Higher Education Reforms in Finland

2019

Finland has implemented several higher education (HE) reforms over the past decades in order to make its HE system more competitive in the global educational markets. These reforms are in line with the developments in other Western higher education systems in which the transposition of principles and philosophy from the private sector into the public sector has become more common or even a norm thus reinterpreting the economic, social and cultural basis of higher education (e.g. Exworthy & Halford 1999). Furthermore, the implementation of the reforms is a response to the rapidly changing needs of the labour markets. In Finland, Bologna process was partly incorporated to be part of the react…

MASPEGHI 2004 Mechanisms for Speialization, Generalization and Inheritance

2005

Rapport de Recherche Projet OCL, N° I3S/RR-2004-15-FR; International audience; MASPEGHI 2004 is the third edition of the MASPEGHI workshop. This year the organizers of both the ECOOP 2002 Inheritance Workshop and MASPEGHI 2003 came together to enlarge the scope of the workshop and to address new challenges. We succeeded in gathering a diverse group of researchers and practitioners interested in mechanisms for managing specialization and generalization of programming language components. The workshop contained a series of presentations with discussions as well as group work, and the interplay between the more than 22 highly skilled and inspiring people from many different communities gave ri…

Supravital Uptake of Methylene Blue by Dendritic Cells within Stratified Squamous Epithelia: a Light and Electron Microscope Study

1996

Electron microscopic data on methylene blue staining of dendritic cells in the epithelia of the soft palate and skin of the mouse after supravital dye injection are presented. The ultra-structural details were compared with corresponding light microscopic findings. Methylene blue stained tissue was fixed by immersion in a paraformaldehyde-glutaraldehyde solution containing phosphomolybdic acid. The ensuing dye precipitate was stabilized by ammonium heptamolybdate. The light microscopic investigation revealed that selective staining of dendritic cells depended on the presence of ambient oxygen. In addition, delicate morphological characteristics, like spinous structures of the dendrites, wer…

ComPWA: A common amplitude analysis framework for PANDA

2014

A large part of the physics program of the PANDA experiment at FAIR deals with the search for new conventional and exotic hadronic states like e.g. hybrids and glueballs. For many analyses PANDA will need an amplitude analysis, e.g. a partial wave analysis (PWA), to identify possible candidates and for the classification of known states. Therefore, a new, agile and efficient amplitude analysis framework ComPWA is under development. It is modularized to provide easy extension with models and formalisms as well as fitting of multiple datasets, even from different experiments. Experience from existing PWA programs was used to fix the requirements of the framework and to prevent it from restric…

Digitization and preservation of cultural heritage: The CEPROQHA approach

2017

The humanity has always learned from the previous experiences for many reasons. The national heritage proves to be a great way to discover a nation's history. As a result, these priceless cultural items have a special attention. However, Since the wide adoption of new digital technologies, documenting, storing, and exhibiting cultural heritage assets became more affordable and reliable. These digital records are then used in several applications. Researchers saw the opportunity to use digital heritage recordings for long-term preservation. In this paper, we present the research progress in cultural heritage digital processing and preservation, highlighting the most impactful advances. Addit…

Fuzzy Set Theory as a Methodological Bridge between Hard Sciences and Humanities

2013

In this paper, we will investigate the possible role of fuzzy set theory (FST), and more generally the ensemble of technologies and theoretical approaches known as soft computing, as a methodological bridge between hard sciences and humanities. We will try, building on previous works, to investigate the “family links” between these disciplines and show how FST may be of help in promoting a connection between the “two cultures”. We will discuss Carnap and his paradox of explication, the dilemma between imagination and rigor according to Bateson, the problem of interdisciplinarity, and the consequences of precision and exactness. Robust H∞ filtering for networked control systems with markovian jumps and packet dropouts

2014

Published version of an article in the journal: Modeling, Identification and Control. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.4173/mic.2014.3.3 Open Access This paper deals with the H∞ filtering problem for uncertain networked control systems. In the study, network-induced delays, limited communication capacity due to signal quantization and packet dropout are all taken into consideration. The finite distributed delays with probability of occurrence in a random way is introduced in the network. The packet dropout is described by a Bernoulli process. The system is modeled as Markovian jumps system with partially known transition probabilities. A full-order filter is designe…

Experimental Assessment of the Backoff Behavior of Commercial IEEE 802.11b Network Cards

2007

It has been observed that different IEEE 802.11 commercial cards produced by different vendors experience different performance, either when accessing alone the channel, as well as when competing against each other. These differences persist also when thorough measurement methodologies (such as RF shielding, laptop rotation, etc) are applied, and alignment of the environmental factors (same laptop models, traffic generators, etc) is carried out. This paper provides an extensive experimental characterization of the backoff operation of six commercial NIC cards. It suggests a relevant methodological approach, namely a repeatable, well defined, set of experiments, for such a characterization. …
