Association between low-frequency ultrasound and hip fractures - comparison with DXA-based BMD

Background New methods for diagnosing osteoporosis and evaluating fracture risk are being developed. We aim to study the association between low-frequency (LF) axial transmission ultrasound and hip fracture risk in a population-based sample of older women. Methods The study population consisted of 490 community-dwelling women (78–82 years). Ultrasound velocity (VLF) at mid-tibia was measured in 2006 using a low-frequency scanning axial transmission device. Bone mineral density (BMD) at proximal femur measured using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) was used as the reference method. Parvovirus B19-Associated Microvesicular Eruption

2015

We report on a 3-year-old girl with a microvesicular generalized rash in whom primary infection by parvovirus B19 was demonstrated by seroconversion. To our knowledge, this is the first instance of an eruption arising from parvovirus B19 with this peculiar clinical pattern.

Otoacoustic emissions: a new method to diagnose hearing impairment in children.

Otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) are epiphenomena of sensitive, amplifying processes during hearing which can be detected in persons with normal inner ear function. They originate from the cochlea and are interpreted as an energy leakage of cochlear processes, perhaps resulting from active outer hair cell movements. OAEs travel from the cochlea through the middle ear to the external auditory canal where they can be detected using sensitive miniature microphones. Distribution of osteonectin mRNA and protein during human embryonic and fetal development.

We investigated the temporal and spatial distribution of osteonectin during human embryonic and fetal development, using in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry. Osteonectin gene expression was generally found in cells exhibiting high rates of matrix production/proliferation. In mineralized tissue, a strong signal was obtained in osteoblasts, odontoblasts, and chondrocytes of the upper hypertrophic and proliferative zones. Transient expression of synaptogyrin in the ganglionic eminence of the human fetal brain

Summary The ganglionic eminence (GE) representing a conspicuous bulb-like elevation of the telencephalic proliferative zone has recently been shown to be involved in the establishment of cortical connections. This study demonstrates the presence of synaptogyrin-immunoreactivity in a large number of cell bodies of the human GE between 12 and 20 weeks of gestation. From the 20 th week onwards synaptogyrin expression sharply declines. No immunoreactive structures are detectable in the 23 rd week or later. Intestinal ischaemia during cardiac arrest and resuscitation: comparative analysis of extracellular metabolites by microdialysis.

Intestinal ischaemia is a major complication of shock syndromes causing translocation of bacteria and endotoxins and multiple organ failure in intensive care patients. The present study was designed to use microdialysis as a tool to monitor intestinal ischaemia after cardiac arrest and resuscitation in pigs. Spontaneous plaque rupture visualized by intravascular ultrasound.

An intravascular ultrasound examination was performed in order to evaluate an angiographically complicated lesion. Intravascular ultrasound was able to demonstrate spontaneous plaque rupture in a patient with recent acute subendocardial infarction. The inconclusive angiographic appearance was clarified by the intravascular examination and led us to conclude that the myocardial infarction was due to plaque rupture with subsequent thrombotic occlusion, which had spontaneously resolved by the time of the study.

Bleeding during transfer is the only parameter of patient anatomy and embryo quality that affects reproductive outcome: a prospective study.

There is very little information available regarding the relevance of the position of embryo replacement during ET and the different anatomic characteristics of the recipient in the transfer process and on the result of assisted reproduction techniques. We prospectively analyzed, using multivariate regression analysis, 375 ETs, 177 of which were from donated oocytes and 198 from patients' own oocytes, and we found no effect of the anatomic characteristics of the uterus on the chances of achieving pregnancy when data were analyzed according to patient age and embryo quality.
