Adam Smith and The Law

2013

The law is one of the main subjects in Adam Smith’s studies. He deals with it in the Lectures of Jurisprudence (LJ) and in the Wealth of the Nations (WN) and his ethical and philosophical premises are exposed in the Theory of Moral Sentiments (TMS). This interest in law is consistent with enlightenment culture which aspired to elaborate a great Science of Legislation in order to have enough knowledge to reform society and replace the Ancien Régime institutions with new ones able to support the course of progress and improve the life of the people. Yet, Smithian thought, while sharing the cultural aim of his age, is divergent from Juridical Enlightenment in many ways. I explain this divergen…

2023

Paolo Balsamo -economist and professor of University of Palermo from 1787 to 1812- was a traveller and expert in the most advanced and modern British and European agriculture. Paolo Balsamo, Smithianism and the Birth of Liberalism in Sicily

2020

The article focuses on the transition process of Sicily, between the end of 18th century and the beginning of 19th, from the Ancien Regime to a modern society, underlining the intellectual and political role of the Sicilian economist Paolo Balsamo. The professor of Agriculture and Economics at University of Palermo founded the Sicilian liberalism on Adam Smith’s works and tried to reform the institutions of the island aiming to make them the model of a Smithian nation. The article analyses Balsamo’s work by highlighting the interlacement of culture, social interests and political emergencies, all of which had an effect on how Smithianism was adopted in Sicily.

Assessing the quality of studies in meta-research: Review/guidelines on the most important quality assessment tools

2020

Systematic reviews and meta-analyses pool data from individual studies to generate a higher level of evidence to be evaluated by guidelines. These reviews ultimately guide clinicians and stakeholders in health-related decisions. However, the informativeness and quality of evidence synthesis inherently depend on the quality of what has been pooled into meta-research projects. Moreover, beyond the quality of included individual studies, only a methodologically correct process, in relation to systematic reviews and meta-analyses themselves, can produce a reliable and valid evidence synthesis. Hence, quality of meta-research projects also affects evidence synthesis reliability. In this overview…

Zadie Smith's autonomous writing commitments to E.M. Forster

2010

Though Zadie Smith has published only three novels so far, her fiction seems to follow some astonishing path from standard social commitment to the world to a more aesthetic and ideological commitment to Forster's Edwardian Howards End. In White Teeth Smith writes the story of today's multicultural London in a committed way, though soon enough her particular view of the past and its aftermath signals some tension between literature and history. The logic of chance and randomness provides a first hint of the autonomy of fiction for Smith: fiction allows the past and history “to have happened”. On Beauty may forget the world in the same ambiguous way as Howards End did, eventually more poetic…
