The conference is hosted by the Doctoral School for European Integration and Baltic Sea Region Studies, recently established at the university. The publication is a conference volume – Volume I in an anticipated series of publications featuring research papers by doctoral students issued in two-year intervals. -- All contributions have been double-blind peer reviewed.

Most of Eastern Africa has arid and semi-arid climate with high space-time variability in rainfall. The droughts are very common in this region, and often persist for several years, preceded or followed by extreme floods. Most of the livelihoods and socio-economic activities however remain rain-dependent leading to severe negative impacts during the periods of occurrence of climate extremes. It has been noted that one extreme event was capable of reversing national economic growth made over a period of several years. Quantum versus Probabilistic One-Way Finite Automata with Counter

The paper adds the one-counter one-way finite automaton [6] to the list of classical computing devices having quantum counterparts more powerful in some cases. Specifically, two languages are considered, the first is not recognizable by deterministic one-counter one-way finite automata, the second is not recognizable with bounded error by probabilistic one-counter one-way finite automata, but each recognizable with bounded error by a quantum one-counter one-way finite automaton. This result contrasts the case of one-way finite automata without counter, where it is known [5] that the quantum device is actually less powerful than its classical counterpart.

Abstract A number of applications rely on the availability of high resolution TIR data, both in terms of spatial and temporal resolution, as well as in terms of spectral configuration. A consensus exists among the thermal community regarding the lack of such a kind of data, since only one operational sensor is currently providing multispectral TIR data at high spatial resolution (the case of ASTER, at 90 m spatial resolution and a 16-day revisit time). The aim of this paper is to explain how GIS is used for historical data processing to understand time-space dynamics. Spatial and economic segregation : an analysis in terms of employment and education in urban spaces

Cities are not homogeneous territories: some neighborhoods concentrate wealth while others face difficulties such as unemployment, poverty, exclusion or crime. These fractures are a consequence of urban segregation, i.e. socioeconomic inequalities spatial pattern. To that matter, this thesis addresses three objectives: (i) the characterization and explanation of segregated urban structures appearance, (ii) the link between segregation and labor market, and eventually (iii) the link between segregation and education.
