Micellar electrokinetic chromatography with bile salts for predicting ecotoxicity of aromatic compounds.
2004
The retention factors of several aromatic compounds were obtained by micellar electrokinetic chromatography (MEKC) using cholate, taurocholate, deoxycholate and deoxytaurocholate as micellar systems. The possibility of using these retention factors to describe and predict several ecotoxicological activities of different aromatic compounds was evaluated. Adequate correlations retention–ecotoxicity (log LC50 in fish and daphnia, log EC50 in green algae and daphnia, chronic values in fish and green algae, bioconcentration factor, and soil sorption coefficient) were obtained for the micellar systems studied. The predictive ability of the models obtained for these micellar systems was compared. …
Uncertainty evaluation in power measurements with commercial data acquisition boards
2011
The paper deals with the metrological characterization of a digital wattmeter developed by using a personal computer, a shunt, two commercial data acquisition boards and commercial software. The uncertainty of the active power measurements is assessed individually characterizing the voltage channel, the current channel and the phase displacement measurement between the two channels. In particular, the uncertainty on the voltage and current rms measurements is evaluated by using an already proposed approach based on the Monte Carlo method and on the usage of five parameters, while the uncertainty on the phase angle is experimentally estimated. In order to validate the proposed approach for t…
Not just BLAST nt: WGS database joins the party
2019
AbstractSince its introduction in 1990 and with over 50k citations, the NCBI BLAST family has been an essential tool of in silico molecular biology. The BLAST nt database, based on the traditional divisions of GenBank, has been the default and most comprehensive database for nucleotide BLAST searches and for taxonomic classification software in metagenomics. Here we argue that this is no longer the case. Currently, the NCBI WGS database contains one billion reads (almost five times more than GenBank), and with 4.4 trillion nucleotides, WGS has about 14 times more nucleotides than GenBank. This ratio is growing with time. We advocate a change in the database paradigm in taxonomic classificat…
Attālinātā kontrole liela attāluma bezvadu enerģijas pārvadei izmantojot atgriezenisko saiti
2020
Second Generation of Freescoo Solar DEC Prototypes for Residential Applications
2015
Freescoo is an innovative all-in-one compact solar Desiccant Evaporative Cooling (DEC) air conditioner concept. Results of the first prototype developed were presented at SHC Conference last year. Now a second generation of freescoo prototypes for applications in residential and small office buildings have been installed in Italy at ENEA Casaccia and at UNIPA. The thermodynamic cycle is based on the use of fixed and cooled adsorption beds and advanced evaporative cooling concepts. The adsorption bed, which is a fin and tube heat exchanger packed with silica gel grains, allows simultaneous dehumidification and cooling of the process air. The indirect evaporative cooling process, operated dow…
On-line analysis of carbonyl compounds with derivatization in aqueous extracts of atmospheric particulate PM10 by in-tube solid-phase microextraction…
2011
Abstract A new device for carbonyl compounds based on coupling on-line and miniaturizing both, sample pretreatment and chromatographic separation, is reported. Two capillary columns, a GC capillary column (95% methyl–5% phenyl substituted backbone, 70 cm × 0.32 mm i.d., 3 μm film thickness) in the injection valve for in-tube solid-phase microextraction (IT-SPME) and a Zorbax SB C18 (150 mm × 0.5 mm i.d., 5 μm particle diameter) LC capillary column were employed. Different combinations of IT-SPME and derivatization using 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNPH) were examined for mixtures containing 15 carbonyl compounds (aliphatic, aromatic and unsaturated aldehydes and ketones). A screening analys…
Determination of tea tree oil terpenes by headspace gas chromatography mass spectrometry
2016
An alternative procedure was developed for determining quality control of terpenes in tea tree oil commercial samples. The method is based on static headspace gas chromatography mass spectrometry measurements. Absolute limits of detection ranged from 1 ng for p-cymene to 71 ng for terpinen-4-ol. The accuracy of the developed methodology was evaluated by comparing the obtained eucalyptol and terpinen-4-ol concentrations with those provided for a certified sample and by comparing the developed procedure with literature tea tree oil analysis methodology. In the same way, spiked commercial samples provided recovery values ranging between 94% and 100% for all the target analytes with relative st…
New micromethod combining miniaturized matrix solid-phase dispersion and in-tube in-valve solid-phase microextraction for estimating polycyclic aroma…
2008
Abstract Miniaturized matrix solid-phase dispersion (MSPD) was developed for the extraction of common polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from bivalve samples (100 mg, dry weight). Additional clean-up and analyte enrichment was accomplished by in-tube solid-phase microextraction (SPME). For this purpose the extracts collected after MSPD were diluted with water and injected into a capillary column coated with the extractive phase. This capillary column was connected to the analytical column by means of a switching valve. Separation and quantification of the PAHs were carried out using a monolithic LC column and fluorescence detection. Since the in-tube SPME device allowed the processing …
Improvement of the atomic fluorescence determination of mercury by using multicommutation
2002
Atomic fluorescence spectrometry (AFS) determination of Hg has been improved by exploiting the possibilities of the multicommutation approach in order to outline a fully mechanised system which supplies the same sensitivity as the use of continuous measurements, reducing drastically the reagents consumed and waste generation. The use of multicommutation with a simultaneous reduction of the liquid–gas separator volume and the insertion point modification of argon transport gas provides a sensitivity of the AFS measurements of 300 mV ng−1 ml (using a full scale of 1000 mV), a limit of detection (3 s) of 1.3 ng l−1 and relative standard deviation values below 0.1% for 10 independent measuremen…
Preliminary Results on the Use of Leather Chrome Shavings for Air Passive Sampling
2012
A new passive sampler based on low-density polyethylene (LDPE) layflat tube filled with chrome shavings from tannery waste residues was evaluated to determine volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in indoor and outdoor areas. VOCs were directly determined by head space-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-GC-MS) without any pretreatment of the sampler and avoiding the use of solvents. Limit of detection values ranging from 20 to 75 ng sampler−1and good repeatability values were obtained for VOCs under study with relative standard deviation values from 2.8 to 9.6% except for carbon disulfide for which it was 22.5%. The effect of the amount of chrome shavings per sampler was studied and resul…
