Full-Waveform Terrestrial Laser Scanning for Extracting a High-Resolution 3D Topographic Model: a Case Study on an Area of Archaeological Significance
2014
AbstractThis paper describes a method, which uses full-waveform terrestrial laser scanning to survey the surface of the slope below the Temple of Juno, located in the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento (Sicily, Southern Italy). The surface is characterized by the presence of large rock blocks, which have fallen down from the upper side; possible further detachments of rock blocks would cause a situation of general instability, with a very high risk to the archaeological structures in the near future. The methodology was designed to evaluate the potential of full-waveform laser scanning technology for the production of a very high resolution 3D topographic model of the slope, to be used as a…
Comparative Study of Different Methods for the Prediction of Drug–Polymer Solubility
2015
In this study, a comparison of different methods to predict drug-polymer solubility was carried out on binary systems consisting of five model drugs (paracetamol, chloramphenicol, celecoxib, indomethacin, and felodipine) and polyvinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymers (PVP/VA) of different monomer weight ratios. The drug-polymer solubility at 25 °C was predicted using the Flory-Huggins model, from data obtained at elevated temperature using thermal analysis methods based on the recrystallization of a supersaturated amorphous solid dispersion and two variations of the melting point depression method. These predictions were compared with the solubility in the low molecular weight liquid ana…
Castellaccio of Monreale: From the Survey to the Visualisation of Virtual Reconstructions
2023
On Monte Caputo near Monreale stands a castle, presumably built in the twelfth century. The paper presents the first results of a still in progress survey activity, carried out on the entire monument using laser scanning and photogram-metric methods. This activity was carried out as part of a scientific agreement stipu-lated between the University of Palermo, Department of Architecture and the Club Alpino Siciliano, owner of the Castle. The graphic restitution of the survey provided new information and unpublished images of the castle. It was then possible to formu-late hypotheses on the virtual reconstruction of lost configurations. This was achiev-able thanks to the survey analytical read…
Spatio-temporal Characteristics of THz Emission at the Subwavelength Scale via Optical Rectification
2011
Highly localized THz emission via optical rectification in thin nonlinear crystals is a promising method for subwavelength microscopy. We present here the peculiar THz spatio-temporal characteristics induced by the non-paraxial generation regime.
Properties of silicon integrated photonic lenses: bandwidth, chromatic aberration, and polarization dependence
2013
We analyze the properties of silicon integrated photonic lenses based on scattering optical elements. The devices have been inverse- designed by combining genetic algorithms and the multiple scattering theory. These lenses are able to focus an infrared plane wave front on a position freely determined during the design stage. The nanofabricated silicon integrated lenses have proved effective over a large range of wave- lengths, measured to be of the order of 100 nm. The lenses show chromatic aberration, with a displacement of the position of the focus mea- sured to be higher than 1.5 μm when the wavelength varies from 1500 to 1600 nm. Moreover, we analyze the polarization of the focused beam…
Optical field molding within near-field coupled twinned nanobeam cavities
2011
Twinned high Q nanobeam cavities can be optically coupled while being placed in the optical near-field of each other. They form then a new optical system which supports discrete field maps addressable by wavelength selection.
The impact of whey protein preheating on the properties of emulsion gel bead
2014
Thermal treatment effect (70 or 80 °C for 5 or 30 min) was evaluated on functional properties of whey protein isolate (WPI) dispersions used for the development of novel vitamin A delivery systems based on emulsion gel beads. This process combines an (O/W) emulsion diluted by a polysaccharide solution and a cold-set gelation induced by salt addition. Pre-heated WPI had a significant impact on the denaturation degree and on the surface hydrophobicity, respectively studied by differential scanning calorimetry and fluorescence. Stronger heating conditions (i.e. duration or temperature) induced complete denaturation, an increase of surface hydrophobicity and of viscosity. Under these conditions…
Liquid and vapour water transfer through whey protein/lipid emulsion films
2010
BACKGROUND: Edible films and coatings based on protein/lipid combinations are among the new products being developed in order to reduce the use of plastic packaging polymers for food applications. This study was conducted to determine the effect of rapeseed oil on selected physicochemical properties of cast whey protein films. RESULTS: Films were cast from heated (80 °C for 30 min) aqueous solutions of whey protein isolate (WPI, 100 g kg−1 of water) containing glycerol (50 g kg−1 of WPI) as a plasticiser and different levels of added rapeseed oil (0, 1, 2, 3 and 4% w/w of WPI). Measurements of film microstructure, laser light-scattering granulometry, differential scanning calorimetry, wetti…
A new tool for nanoscale X-ray absorption spectroscopy and element-specific SNOM microscopy.
2007
Abstract Investigations of complex nanostructured materials used in modern technologies require special experimental techniques able to provide information on the structure and electronic properties of materials with a spatial resolution down to the nanometer scale. We tried to address these needs through the combination of X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) using synchrotron radiation microbeams with scanning near-field optical microscopy (SNOM) detection of the X-ray excited optical luminescence (XEOL) signal. The first results obtained with the prototype instrumentation installed at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (Grenoble, France) are presented. They illustrate the possibi…
Preprocessing of region of interest localization based on local surface curvature analysis for three-dimensional reconstruction with multiresolution
2009
We present an approach to integrate a preprocessing step of the region of interest ROI localization into 3-D scanners laser or ste- reoscopic. The definite objective is to make the 3-D scanner intelligent enough to localize rapidly in the scene, during the preprocessing phase, the regions with high surface curvature, so that precise scanning will be done only in these regions instead of in the whole scene. In this way, the scanning time can be largely reduced, and the results contain only per- tinent data. To test its feasibility and efficiency, we simulated the prepro- cessing process under an active stereoscopic system composed of two cameras and a video projector. The ROI localization is…
