Impact of molecular weight on the formation of electrosprayed chitosan microcapsules as delivery vehicles for bioactive compounds.

The molecular weight of chitosan is one of its most determinant characteristics, which affects its processability and its performance as a biomaterial. However, information about the effect of this parameter on the formation of electrosprayed chitosan microcapsules is scarce. In this work, the impact of chitosan molecular weight on its electrosprayability was studied and correlated with its effect on the viscosity, surface tension and electrical conductivity of solutions. New pregnane and phenolic glycosides from Solenostemma argel.

Abstract From the aerial parts, pericarps and roots of Solenostemma argel, three new pregnane glycosides (1–3) with two known ones and a new phenolic glycoside (4) have been isolated. Their structures were established by extensive 1D – and 2D NMR and mass spectroscopic analysis. The cytotoxicity of all compounds was evaluated against two human tumor cell lines (SW 480, MCF-7), but none of them was active in the concentration range 0.9–59.0 μM. Compounds 2 and the known argeloside F at non toxic concentrations for the PBMCs (27.3 μM and 27.6 μM, respectively) significantly decreased the Il-1β production by LPS-stimulated PBMCs. Abstract New complexes of the type R 3 PAuL or (R 3 PAu) 2 (μ-L) where R=ethyl or phenyl and L=6-thioguanine, 2, 6- dithioxanthine, 2, 4-dithiouracil and/or dithioerythritol have been prepared. These complexes have been identified by using elemental analysis, 1 H, 13 C and 31 P NMR spectroscopy. The structures have been proposed based on these spectroscopic studies. Sulfur appears to be the binding site in disubstituted complexes of 2, 4-dithiouracil and 1, 4-dithioerythritol, while the phosphine gold( I ) moieties appear to be S and N bonded in 2, 6-dithioxanthine and 6-thioguanine. The potential use of these complexes as antitumor drugs is discussed.

Exploring the Reactivity and Biological Effects of Heteroleptic N-Heterocyclic Carbene Gold(I)- Alkynyl Complexes

With the aim to explore the effects of different organometallic ligands on the reactivity and biological properties of a series of twelve heteroleptic AuI complexes, of general formula [Au(NHC)(alkynyl)] (NHC = benzimidazolylidene or 1,3-dihydroimidazolylidene) were synthesized and characterized by 1H and 13C NMR and elemental analysis, and in some cases also by X-ray diffraction. Monoterpene derivatives from the flowers of Ferulago campestris, (Apiaceae).

Ferulago campestris (Besser) Grec., (Ferula galbanifera (Mill) Kock. = F. campestris), finocchiazzo, is an annual or perennial herb of the Mediterranean area. In this paper the phytochemical studies of the CH2Cl2 and MeOH extracts of the flowers are described. Several ferulol derivatives and a new 10-hydroxy-verbenone ester (7) were isolated. The structure of the new compound was established by extensive NMR analysis, including HMBC and HSQC pulse sequences.

Oxygenated Cembrene Diterpenes from Sarcophyton convolutum: Cytotoxic Sarcoconvolutum A–E

The soft coral genus Sarcophyton contains the enzymatic machinery to synthesize a multitude of cembrene-type diterpenes. Herein, highly oxygenated cembrenoids, sarcoconvolutum A–E (1–5) were purified and characterized from an ethyl acetate extract of the red sea soft coral, Sarcophyton convolutum. Compounds were assemblies according to spectroscopic methods including FTIR, 1D- and 2D-NMR as well as HRMS. Metabolite cytotoxicity was tested against lung adenocarcinoma, cervical cancer, and oral-cavity carcinoma (A549, HeLa and HSC-2, respectively). The most cytotoxic compound, (4) was observed to be active against cell lines A549 and HSC-2 with IC50 values of 49.70 and 53.17 μM, respectively.

Organotin(IV) compounds are known to promote the direct synthesis of organic carbonates from carbon dioxide and alcohols. In the past, structural studies have highlighted that the carbonato moiety is a recurring ligand of tin species collected during CO2 pressurized reactions. In a mimetic approach and in order to achieve an available and recyclable precursor, the title compound (n-Bu2Sn)2O(CO3) (1) was prepared in a single step by reacting commercial di-n-butyltin dichloride with an aqueous solution of sodium carbonate. An intriguing absorption peak around ∼270 nm (4.59 eV) has been recurrently recorded in aqueous solutions of salts, sugars, amino acids, in the free-solute zone (exclusion zone) adjacent to various hydrophilic surfaces, as well as a transient in the conversion process of ice to water. The corresponding associated fluorescence has been observed in the interval 480–490 nm (2.58–2.53 eV). Theoretical electronic spectra of 2-aminopurine in vapor and in water

The accurate quantum chemical CASSCF and CASPT2 methods combined with a Monte Carlo procedure to mimic solvation effects have been used in the calculation of the spectroscopic properties of two tautomers of 2-aminopurine (2AP). Absorption and emission spectra have been simulated both in vacuum and in aqueous environment. State and transition energies and properties have been obtained with high accuracy, leading to the assignment of the most important spectroscopic features. Photoassisted Oxidation of the Recalcitrant Cyanuric Acid Substrate in Aqueous ZnO Suspensions

The photoassisted oxidative transformation of the highly recalcitrant cyanuric acid was examined in the liquid−solid regime at pH 3 and natural pH 7.5 under UV irradiation in oxygen- and ozone-saturated ZnO suspensions using ZnO as a photomediator. Loss of cyanuric acid was assayed by HPLC UV absorption spectroscopy, whereas intermediates and final products were determined by HPLC ion chromatography (IC), by MS techniques using an electrospray ionization mass spectrometer operated in the negative-ion mode, and by FT-IR spectroscopy.
