An attribute based access control scheme for secure sharing of electronic health records
2016
Electronic health records (EHRs) play a vital role in modern health industry, allowing the possibility of flexible sharing of health information in the quest of provisioning advanced and efficient healthcare services for the users. Although sharing of EHRs has significant benefits, given that such records contain lot of sensitive information, secure sharing of EHRs is of paramount importance. Thus, there is a need for the realization of sophisticated access control mechanisms for secure sharing of EHRs, which has attracted significant interest from the research community. The most prominent access control schemes for sharing of EHRs found in literature are role based and such solutions have…
Approximation-based adaptive tracking control of stochastic nonlinear systems with a general form
2014
In this paper, an approximation-based adaptive tracking control scheme is proposed for a class of stochastic nonlinear systems with a more general structure. Fuzzy logical systems are used to approximate unknown nonlinearities in the controller design procedure and the backstepping technique is utilized to construct a state-feedback adaptive controller. The proposed controller can guarantee that all the signals in the closed-loop system are fourth-moment semi-globally uniformly ultimately bounded and the tracking error eventually converges to a small neighborhood around the origin. Simulation results are used to show the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme.
Multi-cloud privacy preserving schemes for linear data mining
2015
This paper presents an approach to privacy-preserving data mining that relies upon a relatively simple secret sharing scheme. Its main feature is that users, sensitive data owners, are engaged in the secret sharing operations that protect their privacy. They are grouped in independent clouds connected to a central unit, the data miner, that only manages the aggregated data of each cloud, therefore avoiding the disclosure of information belonging to single nodes. We propose two privacy preserving schemes, with different privacy levels and communication costs. When designing them, we assume that some users' data might become inaccessible during the operation of the privacy preserving protocol…
An interdisciplinary school project using a Nintendo Wii controller for measuring car speed
2013
This is an author-created, un-copyedited version of an article published in Physics Review. IOP Publishing Ltd is not responsible for any errors or omissions in this version of the manuscript or any version derived from it. The Version of Record is available online at http://dx.doi.org/10.1088/0031-9120/48/2/184 This work examines the feasibility of employing a Nintendo Wii game controller for measuring car speed in an interdisciplinary school project. It discusses the physical characteristics of the controller and of vehicle headlights. It suggests how an experiment may be linked to topics in mathematics, statistics, physics and computer science. An algorithm for calculating speed from rep…
Data Analysis as a Tool for Optimizing Learning Management Systems
2009
The advent of the Internet has opened a scope for research in new methods and tools that may facilitate the teaching and learning processes. This has, in turn, led to the development of learning platforms to support teaching and learning activities. The market penetration of these has been such that nowadays most universities provide their academic community with some form of a learning management system (LMS).Although a lot of effort has been put into deploying these platforms, the usage statistics that they generally provide are not generally processed to optimize their use within a specific context or institution (or confronted with quality or innovation indexes to produce useful feedbac…
Distributed Scrum when Turning into Maintenance : A Single Case Study
2015
Global software development using agile methods is commonplace in software industry nowadays. Scrum, as the agile development management framework, can be distributed in many ways, especially concerning how the key roles are presented in different sites. We describe here a single case study of a distributed Scrum, mainly for maintenance of the already constructed web portal. Using a qualitative method, both working well and challenging parts of the software work, as experienced by the project stakeholders, are revealed and discussed.
Improvement of a low-cost buoy for the measurement of the sea wave weather
2021
This article presents the result of an experimental meteorological buoy designed by the Department of Engineering of the University of Palermo, characterized by low costs and great versatility, and equipped with industrially certified measuring and detection instruments. This buoy can measure the parameters of the water column and continuously transmit the data to a remote acquisition centre. Maintenance requirements are very limited.
Polymer‐Based Composites for Engineering Organic Memristive Devices
2022
Memristive materials are related to neuromorphic applications as they can combine information processing with memory storage in a single computational element, just as biological neurons. Many of these bioinspired materials emulate the characteristics of memory and learning processes that happen in the brain. In this work, we report the memristive properties of a two-terminal (2-T) organic device based on ionic migration mediated by an ion-transport polymer. The material possesses unique memristive properties: it is reversibly switchable, shows tens of conductive states, presents Hebbian learning demonstrated by spiking time dependent plasticity (STDP), and behaves with both short- (STM) an…
UWSIO: Towards automatic orchestration for the deployment of 5G monitoring services from bare metal
2018
The next generation mobile networks 5G are currently being intensively developed and standardized globally, with commercial prototyping 5G connections already emerging. At the 5G system level, one of the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) defining 5G is substantially reduced service creation time for 5G network operators and/or service providers to increase the system efficiency and thus reduce operational costs. In this work, we focus on realize this challenging KPI in terms of speedy creation of monitoring services for 5G operators from scratch (no operating system pre-installed). A new 5G infrastructure orchestrator UWSIO is proposed to achieve fully automated deployment of 5G monitoring …
Towards Concrete Syntax Based Find for Graphical Domain Specific Languages
2019
One of the main reasons why Model-Driven Engineering (MDE) technologies including Domain-specific modelling languages (DSML) have not reached the expected acceptance in the industry is a poor tool support. One of the features with a limited support even in commercial modelling tools is search (find). Typically, MDE tools support only a simple keyword-based textual search functionality. The same is true for the tools built using Domain-specific language (DSL) tool definition frameworks. It is proposed to provide the concrete syntax-based find functionality as a service of a DSL tool definition framework. The find diagrams are defined in a concrete syntax of a DSL. A definition of a DSL is us…
