Analgesic and physiological effects in conscious sedation with different nitrous oxide concentrations

2015

Objectives: to study the physiological changes, as well as the psychosedative and analgesic effects of nitrous oxide, in experimental conditions. Study Design: 101 dental students volunteers participated in a single nitrous oxide sedation session without dental treatment. Signs and symptoms were registered during and after the procedure. Pulse rate and hemoglobin oxygen saturation were monitored at: 100 per cent O 2 , 30 per cent N 2 O, 50 per cent N 2 O and 5 minutes after 100 per cent O 2 . A Likert scale was used to evaluate pain perception. The analgesic effects of nitrous oxide were evaluated at: 30 per cent N 2 O, 50 per cent N 2 O, and five minutes postoperatively. Results: Pulse rat…

Theoretical Basis Versus Clinical Practice of Oxygen Parameters of Blood

1996

Under optimal conditions all oxygen parameters of human blood are defined at a theoretical basis, accepted and understood by the clinicians, measured correctly by instruments of different manufacturers and, therefore, leading to clear diagnoses for the patients.

PaO2oscillations caused by cyclic alveolar recruitment can be monitored in pig buccal mucosa microcirculation

2012

BACKGROUND Cyclic alveolar recruitment and derecruitment play a role in the pathomechanism of acute lung injury and may lead to arterial partial pressure of oxygen (PaO(2) ) oscillations within the respiratory cycle. It remains unknown, however, if these PaO(2) oscillations are transmitted to the microcirculation. The present study investigates if PaO(2) oscillations can be detected in the pig buccal mucosa microcirculation. METHODS Respiratory failure was induced by surfactant depletion in seven pigs. PaO(2) oscillations caused by cyclic recruitment and derecruitment were measured in the thoracic aorta by fast fluorescence quenching of oxygen technology. Haemoglobin oxygen saturation, haem…

Does Oxygen Content Play a Role in Spontaneous Closure of Perimembranous Ventricular Septal Defects?

2021

(1) Background: the impact of a series of laboratory parameters (haemoglobin, haematocrit, foetal haemoglobin, peripheral oxygen saturation, iron, transferrin, ferritin, and albumin) on perimembranous ventricular septal defects spontaneous healing was tested. (2) Methods: one hundred and seven patients were enrolled in the study (57% males; mean age 2.1 ± 0.4 years) and were subsequently subdivided into two groups: self-healing (n = 36) and in need of intervention (n = 71). Self-healing subjects were defined on the basis of an absence of residual shunts at colorDoppler across the previous defect. (3) Results: no statistically significant differences were reported in the size of perimembrano…

Peripheral Intravenous Access in Preterm Neonates during Postnatal Stabilization: Feasibility and Safety

2017

Background Current European Guideline for resuscitation recommends a centrally positioned umbilical venous catheter as the best option for administering necessary drugs. Especially in preterm infants, a frequently used alternative is the peripheral venous catheter. Methods Two randomized controlled studies were conducted at the Division of Neonatology, Medical University of Graz. During neonatal resuscitation, a standardized protocol was filled out by an uninvolved observer including time points after birth of all attempts of venous puncture, time point of successful venous puncture, and total number of needed attempts. Arterial oxygen saturation (SpO2) and heart rate (HR) were measured usi…

Transmission of arterial oxygen partial pressure oscillations to the cerebral microcirculation in a porcine model of acute lung injury caused by cycl…

2013

Cyclic recruitment and derecruitment (R/D) play a key role in the pathomechanism of acute lung injury (ALI) leading to respiration-dependent oscillations of arterial partial pressure of oxygen (Pa(O(2))). These Pa(O(2)) oscillations could also be forwarded to the cerebral microcirculation. In 12 pigs, partial pressure of oxygen was measured in the thoracic aorta (Pa(O(2))) and subcortical cerebral tissue (Pbr(O(2))). Cerebral cortical haemoglobin oxygen saturation (Sbr(O(2))), cerebral blood flow (CBF), and peripheral haemoglobin saturation (Sp(O(2))) were assessed by spectroscopy and laser Doppler flowmetry. Measurements at different fractions of inspired oxygen (F(I(O(2)))) were performed …

Right ventricular function and iron deficiency in acute heart failure

2021

Abstract Aims Iron deficiency (ID) is a frequent finding in patients with chronic and acute heart failure (AHF) along the full spectrum of left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF). Iron deficiency has been related to ventricular systolic dysfunction, but its role in right ventricular function has not been evaluated. We sought to evaluate whether ID identifies patients with greater right ventricular dysfunction in the setting of AHF. Methods and results We prospectively included 903 patients admitted with AHF. Right systolic function was evaluated by tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE) and the ratio TAPSE/pulmonary artery systolic pressure (TAPSE/PASP). Iron deficiency was de…

Novel hybrid technology for early diagnostics of sepsis

2017

Sepsis is a potentially fatal disease with mortality rate as high as 50% in patients with septic shock; mortality rate can increase by 7.6% per hour if appropriate treatment is not started. Internationally accepted guidelines for diagnosis of sepsis rely on vital sign monitoring and laboratory tests in order to recognize organ failure. This pilot study aims to explore the potential of hyperspectral and thermal imaging techniques to identify and quantify early alterations in skin oxygenation and perfusion induced by sepsis. The study comprises both physiological model experiments on healthy volunteers in a laboratory environment, as well as screening case series of patients with septic shock…

Determinants of helicopter benefit for the transport of severe trauma patients

2013

Recently, Galvagno commented on the paper of Andruszkow and colleagues and summarized the studies using multivariate logistic regression to compare helicopter transport (HT) versus ground transport of trauma patients [1,2]. The authors did not mention our analysis of 1,958 trauma patients (26% transported by HT) specifically performed to investigate the influence of the mode of transport from the database of the French Intensive care Recorded in Severe Trauma study [3,4]. Compared with ground transport, HT patients were more intensively treated in the prehospital phase. The need for emergency surgical procedures and overall head surgical procedures until discharge from hospital were higher …

1043 Evaluation of Pediatric Testes After Surgery by Laser Doppler and White Light Spectroscopy

2012

Aim To evaluate testes after unilateral orchiopexy Laser Doppler and white light spectroscopy and compare microcirculation with contralaterat testis and healthy controls. Methods A combination of the laser Doppler (determination of blood flow) and white light spectroscopy (determination of oxygen saturation and hemoglobin amount) is used to determine microcirculation at two different depth levels non-invasively. Patients were recruited after unilateral orchiopexy. Controls were age-matched boys without relevant disease. Ethical approval was obtained. Results 99 patients were included after unilateral orchiopexy at the age of 3.5 years (+-2.9 years). 65% underwent surgery after their second …
