Zinc isotopes in Late Pleistocene fossil teeth from a Southeast Asian cave setting preserve paleodietary information
2020
Significance Dietary habits, especially meat consumption, represent a key aspect in the behavior and evolution of fossil hominin species. Here, we explore zinc (Zn) isotope ratios in tooth enamel of fossil mammals. We show discrimination between different trophic levels and demonstrate that Zn isotopes could prove useful in paleodietary studies of fossil hominin, or other mammalian species, to assess their consumption of animal versus plant resources. We also demonstrate the high preservation potential of pristine diet-related Zn isotope ratios, even under tropical conditions with poor collagen preservation, such as the studied depositional context in Southeast Asia. However, assessing the …
Understanding the Strategies and Practices of Facebook Microcelebrities for Engaging in Sociopolitical Discourses
2022
In this paper, we study popular microcelebrities from the Global South to understand their strategies and practices on Facebook. Unlike traditional celebrities who gain their reputation through different types of physical performance, these microcelebrities attain their status by presenting themselves in a favorable way to their online followers. We conducted interviews with 19 microcelebrities from Bangladesh and analyzed our data using actor-network theory (ANT) and Goffman’s dramaturgical analysis (DA) of human interaction. We discuss the complex socio-technical ecosystem of the microcelebrity and the roles of non-human actors, such as platforms and local internet infrastructure along wi…
Nucleotide sequence of an adult-specific cuticular protein gene from the beetle Tenebrio molitor: effects of 20-hydroxyecdysone on mRNA accumulation.
1993
0962-1075 (Print) Journal Article Research Support, Non-U.S. Gov't; The accumulation of transcripts from two adult-specific cuticular genes (ACP-20 and ACP-22) is shown to be modified after addition of exogenous 20-hydroxyecdysone. In the continuous presence of high levels of the hormone, the expression of ACP-20 gene is significantly weaker than that of untreated controls, while ACP-22 expression is 2.5-fold increased. During active synthesis of the ACP messages, a 0.5 microg 20-hydroxyecdysone injection causes a rapid 2-fold increase in ACP-22 mRNA and is not able to repress ACP-20 mRNA accumulation. We conclude that these genes whose transcripts appear in an almost coordinated manner in …
Dreamless Sleep, the Embodied Mind, and Consciousness
2017
One of the major debates in classical Indian philosophy concerned whether consciousness is present or absent in dreamless sleep. The philosophical schools of Advaita Vedānta and Yoga maintained that consciousness is present in dreamless sleep, whereas the Nyāya school maintained that it is absent. Consideration of this debate, especially the reasoning used by Advaita Vedānta to rebut the Nyāya view, calls into question the standard neuroscientific way of operationally defining consciousness as “that which disappears in dreamless sleep and reappears when we wake up or dream.” The Indian debate also offers new resources for contemporary philosophy of mind. At the same time, findings from cogn…
In vivo assembly of chromatin on pBR322 sequences cloned into yeast plasmids
1989
Abstract In order to study the in vivo assembly of chromatin on prokaryotic DNA templates, we have transformed yeast cells with plasmids pAJ50 and pRB58, which contain pBR322 sequences. In both cases nucleosomes are assembled in vivo on pBR322 DNA, although the nucleosomes are not homogeneous in size. To explore whether there is any preference for nucleosome assembly along pBR322 sequences, we have used an indirect end labeling method. The results indicate that most nucleosomes are placed at random on pBR322, although the probability for histone octamers to interact with some short regions is somewhat reduced. These regions coincide with sequences in which the frequency distribution of nucl…
A long-snouted late Eifelian arthrodire from Aragon (Spain)
2021
Carolowilhelmina geognostica Carls, 1995 is a large arthrodire (Placodermi) from the Tortodus kockelianus Conodont Zone, late Eifelian, in the Eastern Iberian Cordillera in southern Aragon. The somewhat incomplete but articulated skull is preserved, showing a long tubular rostral plate, very small postnasal plates, low toothless inferognathals, and a small, slender and flat parasphenoid. Supraorbital and central sensory lines meet their antimeres at the midline of the skull, forming a straight double line. Lines along the ventral surface of the rostral plate probably belong to the suborbital branches of the infraorbital sensory lines. The combination of characters of Carolowilhelmina points…
Impact of Manaus City on the Amazon Green Ocean atmosphere: Ozone production, precursor sensitivity and aerosol load
2010
As a contribution to the Large-Scale Biosphere-Atmosphere Experiment in Amazonia – Cooperative LBA Airborne Regional Experiment (LBA-CLAIRE-2001) field campaign in the heart of the Amazon Basin, we analyzed the temporal and spatial dynamics of the urban plume of Manaus City during the wet-to-dry season transition period in July 2001. During the flights, we performed vertical stacks of crosswind transects in the urban outflow downwind of Manaus City, measuring a comprehensive set of trace constituents including O3, NO, NO2, CO, VOC, CO2, and H2O. Aerosol loads were characterized by concentrations of total aerosol number (CN) and cloud condensation nuclei (CCN), and by light scattering proper…
Preliminary observation on use of nest boxes in protected areas of Southern Sicily
2011
In this short note we summarize the data self-made nesting in nest boxes in two areas of NATURA 2000 in southern Sicily. The models of nest boxes considered host species during the study the following period: Falco naumanni, Falco tinnunculus, Athene noctua, Strix aluco, Sturnus unicolor, Parus major, Certhia brachydactyla, Corvus monedula, Passer montanus.
New Inhabitants for the Re-use of Historical Territories in South-Eastern Sicily
2021
In spite of the multifaceted criticalities that characterise the Sicilian territory, South-Eastern Sicily appears to be of particular interest due to the active role that distinguishes it from the rest of the Island. The transformation processes taking place in South-Eastern Sicily, in fact, seem to be guided by new perspectives of sustainability, local development and good governance. The mix obtained from the extraordinary amount of tangible and intangible resources, from some favourable socio-cultural circumstances and from the creation of new transportation infrastructures, has contributed to promoting new forms of reuse of the historical building heritage by Italian and overseas invest…
