Relative Vessel Motion Tracking using Sensor Fusion, Aruco Markers, and MRU Sensors

2017

This paper presents a novel approach for estimating the relative motion between two moving offshore vessels. The method is based on a sensor fusion algorithm including a vision system and two motion reference units (MRUs). The vision system makes use of the open-source computer vision library OpenCV and a cube with Aruco markers placed onto each of the cube sides. The Extended Quaternion Kalman Filter (EQKF) is used for bad pose rejection for the vision system. The presented sensor fusion algorithm is based on the Indirect Feedforward Kalman Filter for error estimation. The system is self-calibrating in the sense that the Aruco cube can be placed in an arbitrary location on the secondary ve…

A Study of the Simulated Evolution of the Spectral Sensitivity of Visual Agent Receptors

2001

In this article we study a model for the evolution of the spectral sensitivity of visual receptors for agents in a continuous virtual environment. The model uses a genetic algorithm (GA) to evolve the agent sensors along with the control of the agents by requiring the agents to solve certain tasks in the simulation environment. The properties of the evolved sensors are analyzed for different scenarios. In particular, it is shown that the GA is able to find a balance between sensor costs and agent performance in such a way that the spectral sensor sensitivity reflects the emission spectrum of the target objects and that the capability of the sensors to evolve can help the agents significantl…

Knowledge-Based Systems and F.E. Simulations in Metal-Forming Processes Design An integrated Approach

1991

Summary The automatic computer aided planning and design of cold forming processes includes several phases, among which the most important are the optimal choice of the forming operations sequence and, for each operation, the determination of the more suitable operating parameters. With this aim the Authors propose an integrated approach based on the preliminary choice of some feasible forming sequences, carried out by means of a knowledge-based system, and on the subsequent determination of the optimal one employing a finite element simulation of the process.

A single-domain Ritz approach for buckling and post-buckling analysis of cracked plates

2019

Abstract A Ritz approach for the analysis of buckling and post-buckling of plates with through-the-thickness cracks is presented. The plate behavior is described by the first order shear deformation theory and von Karman’s geometric nonlinearity. The admissible functions used in the displacements approximation are series of regular orthogonal polynomial supplemented with special functions able to decribe the dicontinuity across the crack and the singularity at the crack tips; boundary functions are used to fullfill the homogeneous essential boundary conditions. Convergence studies and analysis results are presented for buckling and post-buckling of plates with a central through-the-thicknes…

Probability Distribution of the Residence Times in Periodically Fluctuating Metastable Systems

1998

We investigate experimentally and numerically the probability distribution of the residence times in periodically fluctuating metastable systems. The experiments are performed in a physical metastable system which is the series of a biasing resistor with a tunnel diode in parallel to a capacitor. The numerical simulations are performed in an overdamped model system with a time-dependent potential. We investigate both the cases where the system is deterministically overall-stable and overall-unstable. In the overall-unstable regime, the experimental and the numerically investigated systems show noise enhanced stability in the presence of a finite amount of noise. The determined P(T) is mult…

A correction method for dynamic analysis of linear continuous systems

2005

A method to improve the dynamic response analysis of continuous classically damped linear system is proposed. As in fact usually, following a classical approach, a reduced number of eigenfunctions are accounted for and the response is evaluated by integrating the uncoupled differential equations of motion in modal space, neglecting the contribution of high frequency modes (truncation procedure). Here, starting from the given system, it is proposed to set up two differential equations governing the motion of two new continuous systems: the first one contains only the first m non-zero eigenvalues of the given system and the second one contains the remainder non-zero infinity - m eigenvalues. …

On estimating contemporaneous quarterly regional GDP

2007

Subnational regional jurisdictions rarely have at their disposal a reasonable array of timely statistics to monitor their economic condition. In light of this, we develop a procedure that simultaneously estimates a quarterly time series for all regions of a country based upon quarterly national and annual regional data. While other such techniques exist, we suggest a temporal error structure that eliminates possible spurious jumps. Using our approach, regional analysts should now be able to distribute national growth among regions as soon as quarterly national figures are released. In a Spanish application, we detail some practicalities of the process and show that our proposal produces bet…

Non-tidal loading of the Baltic Sea in Latvian GNSS time series

2021

Abstract The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of the Baltic Sea non-tidal loading in the territory of Latvia using observations of the GNSS continuously operating reference stations (CORS) of LatPos, EUPOS®-Riga, EPN and EstPos networks. The GNSS station daily coordinate time series obtained in a double-difference (DD) mode were used. For representation of the sea level dynamics, the Latvian tide gauge records were used. Performed correlation analysis is based on yearly data sets of these observations for the period from 2012 up to 2020. The approach discloses how the non-tidal loading can induce variations in the time series of the regional GNSS station network. This pa…

The Effects of the Use of Serious Game in Eco-Driving Training

2016

International audience; Serious games present a promising approach to training and learning. The player is engaged in a virtual environment for a purpose beyond pure entertainment, all while having fun. In this paper, we investigate the effects of the use of serious game in eco-driving training. An approach has been developed in order to improve players’ practical skills in terms of eco-driving. This approach is based on the development of a driving simulation based on a serious game, integrating a multisensorial guidance system with metaphors including visual messages (information on fuel consumption, ideal speed area, gearbox management, etc.) and sounds (spatialized sounds, voice message…

Vehicle routing with private and shared delivery locations

2021

Abstract The rapid growth of e-commerce has led to an increase of home delivery requests. Providing efficient distribution systems for services on the last mile has become a challenging issue for logistics companies, where a trade-off between the classical approaches, attended home delivery (AHD) and usage of shared delivery locations (SDLs) has been identified. AHD provides a higher quality of service but implies very high costs for the company, while usage of SDL requires customers to perform the very last mile by themselves. For companies, this bears the risk of a decrease in the perceived service quality. However, due to consolidation effects, transportation costs can be considerably mi…
