On the mechanics of progress in primary education
2003
03045; International audience; As countries grow rich, education improves in many ways. The sector enjoys more resources for education per primary school-aged child, not because of bigger budget allocations, nor an easing of the demographic burden on the system, but because the cost of inputs, especially teacher salaries, decline substantially relative to the per capita GNP. The extra resources enable countries to expand coverage and reduce the pupil–teacher ratio, with the latter receiving increasing emphasis during the past 20 years. The implicit trade-off against coverage raises questions about the efficiency and equity of education policies in developing countries, particularly in setti…
Grading Across Schools
2009
Abstract This paper reports some facts about grading standards across a varied sample of 16 countries participating in the 2003 OCSE-PISA Survey. Our main finding is that in all countries except Ireland and the USA there is conspicuous heterogeneity in standards across schools (Table 3, Figures 1 & 2). In most of the countries where heterogeneity is present a grading-on-a-curve practice emerges, with grading standards increasing with average competence of the school's students (Table 4, Figures 3 & 4). Where this phenomenon is more pronounced, it may be related to existence of a tracking (as opposed to comprehensive) school system (Table 5, Figure 5).
Jacob Viner and the Chicago monetary tradition
2009
The paper aims at assessing Jacob Viner's role in that brand of monetary thought which historians associate with the Chicago School and whose origins can be retraced in the writings and teaching of Frank Knight, Lloyd Mints, Henry Simons and Viner himself. After a brief description of the prolonged debate over the origins and nature of the so called “Chicago Monetary Tradition”, we examine Viner's analyses and policy proposals drawing particular attention to: his analysis of the Great depression; his proposals for monetary expansion and banking reform; his shift of emphasis in favour of Fiscal Policy; the evolution of its monetary framework in the early 1930's. Finally, we compare his posit…
La scuola come comunità educante nella pedagogia italiana del secondo Novecento
2021
The aim of this paper is to present a historical reconstruction of the Italian debate in the second half of the twentieth century about the community as the destiny of education and school institution. After the reflections of the immediate post-war period, when the notion of community is combined with the idea of a substantial democracy, there is the idea of a school as educating community suggested by the Faure Report in the seventies. The educational debate on the school as an educating community is very rich of different voices that interpret, during the second half of the twentieth century, a need that is not always satisfied, but that is the sign of a constant attention to the communi…

School-family relationship: a survey on the communicative and participatory methods of non-indigenous families
2022
