Lexical Aspect and Motion Event Encoding in Homeric Greek: A Case Study - poster

2017

Lexical Aspect and Motion Event Encoding in Homeric Greek: A Case Study This paper aims to investigate the role that lexical aspect (Aktionsart) plays in motion event encoding in Homeric Greek. In particular, the role of telicity as an inherent semantic property of the verb has been recently re-evaluated within the verbal system of early Indo-European languages (Bartolotta 2016). On the basis of textual analysis of the Iliad and the Odyssey, I will argue how Homeric Greek motion verbs appear to be compatible with the entailment of the arrival of the Figure to the Ground according to their inherent telicity (see Bartolotta forthcoming). Specifically, I will focus on the Homeric verbs for ̔ru…

Lexical aspect and motion event encoding in homeric greek: a case study

2017

This paper aims to investigate the role that lexical aspect (Aktionsart) plays in motion event encoding in Homeric Greek. In particular, the role of telicity as an inherent semantic property of the verb has been recently re-evaluated within the verbal system of early Indo-European languages (Bartolotta 2016). According to Talmy (1985; 2000), a translational motion event consists of an object (Figure) that moves (Motion) through a path (Path) with respect to another reference object (Ground). On the basis of textual analysis of the Iliad and the Odyssey, I will argue how Homeric Greek motion verbs turn out to be compatible with the entailment of the arrival of the Figure to the Ground accordi…

Reaching an Endpoint: Verbal Root Telicity and Motion Event Encoding in Homeric Greek

2020

Spatial coherence and potential predictability of intraseasonal descriptors of the rainy season in Soudano-Sahelian Africa : application to the pearl…

2010

The aim of this thesis is twofold : (i) fill a lack of knowledge about the spatial coherence and seasonal predictability of the intraseasonal characteristics (ISC) of the soudano-sahelian rainy season. These ISC are the seasonal rainfall amount (S), the daily rainfall frequency > 1 mm (O), the daily rainfall mean intensity (I), the dates of the onset and withdrawal of the rainy season, the mean length of the dry (LDS) and/or wet spells (LWS) ; (ii) document the climate-agriculture relationship over the Niamey area based on the millet crop example. From FRIEND-AOC daily rainfall records (1950-2000) for a 136 stations-network located in Senegal, Mali, Burkina-Faso and Niger, the spatial cohere…

A fast fusion technique for fingerprint and iris spatial descriptors in multimodal biometric systems

2014

Multimodal biometric identification systems aim to combine two or more physical or behavioral traits to provide optimal False Acceptance Rate (FAR) and False Rejection Rate (FRR). In this paper a new fusion technique for fingerprint and iris spatial descriptors with a low execution time is presented. The report focuses on spatial fusion strategies, offering and proposing a modern perspective on multi-biometrics. In greater detail, a spatial-based approach and a homogeneous biometric vector, integrating iris and fingerprint data, are generated, fused, and processed for the overall system matching score. The goal of this approach is to demonstrate that, by using spatial iris features followin…

Pre- and post-ictal brain activity characterization using combined source decomposition and connectivity estimation in epileptic children

2019

In this research, the study of functional connectivity between sources of electroencephalogram (EEG) activity assessed for different classes (well before seizure, preictal and post-ictal) was performed. EEG recordings were acquired from 12 subjects with focal epilepsy. Then, ten common spatial patterns (CSP) were obtained for EEG segments describing 95% of Riemannian distance between pairs of classes, followed by estimation of multivariate autoregressive (MVAR) models’ coefficients. The MVAR models were further used to extract coherence as a functional connectivity measures. Our results show that the coherence between CSP sources differs between baseline and pre-ictal segments: it has the l…

2013

First data about the habitat use in a population of Natrix natrix from Sicily. In the present paper the preliminary results of an investigation carried out on a Sicilian population of the grass snake (Natrix natrix) are reported. The leading aim of this study is to compare habitat use among three different classes of individuals (males, females, immatures), using as input the density of observations in four habitat types. Field studies were conducted beside a reservoir (“Lago di Scanzano”), located about 40 km from Palermo (western Sicily). Our results indicate spatial and temporal differences among groups. Young individuals were observed more frequently between April and May along wet mead…

Quantum Finite One-Counter Automata

1999

In this paper the notion of quantum finite one-counter automata (QF1CA) is introduced. Introduction of the notion is similar to that of the 2-way quantum finite state automata in [1]. The well-formedness conditions for the automata are specified ensuring unitarity of evolution. A special kind of QF1CA, called simple, that satisfies the well-formedness conditions is introduced. That allows specify rules for constructing such automata more naturally and simpler than in general case. Possible models of language recognition by QF1CA are considered. The recognition of some languages by QF1CA is shown and compared with recognition by probabilistic counterparts.
