Investing in a PhD : Human capital or cultural capital ?

2005

The first part is mainly devoted to the study of the theoretical positions of Gary Becker and Pierre Bourdieu, the main theme being the vision of education as a capital. The notions of human capital (Becker) and cultural capital (Bourdieu) are presented, compared and criticised, each one being replaced in its theoretical context. The second part is devoted to empirical analyses concerning the PhD. We first try to assess the monetary return on a PhD. Then we look for the reasons why people pursue study at doctoral level, knowing that the monetary return can not by himself explain this decision. The PhD appears mainly as a way to work in higher education and public research. More than human c…

Childhood in a rom/gypsy camp in southern-Italy:an anthropological perspective.

2007

The object of the study is the Rom/gypsy/ camp in Palermo, Sicily, in the south of Italy, where three groups of so-called “gypsies” or "travellers” live together; they originally came from the Balkans and have been settled in this zone for twenty years. Out of a population of about 300 individuals, as many as 55 children go to 7 different schools. The study is carried out using the anthropological method of participant observation. The aim of the research, which is still going on, is to monitor the progress of their schooling and to study their parents’ roles; particular attention is given to the fundamental interplay of relationships and socioeducational intervention in the capable hands o…

Effect of boat noise on the behaviour of bluefin tuna Thunnus thynnus in the Mediterranean Sea

2007

The effect of boat noise on the behaviour of bluefin tuna Thunnus thynnus was investi- gated in the Egadi Islands, Sicily, during spring 2005 using a fixed tuna trap set near shipping routes. Tuna behaviour was observed when exposed to both natural ambient sound and sound generated by hydrofoil passenger ferries, small boats and large car ferries. Acoustical and behavioural analyses were conducted with and without extraneous sound to define a list of behavioural categories. Each vessel produced different engine sounds with regard to their composition and bandwidth, and all were distinctly different from ambient sound levels. In the absence of boat noise, tuna assumed a con- centrated coordi…

The children's instruction in Sub-Saharan Africa

2011

This article deals with the various schooling of three francophone African countries. This article presents the resultants of three field surveys, during which ethnographic and participant observations, but also over 150 in depth interviews were led. After having described the educational provision in the three countries concerned, the article shed some light on the representations of school for parents of pupils. A specific focus is made on the schooling model corresponding to each school. That's how was measured the leeway of parents face to the schooling choice which is imposed, face to a plural educational provision which herald historic connations and hierarchical organisation.

Access to Secondary Education in Albania: Incentives, Obstacles, and Policy Spillovers

2006

When judged either by educational attainment of adult population or by secondary and tertiary enrollment rates, by 2002 Albania compared very unfavorably to most European countries, including its neighbors. This study examines the determinants of secondary enrollment applying unobserved family effect probit model to data from Living Standards Measurement Survey 2002- 2003. The focus of the paper is to investigate the importance of access to school and to further education for enrollment. We find that both absence of a secondary school in the community and the distance from the residence location to a secondary school have strong negative effect on enrollment, controlling for family backgrou…

Individual habitat transitions of Atlantic herring Clupea harengus in a human-modified coastal system

2015

Published version of an article from the journal: Marine Ecology Progress Series. Also available from Inter Research. Http://dx.doi.org/10.3354/meps11103 Pelagic marine fish often display highly dynamic migration patterns. However, such movement behaviour is usually studied at the population or school level, while less is known about individual movement characteristics and habitat transitions. During March 2012 to June 2013, we used acoustic tags and moored receivers to monitor the behaviour of Atlantic herring Clupea harengus L. (N = 47) throughout a range of habitats on the Skagerrak coast in southern Norway. Five of the tagged herring entered a former lake transformed into an artificial …

Schooling Effects and Earnings of French UniversityGraduates : School Quality Matters, but Choice ofDisciplines Matters More

2009

09022 - Actes sur CD-ROM; Our aim in this article is to study the relation between earnings of French universities graduates and some characteristics of their universities. We exploit data from the Céreq's "Génération 98" survey, enriched with information on university characteristics primarily from the ANETES (yearbook of French institutions of higher education). We employ multilevel modeling, enabling us to take advantage of the natural hierarchy in our separate datasets, and thus to identify, and even to measure potential effcts of institutional quality. Since we take into account many individual students characteristics, we are able to obtain an income hierarchy among the diffrent disci…

Shoaling behaviour of fish under parasitism and predation risk

2008

Shoaling is a common antipredatory adaptation in several fish species. However, parasite infections may alter shoaling behaviour of fish by impairing fish sensory/motor systems and by reducing the net benefit of shoaling. In an experimental study, we investigated whether Diplostomum spathaceum (Trematoda) eye flukes alter shoaling behaviour of rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, and if this has an interaction with predation risk. The parasite reduces the vision of fish by inducing cataract formation, which in previous studies has been shown to alter fish escape responses and crypsis. We found that the shoals of infected fish contained fewer individuals and they divided into separate groups …

Finnish Quality Evaluation Discourse : Swimming Against the Global Tide?

2023

AbstractThis chapter discusses Finnish quality evaluation in comprehensive education, recognising that it frequently differs from that used by the Global Education Reform Movement (GERM) in most countries. Instead of high-stakes testing of pupil achievement, monitoring or school inspection, Finnish quality evaluation (QE) rests mainly on sample-based national testing and self-evaluations conducted in schools and municipalities. The argument presented here is that, although reform of the Finnish education system has often taken a different path from other countries, at the level of discourse, the Finnish system is increasingly caught between the more usual approach to QE and the Finnish vari…
