Damned If You Do and Damned If You Don’t: Two Masters
2018
Available online: 05 June 2018 We study common agency problems in which two principals (groups) make costly commitments to incentives that are conditioned on imperfect signals of the agent's action. Our framework allows for incentives to be either rewards or punishments. For our basic model we obtain a unique equilibrium, which typically involves randomization by both principals. Greater similarity between principals leads to more aggressive competition. The principals weakly prefer punishment to rewards, sometimes strictly. With rewards an agent voluntarily joins both groups with punishment it depends on whether severe punishments are feasible and cheap for the principals. We study whether…
Finnish forest-based companies in transition to the circular bioeconomy : drivers, organizational resources and innovations
2020
Abstract Forest-based businesses are the center of the transition to the sustainable and competitive circular bioeconomy in Finland. This study explores the transition of Finnish FBS firms to new business models, with a focus on the organizational resources and capabilities needed for transition. It also identifies the important elements in the business environment and the role of innovations in this process. The study uses thematic interviews with managers from various FBS firms and companies from interfacing sectors, all of which have operations in Finland. Despite the differences between firms, the study finds many common drivers and resources that FBS companies highlight as significant …
A software system to teach economics to secondary school and first year engineering students
2009
[EN] In this paper, we present a graphical user interface which has been devised to teach the basic concepts of economics in secondary schools and first year engineering courses. The application allows students to vary certain parameters and visually observe the effect on the supply and demand curves. The system has been developed in Matlab and employed in a secondary school in Spain. The first results are presented.
Open-Source software in OR education
2010
24th European Conference on Operational Research (EURO XXIV). Lisboa, 11 a 14 de Julho de 2010 (Comunicação). This contribution will focus on Computational Tools of Open-Source Software in OR Education. Some educational experiences in the area of Forecasting; Simulation; Graphs and Networks; Decision Theory and Linear Programming based on: R 2.10.0, Scilab 5.1.1 and an Open Source Spreadsheet will be illustrated, with a brief reference to the acceptance of pupils and colleagues.
Towards Understanding Startup Product Development as Effectual Entrepreneurial Behaviors
2017
With the rapid development of technology and competitiveness of IT sectors, the speed of learning and evolving is vital for success of software startups. However, software startups often face with multiple technical and business challenges, which lengthen the duration of their idea-to-launch process. Little is known about the relation of entrepreneurial characteristics of software startups and their product development. We conducted an empirical study on twenty software startups to understand their challenges that leads long idea-to-launch processes. Six engineering-related challenges were identified and interpreted via a lens of an entrepreneurial behavior theory. Our main finding is that …
Analysis of magnetohydrodynamic generator driven by thermoacoustic engine for deep Space applications
2020
This paper discusses the results of theoretical and experimental investigation of magnetohydrodynamic generator with liquid metal working body. This electric machine is used to convert mechanical energy, supplied by thermoacoustic engine, to an AC form of electrical energy. The purpose of this technology is an electricity production in deep Space, potentially suitable for long term missions far away from Sun.
A Geant4 simulation package for the sage spectrometer
2012
International audience; A comprehensive Geant4 simulation was built for the SAGE spectrometer. The simulation package includes the silicon and germanium detectors, the mechanical structure and the electromagnetic fields present in SAGE. This simulation can be used for making predictions through simulating experiments and for comparing simulated and experimental data to better understand the underlying physics.
Design and Development of a Labview Application for the Measurement of the Complex Impedance of a Fuel Cell in Real Time
2014
International audience; To optimize the performance of fuel cells and to deepen the knowledge of their behavior, it is necessary to make measurements in real time. To run such a measure, it is necessary to use specific software and hardware tools to instrumentation fuel cells. In this context, we presented the steps of designing and developing an application for the measurement of the complex impedance by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy method (EIS) using LabVIEW® software. The experimental results are obtained using a Ballard Nexa® PEM fuel cell, an electronic load produced in our laboratory and application developed by the LabVIEW® software.
Evolutionary White-Box Software Test with the EvoTest Framework: A Progress Report
2009
Evolutionary white-box software testing has been extensively researched but is not yet applied in industry. In order to investigate the reasons for this, we evaluated a prototype version of a tool, representing the state-of-the-art for evolutionary structural testing, which is targeted at industrial use. The focus was on the applicability of the structural test tool in the industrial context and not on assessment of the test cases generated. Four case studies, each consisting of an embedded software module from the automotive industry implemented in the C language, were evaluated with the tool. The case studies had to be customized to cope with the limitations of the tool and in all, test c…
Disaster Prevention Integrated into Commonly Used Web Rendered Systems with GIS Capabilities
2014
The end of the 20th century brought a remarkable increase in the field of positioning techniques and communications, making them visible and available to the public, which led to an unprecedented interconnectivity. At the same time, disasters are part of our life. Regardless of their nature, measures can be taken, in order to prevent and mitigate their effects, by anticipative preparation or by avoiding the calamity area (if possible). To this end, this paper presents an integrated system, composed of a software component, a hardware component, and a decision-making human element, all having the declared role of diminishing or eliminating human and material losses.
