By examining current Cuban texts, this study analyzes a type of constructions which are proposed to be denominated 'emphatic sequences of identification with como'. It tries to explain these sequences as a peculiar linguistic construction by means of the description and interpretation of their morphosyntactic and semantic characteristics.
On the History of Differentiable Manifolds
2012
International audience; We discuss central aspects of history of the concept of an affine dif-ferentiable manifold, as a proposal confirming the need for using some quantitative methods (drawn from elementary Model Theory) in Mathematical Historiography. In particular, we prove that this geometric structure is a syntactic rigid designator in the sense of Kripke-Putnam.
Pragmatic and Informative “Wholes”: the Evolutionary Roots of the Human Language
2011
The study of the origins of language has been the interest of several ungrounded debates which have often affected its scientific plausibility. In this paper, aiming at an internally consistent interdisciplinary approach, I will adopt Botha´s “Windows Approach" (2006) in order to justify the following two assumptions concerning the evolutionary roots of human language: a) despite the uniqueness of human language in sharing and conveying utterances with an open-ended structure, some isolated components of our linguistic competence are somehow shared with non-human primates, grounding a line of evolutionary continuity; b) the evolutionary thesis which sustains that the very first “linguistic”…
On flora semantics in house names found in Vidzeme: materials contained in the 1826 counting of souls in Vidzeme province
2014
On flora semantics in house names found in Vidzeme: materials contained in the 1826 counting of souls in Vidzeme province The information of the counting of souls containing both house names and names of individuals is an essential aspect of historical onomastics. The first counting of souls in Vidzeme took place in 1782 and coincided with the 4 th analogous census of the provinces of Russia. Subsequently these took place at irregular intervals, the 5 th in 1795, the 6 th in 1811, the 7 th in 1816, the 8 th in 1834, the 9 th in 1850, and the final, 10 th in 1858. The number of house names entered in the 1826 counting of souls in Vidzeme province (guberna) is 14,500, including those of peasa…
Diachrony and Neology: Semantic Change, Subjectivization and the Representation of Thinking. The Meaning of the Catalan Verb Esmar, from ‘Setting the…
2015
The study of neology is inextricably linked with the study of language change and, therefore, with diachrony. The aim of this paper is to describe the semant…
Defectivitat morfològica i variació sintàctica
2021
This paper discusses a case of parametric variation between Catalan and Spanish that concerns the fronting possibilities within the CP domain (the so-called ÇLeft PeripheryÈ). In particular, attention is paid to Catalan’s weak left peripheral activity, which prevents it from generating sentences that involve a Çmild focalizationÈ pattern very common in Spanish (e.g., «Mucha tontería dice el Gobierno» vs. *«Molta ximpleria diuel Govern»), first noted by Torrego (1980) and further explored by Uriagereka (1988). Interestingly, the same behavior is observed in the v*P domain, which accounts for the fact that VSO sentences (generated through movement of the subject to a specifier position, as Or…
Semantics of Voids within Data: Ignorance-Aware Machine Learning
2021
Operating with ignorance is an important concern of geographical information science when the objective is to discover knowledge from the imperfect spatial data. Data mining (driven by knowledge discovery tools) is about processing available (observed, known, and understood) samples of data aiming to build a model (e.g., a classifier) to handle data samples that are not yet observed, known, or understood. These tools traditionally take semantically labeled samples of the available data (known facts) as an input for learning. We want to challenge the indispensability of this approach, and we suggest considering the things the other way around. What if the task would be as follows: how to buil…
Laika apzīmējumi Homēra Odisejas valodā
2018
Linear Types for Higher Order Processes with First Class Directed Channels
1995
Abstract We present a small programming language for distributed systems based on message passing processes. In contrast to similar languages, channels are one-to-one connections between a unique sender and a unique receiver process. Process definitions and channels are first class values and the topology of process systems can change dynamically. The operational semantics of the language is defined by means of graph rewriting rules. A static type system based on the notion of linear types ensures that channels are always used as one-to-one connections.
Naming sensory impressions in winespeak between professionals and non-professionals
2014
International audience; Connections between semantics — for instance, cognitive semantic models such as prototype theory — and sensory analysis have often been studied from an interdisciplinary perspective involving disciplines such as linguistics, cognitive psychology, and chemistry. Among the many fields concerned with this topic, this paper will focus on the particular case of winespeak and especially on the co-construction of a shared knowledge between professionals and consumers. The hypothesis to be verified is (i) that objectivist and strict terminological approaches can not account for the processes at work when professionals and non professionals try to agree on the ‘specialized me…
