Big Data Processing in the ATLAS Experiment: Use Cases and Experience

Abstract The physics goals of the next Large Hadron Collider run include high precision tests of the Standard Model and searches for new physics. These goals require detailed comparison of data with computational models simulating the expected data behavior. To highlight the role which modeling and simulation plays in future scientific discovery, we report on use cases and experience with a unified system built to process both real and simulated data of growing volume and variety.

Verranno presentate alcune considerazioni sul ruolo che gli Enti di ricerca dovrebbero (e potrebbero) svolgere nel complesso sistema dell’alta formazione e di quello che ad essa è connesso (dallo sviluppo produttivo al vivere civile). La motivazione di fondo, poi, delle considerazioni che seguono è che la ricerca scientifica può svolgere un ruolo cruciale in tutti questi aspetti in quanto essa è connessa in modo essenziale all’uso di un metodo critico che fa discendere le conclusioni cui essa arriva dalle argomentazioni addotte e non dall’autorità di qualcuno.

AbstractThis overview describes the principles of the 4th edition of the European Code against Cancer and provides an introduction to the 12 recommendations to reduce cancer risk. Among the 504.6 million inhabitants of the member states of the European Union (EU28), there are annually 2.64 million new cancer cases and 1.28 million deaths from cancer. Classroom Management and Loss of Time at the Lesson Start: A Preliminary Study

<p style="text-align:justify">Lesson starts are transitional events which may cause management problems for teachers. In this study 131 lesson starts of equally many teachers were observed in primary and secondary schools in Finland. The results indicated that, in general, the problems were minimal. However, for various reasons lesson starts were delayed by an average of about six minutes. Calculated on this basis, the total loss of instructional time in the whole school year was about five weeks of schooling. The broad-scale emergence of AI in industry calls forth basic questions in terms of the knowledge bases and approaches relevant for its design. Engineering design has been mainly developed for electromechanical artifacts.
