Priority-oriented multicast transmission schemes for heterogeneous traffic in WSNs

To ensure quality of service (QoS) for heterogeneous traffic in IEEE 802.15.4 based wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is a challenging task since no traffic prioritization mechanism is defined in such WSNs. In this paper, we propose two priority-oriented multicast transmission schemes to provide QoS for heterogeneous traffic in WSNs. Contrary to the legacy CSMA/CA and FIFO principles, these schemes differentiate self-generated or received traffic and give priority to delay-sensitive traffic with respect to channel access and packet scheduling. A device for multimodal imaging of skin

A compact prototype device for diagnostic imaging of skin has been developed and tested. Polarized LED light at several spectral regions is used for illumination, and round skin spot of diameter 30mm is imaged by a CMOS sensor via crossoriented polarizing filter. Comparison of different predictive models for nutrient estimation in a sequencing batch reactor for wastewater treatment

Abstract In this paper different predictive models for nutrient estimation in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) for wastewater treatment are compared: principal component regression (PCR), partial least squares (PLS), and artificial neural networks (ANNs). Two unfolding procedures were used: batch-wise and variable-wise. For the latter unfolding method, X and Y matrix augmentation with lagged variables were used in some models to incorporate process dynamics. The results have shown that batch-wise unfolding PLS models outperform the other approaches. Risk Factors for Sensorineural Hearing Loss and Auditory Maturation in Children Admitted to Neonatal Intensive Care Units: Who Recovered?

Background: Newborns admitted to neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) are at higher risk of developing sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL), which may improve over time. The aim of this study was to describe the prevalence of the main risk factors for SNHL in a NICU cohort, focusing on children who underwent auditory maturation. Methods: An observational study of 378 children admitted to NICUs, who were followed for at least 18 months, with periodic audiologic assessments. Results: Out of 378 patients, 338 had normal hearing and 40 were hearing-impaired; we found a higher percentage of extremely preterm (EPT) and extremely low-birthweight (ELBW) infants in SNHL children (p < 0.05). A 3.3 V Output Voltage Optical Plasmonic Solar Energy Harvester

In this paper, for the first time, the design of a solar energy-harvester (EH) based on plasmonic optical nanorectennas and without the step-up converter is presented.
