality management statistical tool and its instruments (control charts and capability analysis) are applied to virtually any type of organization (manufacturing, services or transactions - for example, those involving data, communications, software, or movement of materials). The aim of this paper is to present a case study, rea…

Infection risks of city canal swimming events in the Netherlands in 2016.

2018

Introduction Swimming events in city canals are gaining popularity in the Netherlands, even though canal water is usually not officially designated for recreational use. Knowledge regarding the risk of infection after swimming in canals is limited. An outbreak was reported in 2015 following a canal swimming event in Utrecht, the Netherlands. Local governments were concerned about the health risks of such events. In order to assess the safety of canal swimming, the Public Health Service (PHS) prospectively investigated two city canal swimming events in 2015. In 2016, we repeated this study, aiming to prospectively determine the risks of infection during two urban swimming events, the Utrecht…

Auschwitz e il Blocco 21. Contemporaneità intempestiva e rappresentazione interdetta

2010

Seeking the Holy Grail: robust chronologies from archaeology and radiocarbon dating combined

2018

The strengths of formal Bayesian chronological modelling are restated, combining as it does knowledge of the archaeology with the radiocarbon dating of carefully chosen samples of known taphonomy in association with diagnostic material culture. The risks of dating bone samples are reviewed, along with a brief history of the development of approaches to the radiocarbon dating of bone. In reply to Strien (2017), selected topics concerned with the emergence and aftermath of the LBK are discussed, as well as the early Vinča, Ražište and Hinkelstein sequences. The need for rigour in an approach which combines archaeology and radiocarbon dating is underlined.

The recovery of the central "Tifeo" Augusta (SR), a valuable work of the …
