Monofloral honeys by Sicilian black honeybee (Apis mellifera ssp. sicula) have high reducing power and antioxidant capacity

Thirty samples from thirteen Sicilian monofloral honeys by the local black honeybee, and two honeydew honeys, were studied to assess phenol content, reducing power and antioxidant capacity as well as correlations among these parameters. Honeys from Apiaceae showed the highest phenol amount and capacity to reduce ferric ion and stable chemical radicals, whereas honeys from Leguminosae the lowest. All honeys were active against myoglobin-derived radicals usually formed in red meat after storage and/or heating and significant correlation (p = 0.023) was found between flavonoid content and deactivation rate of this radical. Hesperetin induces melanin production in adult human epidermal melanocytes

One of the major sources of flavonoids for humans are citrus fruits, hesperidin being the predominant flavonoid. Hesperetin (HSP), the aglycon of hesperidin, has been reported to provide health benefits such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anticarcinogenic effects. However, the effect of HSP on skin pigmentation is not clear. Abstract This study investigated the effect of hunger on consumers’ visual attention during a food choice task, and the role of time orientation (i.e., present and future orientation) in this interplay. A lab-based eye-tracking experiment including 102 participants was conducted, with hunger as the manipulated factor (hungry, satiated). Laser Doppler flowmetry in subepidermal tumours and in normal skin of rats during localized ultrasound hyperthermia.

Laser Doppler flowmetry has been applied to normal skin and to subepidermal tumours during localized ultrasound hyperthermia in the rat. In normal skin, 40 degrees C hyperthermia only induced a marginal increase in the red blood cell flux. Significant increases occurred after 20 min at 42 degrees C and after 4 min at 44 degrees C. During 44 degrees C hyperthermia maximum fluxes were reached after 24 min. Thereafter, the flow declined and finally approached preheating values. In contrast, in subepidermal tumours 40 degrees C hyperthermia on the average induced a slight decrease of the flux. Here, we hypothesized that mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) could trigger sensing of nutrients within the hypothalamus. For this purpose, we induced acute hypertriglyceridemia in rats and examined the function of mitochondria in the hypothalamus. Fluorescence labelling of organic acidic compounds with 4-bromomethyl-7-methoxycoumarin (Br-Mmc)

4-Bromomethyl-7-methoxycoumarin (Br-Mmc) is introduced as a fluorescence marker for aromatic and heterocyclic acids. To investigate the applicability of this method on substances of different chemical classes, screening experiments with 110 compounds were carried out using a microrefluxer. Most aromatic and heterocyclic monocarboxylic acids gave Mmc-esters which are fluorescent on thin-layer plates, like the Mmc-esters of fatty acids, which have been previously investigated. Abstract Four obligate heterofermentative lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains (Weissella cibaria PON10030 and PON10032 and Leuconostoc citreum PON 10079 and PON10080) were tested as single strain starters, mono-species dual strain starters, and multiple strain starter for the preparation and propagation of sourdoughs for the production of a typical bread at industrial level.
