Real-Life Clinical Data of Cabozantinib for Unresectable Hepatocellular Carcinoma

2021

<b><i>Introduction:</i></b> Cabozantinib has been approved by the European Medicine Agency (EMA) for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) previously treated with sorafenib. Cabozantinib is also being tested in combination with immune checkpoint inhibitors in the frontline setting. Real-life clinical data of cabozantinib for HCC are still lacking. Moreover, the prognostic factors for HCC treated with cabozantinib have not been investigated. <b><i>Methods:</i></b> We evaluated clinical data and outcome of HCC patients who received cabozantinib in the legal context of named patient use in Italy. <b><i>Results:</i></b> Ninety-six…

Sorafenib: from literature to clinical practice

2013

Sorafenib is considered the standard systemic therapy for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), in patients with well-preserved liver function (Child-Pugh A class) and advanced-stage HCC (BCLC-C) or in patients with HCC progressing after locoregional therapies, with a high grade of recommendation. The approval of sorafenib for this indication was grounded on the efficacy and the safety results reported by two international randomized, controlled trials, the SHARP and the Asia-Pacific studies. In addition, the efficacy and the safety of sorafenib in clinical practice are addressed by several field-practice experiences, including the multinational GIDEON study and the SOFIA study. Finally, further …

MicroRNA and Cardiac Stem Cell Therapy

2012

Cardiac Progenitor Cells (CPCs) are multipotent cells of the myocardium. They are located inside niches of the heart muscle, can be isolated, characterized and used for cardiac regeneration in stem cell therapy. Actually, CPCs may be isolated by tissue digestion with or without cell sorting, but it is difficult to achieve the maximum level of differentiation when these cells are implanted into a damaged myocardium. The knowledge recently acquired on small molecules of non-coding RNAs, microRNA (miRNA), may improve the use of these cells in stem cell therapy. In fact, these small molecules may be attached to devices or adminstered as they are or in combination with nanoparticles in order to …

Experimental studies on the suitability of human mesothelial cells for seeding vascular prostheses: shear stress resistance in vitro

1996

This investigation forms part of a study on the suitability of human omentum mesothelial cells (HOMES) as an alternative to endothelial cells (EC) for seeding vascular grafts. Isolated HOMES were grown in primary culture and characterized by their morphology (light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM)), as well as by fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) and immunocytochemistry. The latter two methods showed cells which were positive for smooth muscle-type actin and cytokeratin, but negative for factor VIII-related antigen. HOMES were grown to confluence on glass with or without a fibronectin coating. Controlled shear stress was applied for up to 30 min using a plate and c…

Human Endometrial Side Population Cells Exhibit Genotypic, Phenotypic and Functional Features of Somatic Stem Cells

2010

During reproductive life, the human endometrium undergoes around 480 cycles of growth, breakdown and regeneration should pregnancy not be achieved. This outstanding regenerative capacity is the basis for women's cycling and its dysfunction may be involved in the etiology of pathological disorders. Therefore, the human endometrial tissue must rely on a remarkable endometrial somatic stem cells (SSC) population. Here we explore the hypothesis that human endometrial side population (SP) cells correspond to somatic stem cells. We isolated, identified and characterized the SP corresponding to the stromal and epithelial compartments using endometrial SP genes signature, immunophenotyping and char…

Scelte terapeutiche e trattamento con sorafenib nell'epatocarcinoma: Analisi finale dello studio GIDEON in Italia

2015

Summary. Introduction. Sorafenib, an oral multikinase inhibitor, is the only targeted agent approved for the treatment of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) after demonstration to increase overall survival compared to placebo in two randomized phase III study. GIDEON (Global Investigation of therapeutic DEcisions in HCC and Of its treatment with sorafeNib) is the largest, global, non-interventional, prospective study of patients with uHCC (n>3200) treated with sorafenib in real-life clinical practice conditions. Here we report the final analysis of safety and efficacy in the Italian cohort of patients. Methods. Patients with unresectable HCC who are candidates for systemic ther…

The features of the sorting junction. Pressure balancer helps to equilibrate the pressure difference created by the presence of a droplet. The transition from shallow to deep channel mediates the transition from free to confined regime. The droplets are separated in the sorting junction according to the flow rate ratio.

A comparation of two sorting strategies. While the shallow channel guides the droplets more precisely to the sorting point, the confined droplets are more vulnerable to coalescence and break-up. The deep channel lowers the positioning precision, however, the droplets are more stable.

Water sorption isotherms of molecularly imprinted polymers. Relation between water binding and iprodione binding capacity

2017

International audience; Molecularly imprinted polymers are often used in aqueous medium in order to recognize specifically a target molecule. The molecular recognition is usually based on hydrogen bonding. In this case, water molecule presents a serious competition towards the target molecule. In this study, the water sorption by molecularly imprinted polymers was studied in aqueous medium. The molecularly imprinted polymers were specific for iprodione fungicide and were prepared using a 24 full factorial experimental design. They were synthesized using EGDMA or TRIM as crosslinker, methacrylamide or styrene as functional monomer and using bulk or precipitation polymerization. The water sor…
