Browsing the information highway while driving: three in-vehicle touch screen scrolling methods and driver distraction

Distraction effects of three alternative touch screen scrolling methods for searching music tracks on a mobile device were studied in a driving simulation experiment with 24 participants. Page-bypage scrolling methods with Buttons or Swipe that better facilitate resumption of visual search following interruptions were expected to lead to more consistent in-vehicle glance durations and thus, on less severe distraction effects than Kinetic scrolling. The control theory of driving suggests that driver distraction can be analyzed as a breakdown of control at three levels. Common approach for analyzing distraction experimentally is to utilize capacity-based measures to assess distraction at the level of operational control. Summary Biomonitoring data on soil Collembola collected over a six year period (1992-1997) in Scots pine ( Pinus sylvestris L.) forest in the Northern Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve, northern Latvia, are analysed. Monitoring was conducted in three plots: young (30-40 years), middle-aged (50—70 years), and old (150—200 years) pine stands. Sampling was performed once a year, in late August or early September, according to a systematic sampling scheme. Blood analysis is used to evaluate the effects of various environmental factors on fishes and to assess fish health and welfare. Fish blood is routinely sampled from the caudal vein or the heart. This paper presents the details of the EDGG sampling methodology and its underlying rationales. The methodology has been applied during EDGG Research Expeditions and EDGG Field Workshops since 2009, and has been subsequently adopted by various other researchers.
