The strong infrared absorption in the ν3 S–F stretching region of sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) near 948 cm−1 makes it a powerful greenhouse gas. Although its present concentration in the atmosphere is very low, it is increasing rapidly, due to industrial pollution. The ground state population of this heavy species is only 32% at room temperature and thus many hot bands are present. Consequently, a reliable remote-sensing spectroscopic detection and monitoring of this species require an accurate modelling of these hot bands. Optical investigation of spin-crossover in cobalt(II) bis-terpy complexes

Abstract The spin transition of the [Co(terpy) 2 ] 2+ complex (terpy = 2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine) is analysed based on experimental data from optical spectroscopy and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The single crystal absorption spectrum of [Co(terpy) 2 ](ClO 4 ) 2 shows an asymmetric absorption band at 14 400 cm −1 with an intensity typical for a spin-allowed d–d transition and a temperature behaviour typical for a thermal spin transition. Abstract The spin-crossover compound [Fe(pic) 3 ]Cl 2 EtOH (pic = 2-picolylamine) shows an unusual two-step spin transition. This is thought to be caused by specific nearest-neighbour interactions and short-range correlations and requires a theoretical treatment of the elastic interactions between the spin-changing molecules beyond the mean-field approximation. Such short-range correlations also influence the high-spin → low-spin relaxation following the light-induced population of the high-spin state at cryogenic temperatures, leading to characteristic deviations from the predictions of a mean-field treatment. Spectroscopic signatures for planar equilibrium geometries in methyl-substituted oligothiophenes

In recent studies it was demonstrated that temperature-dependent optical spectroscopy is a valuable tool for revealing the differences in the geometries of flexible molecules like oligothiophenes (OTs) in the ground (S0) and first excited (S1) electronic states, by examining the symmetry relations between the absorption and emission spectra: while at low temperature the spectra show mirror symmetry, pointing to planar geometries in S0 and S1, the symmetry relation breaks down at ambient temperature due to thermal population of torsional modes. The photochemistry of benzophenone, a paradigmatic organic molecule for photosensitization, was investigated by means of surface-hopping ab initio molecular dynamics. Different mechanisms were found to be relevant within the first 600 fs after excitation; the long-debated direct (S1 → T1) and indirect (S1 → T2 → T1) mechanisms for population of the low-lying triplet state are both possible, with the latter being prevalent. Moreover, we established the existence of a kinetic equilibrium between the two triplet states, never observed before. Quinoidal oligothiophenes: towards biradical ground-state species.

A family of quinoidal oligothiophenes, from the dimer to the hexamer, with fused bis(butoxymethyl)cyclopentane groups has been extensively investigated by means of electronic and vibrational spectroscopy, electrochemical measurements, and density functional calculations. The latter predict that the electronic ground state always corresponds to a singlet state and that, for the longest oligomers, this state has biradical character that increases with increasing oligomer length. Origin of the large spectral shift in electroluminescence in a blue light emitting cationic iridium(III) complex

A new, but archetypal compound [ Ir( ppy- F-2) (2)Me(4)phen] PF6, where ppy- F2 is 2-(2',4'- fluorophenyl) pyridine and Me(4)phen is 3,4,7,8- tetramethyl- 1,10- phenanthroline, was synthesized and used to prepare a solid-state light-emitting electrochemical cell (LEEC). This complex emits blue light with a maximum at 476 nm when photoexcited in a thin film, with a photoluminescence quantum yield of 52%. It yields an efficient single-component solid-state electroluminescence device with a current efficiency reaching 5.5 cd A(-1) and a maximum power efficiency of 5.8 Lm Watt(-1). A new 3-D polymeric spin transition compound: [tris(1,4-bis(tetrazol-1-yl)butane-N1,N 1′)iron(II)] bis(perchlorate)

A series of novel polymeric compounds of formula [M(btzb)3][ClO4]2 (Mll = Fe, Ni or Cu) with btzb = 1,4-bis-(tetrazol-1-yl)butane have been prepared and their physical properties investigated. The btzb ligand has been prepared and its crystal structure determined, together with a tentative crystal structure of the 3-D compound [Fe(btzb)3][ClO4]2. The model of the latter shows two symmetry-related, interpenetrating Fe-btzb networks in which the iron(II) ions approach each other as close as 8.3 and 9.1 A.
