Combining traditional and indirect augmented reality for indoor crowded environments. A case study on the Casa Batlló museum

2017

Abstract Mobile audio-guides are currently being used in museums to enhance the visitors’ experience. Over the past few years, some Augmented Reality (AR) solutions have been explored in this context, making it possible to provide augmented visual and sonic stimuli through the use of smartphones. However, the special conditions of museums (e.g. artificial markers cannot be used, small, crowded rooms, etc.) and the limited computational capacity of smartphones mean that there are important restrictions in the use of this technology. In this paper we introduce a novel mobile augmented guide for the Casa Batllo museum (Barcelona, Spain) which is based on a combination of traditional and indire…

Used and interaction in technological platforms of open source to improve the linguistic competence in computer engineers

2017

The higher education through virtual environment is students centered oriented to the interactive learning, in situations to be closer to the real world; for that reason, teachers must have new communicative competences, nonverbal and with a learning innovative approach which allows to guide their students in the complex process of acquiring knowledge even more in a foreign language. In the same context, the use of technologic platforms of open code is becoming in the best way to give solutions which meet the actual needs of the process of acquiring a second language; on this basis, the present research is focused in the analysis and use of Open Source tools as alternative of complementary …

Multipactor Analysis in Coaxial Waveguides for Satellite Applications using Frequency-Domain Methods

2006

This work presents the analysis, manufacturing and testing of a coaxial sample in order to investigate the multipactor effect in this kind of waveguide structures. Several in-home and commercial software have been used to design a quarter-wave transformer coaxial circuit centered at 1.35 GHz. The multipactor analysis of this device has been carried out allowing the prediction of the RF breakdown multipactor threshold. Moreover, the multipactor onset of such a prototype has been measured showing a very good agreement with our simulations. In addition to this, comparison has been also done with results from the technical literature fully validating the new algorithm developed.

JamMo - Developmentally designed software for children’s mobile music-making

2009

Mobile learning is one of the most recent branches in educational research. In contrast to traditional classroom learning, mobile learning extends outside the classroom, allowing mobility and flexible interaction between formal and informal learning. Up to this date, only few music based mobile applications have been developed for educational purposes and especially for young children. In the present study, software JamMo will be designed for Nokia N810 Internet tablet. JamMo aims at child-centred, intelligent musical engineering and pedagogical design of stand-alone, ad hoc and networked creative music making. It is targeted to 3–12-year-old children including those with moderate learning …

Review of authoring tools for the design of educational resources

2013

Weighted Evaluation Framework for Cross-Platform App Development Approaches

2016

Cross-platform app development is very challenging, although only two platforms with significant market share (iOS and Android) remain. While device fragmentation – multiple, only partly compatible versions of a platform – has been complicating matters already, the need to target different device classes is a new emergence. Smartphones and tablets are relatively similar but app-enabled devices such as TVs and even cars typically have differing capabilities. To facilitate usage of cross-platform app development approaches, we present work on an evaluation framework. Our framework provides a set of up-to-date evaluation criteria. Unlike prior work on this topic, it offers weighted assessment …

Computer-aided study of the gas flow within a natural gas storage and the associated collection network

2017

The current paper presents a computer-aided analysis of the way in which a natural gas storage created in a depleted gas deposit and the associated gas collection network are operated, both during the extraction phase and during the injection phase. In a first step, an analysis is carried out on a two-dimensional, nonstationary model for the gas storage, based on the deposit’s geometry and the rock properties, but also on the gas motions. Also, a dynamic simulation of the injection and extraction processes is unfolded, allowing the study and optimisation of elements such as well placement and gas flows through the wells with the goal of maximising the storable gas quantities. A second model…

Querying NoSQL-based crowdsourcing systems efficiently

2016

In this paper, we provide a novel approach for effectively and efficiently support query processing tasks in novel NoSQL crowdsourcing systems. The idea of our method is to exploit the social knowledge available from reviews about products of any kind, freely provided by customers through specialized web sites. We thus define a NoSQL database system for large collections of product reviews, where queries can be expressed in terms of natural language sentences whose answers are modeled as lists of products ranked based on the relevance of reviews w.r.t. the natural language sentences. The best ranked products in the result list can be seen as the best hints for the user based on crowd opinio…

On the Design of Spontaneous Networks Using a P2P Approach and Bluetooth

2005

In this paper, we address the design of spontaneous networks using a peer to peer (P2P) and Bluetooth technology. A spontaneous network is a small infrastructureless network formed when a group of people come together to participate in some collaborative activity. In this work, we develop a base library and application work ground for easy spontaneous networks development. Based on it, we present an experimental application that provides spontaneous networks with context and transparent services to interchange resources between peers. We describe the overall network architecture and present details of the implementation steps taken to create our P2P and Bluetooth based application. Finally …

Managing expert knowledge in water network expansion project implementation

2021

[EN] The implementation of expansion projects of water networks supplying growing cities is deemed to be a complex decision-making problem involving both technical aspects and expert knowledge. Management and control processes must rely on experts in the field whose know-how must be coupled with techniques able to deal with the natural subjectivity that affects input evaluations. Given the presence of many decision-making elements, the choice of proper hydraulic technical parameters may be linked to the main aspects of analysis requiring formal expert evaluation. In this contribution, the simulation of hydraulic indicators is integrated with a multi-criteria approach able to eventually dete…
