Control of Gastric Acid Secretion in Somatostatin Receptor 2 Deficient Mice: Shift from Endocrine/Paracrine to Neurocrine Pathways

2007

The gastrin-enterochromaffin-like (ECL) cell-parietal cell axis is known to play an important role in the regulation of gastric acid secretion. Somatostatin, acting on somatostatin receptor type 2 (SSTR2), interferes with this axis by suppressing the activity of the gastrin cells, ECL cells, and parietal cells. Surprisingly, however, freely fed SSTR2 knockout mice seem to display normal circulating gastrin concentration and unchanged acid output. In the present study, we compared the control of acid secretion in these mutant mice with that in wild-type mice. In SSTR2 knockout mice, the number of gastrin cells was unchanged; whereas the numbers of somatostatin cells were reduced in the antru…

RGB mapping of hemoglobin distribution in skin

2011

An experimental RGB imaging system based on commercial color camera was constructed, and its potential for mapping of hemoglobin distribution in skin was studied. Two types of LEDs (RGB and white “warm” LEDs) were compared as illuminators for acquiring images of vascular and pigmented skin malformations. A novel approach for studies of skin capillary refill by RGB analysis has been proposed and discussed.

Conventional Radiology in the Evaluation of the Small Bowel

2015

For many years, the small bowel has been considered as the “black box” of the gastrointestinal system because it could not be evaluated through endoscopy. For this reason, the conventional radiological methods, such as small bowel enteroclysis and small bowel follow-through, have been considered the standard approach for the evaluation of the small bowel in the diagnosis and management of Crohn’s disease for years. However, due to technological limits, the study of small bowel through conventional radiology has been focused mainly on its function than on its anatomy. To date, the conventional examination with the study of intestinal transit is now rarely used, if not obsolete, but it has st…

Inhibitory influences of vagal afferences on the oesophageal EMG peristaltic pattern

1987

AbstractThe influence of vagal afferents on the EMG peristaltic pattern was studied in pigeon oesophagus.Bilateral vagotomy did not abolish the primary peristalsis, but induced significant modifications of the peristaltic pattern parameters.Vagal afferent stimulation induced an inhibitory effect consisting of a temporary break or definitive block of the EMG peristaltic activity already in progress.Vagal afferent stimulation also induced a reduction of the spontaneous EMG activity and this effect was abolished either by glossopharyngeal bilateral section or ganglionic block.Likewise vagal afferent stimulation, the crop distension caused inhibitory effects on EMG peristaltic pattern. This eff…

Dolichomegaösophagus bei Achalasie

2004

HISTORY AND CLINICAL FINDINGS A 78-year-old woman suffered from achalasia since 63 years with a progressive decompensation over the last year. 53 years ago, treatment with the Stark Dilator and 24 years ago, pneumatic dilation had been carried out. Currently, the patient presented with dysphagia for liquid and solid food, with permanent retrosternal pain and regurgitation for every meal, leading to a weight loss of 10 kg. INVESTIGATIONS The barium esophagogram showed a marked dilation of the esophagus with retinated secretions and food. The cardia had a maximum width of 15 mm. On endoscopy, reflux esophagitis and an insufficient lower esophageal sphincter were evident. TREATMENT AND COURSE …

Effect of Soluble Interleukin-6 Receptor on Interleukin-6 Synthesis in Human Skin Fibroblasts

1996

Abstract In this study the ability of soluble interleukin-6 receptor (sIL-6R) to stimulate interleukin-6 (IL-6) synthesis in human fibroblasts is described. It was found that sIL-6R, in combination with endogenous or exogenous IL-6, markedly upregulated IL-6 synthesis. These data suggest that increased IL-6 production after stimulation by either interleukin-1 or tumor necrosis factor-α would result in complex formation with sIL-6R, rapid uptake, and further synthesis of this cytokine. Furthermore, it would explain the decrease in sIL-6R plasma levels observed in patients suffering from sepsis.

Anatomical basis for the interposition of a gastric pouch between the ileum and the anus after total proctocolectomy.

2003

After a total proctocolectomy, ileoanal continuity is achieved by an ileal pouch–anal anastomosis. This anastomosis is not possible when the ileum cannot reach the anus. To avoid definitive ileostomy in this circumstance, we devised a gastric pouch, taken from the left half of the vertical portion of the stomach, vascularized by the right gastroepiploic pedicle, then interposed it between the ileum and the anus. The aim of this anatomical study on seven cadavers was to estimate the capacity of this gastric pouch to reach the anus. The distance between the caudal edge of the pubic symphysis and the apex of the pouch was measured. It is accepted that an ileal pouch always reaches the anus wit…

A successful approach to conrol burning mouth syndrome using matricaria recutita and cognitive therapy

2018

The burning mouth syndrome (BMS) has no specific clinical and laboratory signs. Its etiology is yet to be elucidated, but it is considered to be affected by multifactorial, psychological, and local and systemic factors. This condition is considered of great morbidity, and the main complaint of patients maybe associated with xerostomia, thirst, and altered taste. The present study aims to report two cases of BMS and to evaluate the outcome of cognitive therapy (CT) plus phytotherapy in the control of BMS. The patients were female, Caucasian, and aged between 58 and 69 years. The most BMS-affected anatomical parts were the lips and the tongue. In the clinical approach, oral and systemic evalu…

The effectiveness of alkaline water on oily and acne-prone skin: a case report

2021

Background: Skin lesions and excess sebum on the surface of epidermis occur mainly among people suffering from acne vulgaris. Scientists are constantly searching for cosmetic procedures that, can not only complement dermatological treatment and decrease sebum production, but also increase patients’ quality of lives. Aim of the study: To evaluate the effectiveness of alkaline water in the treatment oily skin and acne vulgaris in a 21-year-old woman. Case report: A 21- year-old female reported problems with too high a sebum level and skin eruptions like blackheads, whiteheads, and pustules. The sebum level was measured and the global acne severity scale (GAGS) score was used to check the amou…

Individualized analysis of skin thermosensory thresholds and sensitivity in heat-sensitive people with multiple sclerosis

2020

We investigated whether and how multiple sclerosis (MS) alters thresholds for perceiving increases and decreases in local skin temperature, as well as the sensitivity to progressively greater temperature stimuli, amongst heat-sensitive people with MS. Eleven MS patients (5 M/6 F; 51.1 ± 8.6 y, EDSS 5.7 ± 1.9) and 11 healthy controls (CTR; 7 M/4 F; 50.3 ± 9.0 y) performed warm and cold threshold tests on a hairy skin site, on both sides of the body. They also underwent a thermosensitivity test where they rated (visual analogue scale) perceived magnitude of 4 local skin stimuli (i.e. 22, 26, 34, 38°C). Individual thresholds and slopes of linear regression for thermosensitivity were z-transfor…
