State Without Territory: a legal-political heresy

2021

The sovereign, territorial, nation state form has imposed itself globally. Nevertheless, as Carl Schmitt points out: «Statehood is not a universal concept, valid for all times and all peoples». In other words, state is not the only possible way to establish a relationship between space, humanity and power. This paper intends to historicise the current geopolitical paradigm and drafting a heresy of the public law doctrine: a State Without Territory, a diasporic political community reclaiming some of the traditional government functions. In order to rethink the state concept, a pattern that shapes and affects so strongly both external reality and our minds, a methodology is needed. The author…

Within the symbolic world of the prehistoric hunters: A GIS-based and 3D model analysis of sites with complexes of linear incisions in western Sicily

2021

Abstract The prehistoric peopling of Sicily has left scattered traces of symbolic activities through well-known rock art expressions in caves and rock shelters located all around the island (among the most significant, the sites of Addaura, Racchio and Genovese). A peculiar phenomenon is the incision of linear signs, often grouped on the same rocky walls, hidden in fissures or placed at the entrance of the underground chambers of caves. In this report, we investigate a sample of these graphic expressions from a spatial and technical point of view. A GIS-based approach presents the territorial pattern providing insight, on a macroscale, into the intentional positioning of the sign complexes.…

Memoria, spazio, identità. Una premessa

2023

Memory, which has always been a subject of research and reflection, entered by right with Émile Durkheim and Marcel Mauss into the space of 'total social facts', i.e. the group of those aspects of human behaviour that support the ideological structure of social universes and regulate the capacity to perform a given action, regardless of intentionality, of both individuals and groups. What emerges is the problematic nature of the very nature of memory and its relationship to history and historians.

Grammatizzazioni dello spazio-corpo: tra algoritmizzazione ed eccedenze

2015

South-eastern Sicily: a counterfactual post-metropolis

2017

Postmetropolis is an ambitious term that could be summarized as the "postmodern metropolis." With it Edward W. Soja (2000) aims to define the globalized city that he supposes to be involved in a radical transition process that began with the post-modern city. In relation to these considerations, the article explores the post-metropolitan profile of South-eastern Sicily through: a socio-economic outlook describing the characteristics of demography, employment and income in this part of Sicily; a spatial analysis of housing and land use; and finally an institutional description of the administrative state of the art in Syracuse, Ragusa and their surroundings. Each section describes the most c…

Geographical Distribution of Crime: A Spatial Econometric Analysis

2007

Since long time social sciences have focused their attention on the causes of crime activities and this attention evolved over time. The sociological school emphasised the role of neighbourhood in delinquency activities, their stability over time and the existence of a negative relation between crimes and business centres (Shaw and McKay, 1942). This perspective stimulated the analysis of the existing nexus between crime activities and their geographical proximity. The economics approach moved differently. Since late 60s the economic analyses devoted their attention to the detection of mechanisms affecting the choice and behaviour of criminals (Becker, 1968; Stigler, 1970; Ehrlich, 1973). B…
