Elements of Language Theory

1988

In this chapter we shall review the mathematical and computer science background on which the presentation in this book is based. We shall discuss the elements of discrete mathematics and formal language theory, emphasizing those issues that are of importance from the point of view of context-free parsing. We shall devote a considerable part of this chapter to matters such as random access machines and computational complexity. These will be relevant later when we derive efficient algorithms for parsing theoretic problems or prove lower bounds for the complexity of these problems. In this chapter we shall also discuss a general class of formal language descriptors called “rewriting systems”…

The PASSI and Agile PASSI MAS Meta-models Compared with a Unifying Proposal

2005

A great number of processes for multi-agent systems design have been presented in last years to support the different approaches to agent-oriented design; each process is specific for a particular class of problems and it instantiates a specific MAS meta-model. These differences produce inconsistences and overlaps: a MAS meta-model may define a term not referred by another, or the same term can be used with a different meaning. We think that the lack of a standardization may cause a significant delay to the diffusion of the agent paradigm outside research context. Working for this unification goal, it is also necessary to define in unambiguous way the terms of the agent model and their rela…

A family of experiments to generate graphical user interfaces from BPMN models with stereotypes

2021

Abstract Context: A significant gap separates Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) models representing processes from the design of Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs). Objective: This paper reports on a family of experiments to validate a method to automatically generate GUIs from BPMN models using stereotypes complemented with UML class primitives, and transformation rules. Method: We conducted two replications (23 and 31 subjects respectively) in which we compared two methods to generate GUIs from BPMN models; one automatic (using Stereotyped BPMN models) and one manual (using Non-stereotyped BPMN models). The study focuses on comparing effort, accuracy, and satisfaction (in terms of …

Filtering design for two-dimensional Markovian jump systems with state-delays and deficient mode information

2014

This paper is concerned with the problem of H"~ filtering for a class of two-dimensional Markovian jump linear systems described by the Fornasini-Marchesini local state-space model. The systems under consideration are subject to state-delays and deficient mode information in the Markov chain. The description of deficient mode information is comprehensive that simultaneously includes the exactly known, partially unknown and uncertain transition probabilities. By invoking the properties of the transition probability matrix, together with the convexification of uncertain domains, a new H"~ performance analysis criterion for the filtering error system is firstly derived. Then, via some matrix i…

Revista electrónica de investigación y evaluación educativa

2014

Evaluating Bug-Fixing in Software Product Lines

2016

[Background] Bug-fixing could be complex in industrial practice since thousands of products share features in their configuration. Despite the importance and complexity of bug-fixing, there is still a lack of empirical data about the difficulties found in industrial Software Product Lines (SPLs). [Aims] This paper aims to evaluate engineers' performance fixing errors and propagating the fixes to other configured products in the context of an industrial SPL. [Method] We designed and conducted an empirical study to collect data with regard to bug-fixing tasks within the context of a Induction Hob SPL in the BSH group, the largest manufacturer of home appliances in Europe. [Results] We found t…

The on-line curvilinear component analysis (onCCA) for real-time data reduction

2015

Real time pattern recognition applications often deal with high dimensional data, which require a data reduction step which is only performed offline. However, this loses the possibility of adaption to a changing environment. This is also true for other applications different from pattern recognition, like data visualization for input inspection. Only linear projections, like the principal component analysis, can work in real time by using iterative algorithms while all known nonlinear techniques cannot be implemented in such a way and actually always work on the whole database at each epoch. Among these nonlinear tools, the Curvilinear Component Analysis (CCA), which is a non-convex techni…

Project Management Information Systems (PMISs): A Statistical-Based Analysis for the Evaluation of Software Packages Features

2021

Project Managers (PMs) working in competitive markets are finding Project Management Information Systems (PMISs) useful for planning, organizing and controlling projects of varying complexity. A wide variety of PMIS software is available, suitable for projects differing in scope and user needs. This paper identifies the most useful features found in PMISs. An extensive literature review and analysis of commercial software is made to identify the main features of PMISs. Afterwards, the list is reduced by a panel of project management experts, and a statistical analysis is performed on data acquired by means of two different surveys. The relative importance of listed features is properly comp…

Querytogether : Enabling entity-centric exploration in multi-device collaborative search

2018

Collaborative and co-located information access is becoming increasingly common. However, fairly little attention has been devoted to the design of ubiquitous computing approaches for spontaneous exploration of large information spaces enabling co-located collaboration. We investigate whether an entity-based user interface provides a solution to support co-located search on heterogeneous devices. We present the design and implementation of QueryTogether, a multi-device collaborative search tool through which entities such as people, documents, and keywords can be used to compose queries that can be shared to a public screen or specific users with easy touch enabled interaction. We conducted…
