On the Impact of Heat Pumps Electric Load on the Power Consumption of Lampedusa

2020

The present paper reports the results of a simulation study regarding the impact of the adoption of heat pumps for domestic hot water production in the island of Lampedusa (Italy). In the study, it has been assumed to replace electric storage water heaters with heat pumps at every dwelling of the about four thousand domestic end-users of the island and, in addition, to control the heat pump operation in order to enhance some parameters that characterize the quality of the generation and distribution system of the island (power peak, energy losses and voltage drop). According to the results of the simulations, while the replacement of electric storage water heaters with heat pumps is able to…

In q…

Novel Insights into the Cellular Localization and Regulation of the Autophagosomal Proteins LC3A, LC3B and LC3C

2020

Macroautophagy is a conserved degradative process for maintaining cellular homeostasis and plays a key role in aging and various human disorders. The microtubule-associated protein 1A/1B light chain 3B (MAP1LC3B or LC3B) is commonly analyzed as a key marker for autophagosomes and as a proxy for autophagic flux. Three paralogues of the LC3 gene exist in humans: LC3A, LC3B and LC3C. The molecular function, regulation and cellular localization of LC3A and LC3C have not been investigated frequently, even if a similar function to that described for LC3B appears likely. Here, we have selectively decapacitated LC3B by three separate strategies in primary human fibroblasts and analyzed the evoked e…

Conformational dynamics of full-length inducible human Hsp70 derived from microsecond molecular dynamics simulations in explicit solvent

2013

Human 70 kDa heat shock protein (hHsp70) is an ATP-dependent chaperone and is currently an important target for developing new drugs in cancer therapy. Knowledge of the conformations of hHsp70 is central to understand the interactions between its nucleotide-binding domain (NBD) and substrate-binding domain (SBD) and is a prerequisite to design inhibitors. The conformations of ADP-bound (or nucleotide-free) hHsp70 and ATP-bound hHsp70 was investigated by using unbiased all-atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of homology models of hHsp70 in explicit solvent on a timescale of .5 and 2.7 μs, respectively. The conformational heterogeneity of hHsp70 was analyzed by computing effective free-e…

Inactivation of a small heat shock protein affects cell morphology and membrane fluidity in Lactobacillus plantarum WCFS1.

2011

A small heat shock gene of Lactobacillus plantarum strain WCFS1 was deleted using a Cre-lox based system. Compared to the wild type, the ∆hsp 18.55 mutant strain displayed a similar growth rate when cultivated either under optimal temperature or under different stress conditions such as heat, low pH and salt stress. However, a longer lag phase was observed when the ∆hsp 18.55 mutant strain was cultivated under short intense heat stress (50 °C). This suggests that the hsp 18.55 gene of L. plantarum may be involved in recovery of L. plantarum stressed cells in the early stage of high temperature stress. In addition, morphology of the mutant cells, investigated by scanning electron microscopy,…

The clinical significance of small, dense low-density lipoproteins

2006

Peak size of low-density lipoproteins (LDL) in humans does not show a normal, but a bimodal distribution and can be separated into two phenotypes, that differ in size, density, physicochemical composition, metabolic behavior, and atherogenicity. These phenotypes have been assigned as pattern A when larger, more buoyant LDL and pattern B when smaller, more dense LDL predominate. Small dense LDL correlates negatively with plasma HDL levels and positively with plasma triglyceride concentrations and is associated with the metabolic syndrome and increased risk for cardiovascular disease. LDL size seems to be an important predictor of cardiovascular events and progression of coronary heart diseas…

Natural bioactive molecules induce a reduction of surface alpha-enolase in breast cancer cells

Cell surface expression of alpha-enolase, a glycolytic enzyme displaying moonlighting activities, has been shown to contribute to cancer cell invasion and metastasis formation. Although the functional role of surface alpha-enolase in cancer spreading has been clearly linked to the protein non-enzymatic function of binding plasminogen and enhancing plasmin formation, the cellular pathways underlying cell surface transport remain largely elusive. We have previously demonstrated that pro-invasive stimuli promote the surface expression of alpha-enolase in breast cancer cells. To further investigate alpha-enolase translocation to the plasma membrane and to identify the signaling involved in this…

Some Features of Modeling Ultrasound Propagation in Non-Destructive Control of Metal Structures Based on the Magnetostrictive Effect

2023

A method and mathematical models of direct and inverse problems of ultrasonic testing and diagnostics of complex metal structures for defects were developed and tested. A prototype of a system for magnetostrictive control of elements of the objects under study was manufactured and experimentally tested. Mathematical simulation of ultrasonic testing processes using MATLAB and the COMSOL Multiphysics software environment was carried out. The adequacy of the mathematical models was verified by the results of their comparison with real physical experiments. Information support and a methodology that implements it was developed, which ensure the functioning of the control facilities for these ob…
