Integration and application of emerging RF systems formed by wireless sensor networks: exhaustive experiment to their implantation in different envir…

2007

This paper shows the possibility to use Bluetooth for wireless short range communication in an industrial environment. Traditionally many types of devices have been delivered as mechanical devices and more or less all or the intelligence and control has been added. Nowadays there is a growing trend towards a higher level of built-in intelligence in the devices, constituting the intelligent nodes. This type of systems allows the implementation of highly flexible control systems capable of adapting themselves to different situations. With the introduction of RF systems, another dimension is aggregated, the possibility to wirelessly connect to the devices. The technology makes it possible to e…

Low-Cost Alternatives for Urban Noise Nuisance Monitoring Using Wireless Sensor Networks

2015

Noise pollution caused by vehicular traffic is a common problem in urban environments that has been shown to affect people's health and children's cognition. In the last decade, several studies have been conducted to assess this noise, by measuring the equivalent noise pressure level (called L eq ) to acquire an accurate sound map using wireless networks with acoustic sensors. However, even with similar values of L eq , people can feel the noise differently according to its frequency characteristics. Thus, indexes, which can express people's feelings by subjective measures, are required. In this paper, we analyze the suitability of using the psychoacoustic metrics given by the Zwicker's mod…

Decentralized Synchronization for Zigbee wireless sensor networks in Multi-Hop Topology

2010

Abstract The most effective solution for energy saving in low-rate wireless sensor networks is maintaining each node in a doze state as long as possible. In order to guarantee network connectivity, the intervals at which the network sensors are turned on and off have to be coordinated. We analyze the Zigbee MAC performance in sensor networks deployed in multi-hop topologies. For this networks, critical inefficiencies can arise due to transmissions performed by hidden nodes. We evaluate the impact of different synchronization schemes on the network performance, both in terms of network capacity and in terms of energy consumption. We show how the synchronization function can be opportunistica…

Protecting emergency workers and armed forces from volatile toxic compounds: Applicability of reversible conductive polymer-based sensors in barrier …

2019

International audience; Barrier materials have wide applicability in both professional (military, medical, industrial) and non-professional(leisure and sports) fields. This paper focuses on the preparation of real conductive polymer (CP) sensors, for thestudy of the permeation of volatile toxic compounds through barrier materials. Use of such a CP sensor can helpimprove the quality of barrier materials used in protective clothing. Several types of platforms have beenmanufactured or purchased for use as comb sensors with different electrode dimensions, and a suitable methodof applying the detection layer of conductive polymers (polyaniline and poly-pyrrole) has been developed. Prepared senso…

A Prototype of Wireless Sensor for Data Acquisition in Energy Management Systems

2018

A prototype of a wireless sensor for monitoring electrical loads in a smart building is designed and implemented. The sensor can acquire the main electrical parameters of the connected load and, optionally, other physical quantities (e.g., room temperature). Unlike other wireless sensors in literature, the proposed sensor is cheap and small, exploits the Wi-Fi network that is commonly available inside buildings, and uses a lightweight message-based communication paradigm. Besides the sensor node, two management nodes are also implemented to manage sensor reconfiguration and the persistence of data. The measured data are stored in an SQLite database and can be used for various purposes, e.g.…

Assistive robotic walker parameter identification for estimation of human thrust without force sensors

2017

In this paper we propose a parameter identification procedure for the wheel-motor dynamic of a robotic walker, i.e. a commercial trolley for elderly people endowed with cognitive, sensing and guidance capabilities. The objective of the wheel-motor dynamic model is to generate a suitable time reference to be used in an estimation algorithm. The ultimate goal of the estimation algorithm is to retrieve the thrust, i.e. torque and force, that the older adult user of the robotic walker applies to the platform. These quantities are of paramount importance in order to adopt intelligent and comfortable walker guidance algorithms. The novelty of this approach is the avoidance of additional costly se…

Opals infiltrated with a stimuli-responsive hydrogel for ethanol vapor sensing

2013

We report on a novel class of optical materials for ethanol vapor sensing, based on polystyrene opals infiltrated with an innovative stimuli responsive hydrogel. We describe the fabrication process of the bare polystyrene opals and their subsequent infiltration. The optical characterization of the photonic crystal templates was performed to prove the good quality of the samples. Measurements on the infiltrated opals showed that the transmission spectra in the visible range strongly change at varying concentrations of ethanol vapor. The fabricated structures show a linear optical response in the visible range, for high values of ethanol concentration.

Two Levels SPF-Based System to Interconnect Partially Decentralized P2P File Sharing Networks

2005

Partially decentralized P2P (PDP2P) networks are a subset of P2P networks. Roles of nodes are different according to their functionality in the network. Nowadays, there are many PDP2P networks, with different characteristics. It is necessary to find a way to join those autonomous networks. We have not found any interconnection system, so in this article we present a new hierarchical system for interconnecting peers from different PDP2P networks. It will allow sharing data, content and resources between networks. It can be employed between sensor networks, P2P networks, and generally, overlay networks. Oldest superpeers or brokers with higher bandwidth in the PDP2P network will belong to hig…

Gold nanoparticles/electrochemically expanded graphite composite: A bifunctional platform toward glucose sensing and SERS applications

2019

Abstract An integrated nanogold/expanded graphite based sensor was fabricated by a former electrochemical etching of the pencil lead electrode (PLE) and a later in-situ deposition of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). The electrochemical pretreatment of PLE (EPLE) created a 3D graphene-like surface, enhanced the electrode surface area and facilitated the electron transfer ability within 5 min without any hazardous chemicals added. The obtained AuNPs/EPLE sensor had an excellent electrochemical response to glucose with a wide linear concentration range, from 0.05 to 38 mM and 38 to 60 mM, and a low detection limit of 5 μM (S/N = 3). Furthermore, the AuNPs/EPLE sensor was successfully employed to de…
