Influence of the simultaneous calibration of multiple ring dosimeters on the individual absorbed dose

2021

Abstract Ring dosimeters for personal dosimetry are calibrated in accredited laboratories following ISO 4037-3 guidelines. The simultaneous irradiation of multiple dosimeters would save time, but has to be carefully studied, since the scattering conditions could change and influence the absorbed dose in nearby dosimeters. Monte Carlo simulations using PENELOPE-2014 were performed to explore the need to increase the uncertainty of H p 0 .07 in the simultaneous irradiation of three and five DXT-RAD 707H-2 (Thermo Scientific) ring dosimeters with beam qualities: N-30, N-80 and N-300. Results show that the absorbed dose in each dosimeter is compatible with each of the others and with the refere…

Solid state bonding in extrusion and FSW: process mechanics and analogies

2006

Abstract The solid state bonding occurring in extrusion and in friction stir welding (FSW) processes is investigated through FEM models previously developed and validated. In particular, for the AA6082-T6 aluminum alloys, the most relevant field variables have been monitored and compared, such as strain, strain rate, effective stress and pressure. The aim of the research is the development of an effective FSW bonding criterion.

A Meshless Approach for Electromagnetic Simulation of Metallic Carbon Nanotubes

2009

In this paper, a study on the electromagnetic behaviour of a single wall carbon nanotube model is described. The electrons available for conduction are treated as a thin cylindrical layer fluid and their motion is described by means of classical hydrodynamics equations in linearized form. These equations are solved in time domain using the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics method. The method suitably handled runs on GRID environment.

Numerical Simulation as a Tool for Design Optimization of Two-Phase Swirl Flow Atomizers

2021

This study aims to analyze the hydrodynamics in two-phase swirl flow conical atomizers. The Euler-Euler model was used for the calculations. Numerical simulations were performed to provide information about the fluid velocity distribution and the atomizer’s internal flow. The numerical calculations confirmed the experimental data. This data was found based on the consistency of the spray angles obtained by both methods. Assuming the correctness of the numerical simulations performed, they can be treated as a tool for further analysis of mass and energy exchange along with the atomizer and optimizing the atomizer’s design depending on the requirements. The influence of the swirl chamber geom…

A two steps Lagrangian–Eulerian numerical model for the simulation of explosive welding of three dissimilar materials joints

2021

Abstract Explosion welding (EXW) is a solid-state joining process used to produce lap joints out of metal plates of dissimilar materials. During the process, a controlled explosive detonation results in a pressure wave pushing one of the plates to be welded, called flyer, against the other with high velocity. The high pressure and temperature generated, because of the impact energy decaying into heat, create the conditions for solid bonding phenomenon to take place. Due to the complexity of experimental tests, numerical simulation is considered a fundamental design tool for the process. Different approaches are found in literature to simulate the process. In this paper, a dual step Lagrangi…

Local Reinforcement Effect of a Strain Gauge Installation on Low Modulus Materials

2005

The reinforcement effect of electrical resistance strain gauges is well documented in the technical literature. In this paper the local reinforcement effect in tension is studied by using a simple theoretical model by considering a strain gauge mounted on a semi-infinite plate having the same width of the strain gauge and subjected to a uniaxial tension load. Neglecting the effect of the adhesive layer and considering the interface shear stress as an exponential distribution, the proposed model gives a closed-form solution. In detail, this model permits a simple formula to be obtained which allows the user to correct the local reinforcement effect provided that a proper calibration is perfo…

Pre-Stressed Sub-Surface Contribution on Bulk Diffusion in Metallic Solids

2011

Our recent modelling works and corresponding numerical simulations realized to describe the UO2 oxidation processes confirm the theory showing that an applied mechanical strain can strongly affect the local oxygen diffusion in a stressed solid. This result allows us to assume that stress field, previously applied at the surface of a metallic sample on several microns, will delay the degradation during its oxidation. Considering this hypothesis, we implemented a FEM simulation code developed in our laboratory to numerically investigate some different stress fields applied on a sample sub-surface, that might significantly modify the volume diffusion of oxygen during the oxidation process. The…

A phase-field model for strain localization analysis in softening elastoplastic materials

2019

Abstract The present paper deals with the localization of strains in those structures consisting of materials exhibiting plastic softening response. It is assumed that strain localization develops in a finite thickness band separated from the remaining part of the structure by weak discontinuity surfaces. In view of the small thickness of the band with respect to the dimensions of the structure, the interphase concept is used for the mechanical modeling of the localization phenomenon. We propose a formulation for the quasi-static modeling of strain localization based on a phase-field approach. In this sense, the localization band is smeared over the volume of the structure and a smooth tran…

Forming of aluminum foam sandwich panels: Numerical simulations and experimental tests

2006

Abstract The forming of the completed aluminium foam sandwich (AFS) panels would determine an improvement in the manufacturing of parts and panels. In this paper the authors have investigated the formability of AFS through experiments and numerical simulations. As far as the former are concerned, commercially prepared panels have been considered and bending and stamping processes have been taken into account. In addition, FEM analyses have been developed, utilizing a porous material model following the evolution of the material density throughout the forming processes.

Infrared thermography-based evaluation of the elastic-plastic J-integral to correlate fatigue crack growth data of a stainless steel

2019

Abstract The elastic-plastic J-integral is adopted to correlate fatigue crack growth data of ductile metals. An analytical link is known to exist between the J-integral and the strain energy density averaged in a control volume embracing the crack tip. On the other hand, the strain energy fluctuation is the source of temperature variations close to a fatigue crack tip of a metal material; hence the possibility to measure the J-integral from infrared thermographic scanning at the crack tip is envisaged and it is the focus of this paper. It is proposed that the elastic component of the J-integral is derived from a thermoelastic stress analysis, while the plastic component of the J-integral is…
