Do the contact angle and line tension of surface-attached droplets depend on the radius of curvature?

Results from Monte Carlo simulations of wall-attached droplets in the three-dimensional Ising lattice gas model and in a symmetric binary Lennard-Jones fluid, confined by antisymmetric walls, are analyzed, with the aim to estimate the dependence of the contact angle $(\Theta)$ on the droplet radius $(R)$ of curvature. Sphere-cap shape of the wall-attached droplets is assumed throughout. An approach, based purely on "thermodynamic" observables, e.g., chemical potential, excess density due to the droplet, etc., is used, to avoid ambiguities in the decision which particles belong (or do not belong, respectively) to the droplet. Stochastic resonance in a metal-oxide memristive device

Abstract The stochastic resonance phenomenon has been studied experimentally and theoretically for a state-of-art metal-oxide memristive device based on yttria-stabilized zirconium dioxide and tantalum pentoxide, which exhibits bipolar filamentary resistive switching of anionic type. The effect of white Gaussian noise superimposed on the sub-threshold sinusoidal driving signal is analyzed through the time series statistics of the resistive switching parameters, the spectral response to a periodic perturbation and the signal-to-noise ratio at the output of the nonlinear system. The effect of alkaline treatment on mechanical properties of kenaf fibers and their epoxy composites

Abstract In this work, kenaf fibers were pre-treated in a NaOH solution (6% in weight) at room temperature for two different periods (48 and 144 h). The chemical treatment of kenaf fibers for 48 h allowed to clean their surface removing each impurity whereas 144 h of immersion time had detrimental effect on the fibers surface and, consequently, on their mechanical properties. Untreated and NaOH treated kenaf fibers (i.e. for 48 h) were also used as reinforcing agent of epoxy resin composites. Depletion-induced percolation in networks of nanorods.

Above a certain density threshold, suspensions of rod-like colloidal particles form system-spanning networks. Using Monte Carlo simulations, we investigate how the depletion forces caused by spherical particles affect these networks in isotropic suspensions of rods. Although the depletion forces are strongly anisotropic and favor alignment of the rods, the percolation threshold of the rods decreases significantly. The relative size of the effect increases with the aspect ratio of the rods. The structural changes induced in the suspension by the depletant are characterized in detail and the system is compared to an ideal fluid of freely interpenetrable rods.

Effect of mixing and spatial dimension on the glass transition

We study the influence of composition changes on the glass transition of binary hard disc and hard sphere mixtures in the framework of mode coupling theory. We derive a general expression for the slope of a glass transition line. Applied to the binary mixture in the low concentration limits, this new method allows a fast prediction of some properties of the glass transition lines. The glass transition diagram we find for binary hard discs strongly resembles the random close packing diagram. Compared to 3D from previous studies, the extension of the glass regime due to mixing is much more pronounced in 2D where plasticization only sets in at larger size disparities. A new strategy for effective learning in population Monte Carlo sampling

In this work, we focus on advancing the theory and practice of a class of Monte Carlo methods, population Monte Carlo (PMC) sampling, for dealing with inference problems with static parameters. We devise a new method for efficient adaptive learning from past samples and weights to construct improved proposal functions. It is based on assuming that, at each iteration, there is an intermediate target and that this target is gradually getting closer to the true one. Computer simulations show and confirm the improvement of the proposed strategy compared to the traditional PMC method on a simple considered scenario.

Parametric and nonparametric methods to generate time-varying surrogate data.

We present both nonparametric and parametric approaches to generating time-varying surrogate data. Nonparametric and parametric approaches are based on the use of the short-time Fourier transform and a time-varying autoregressive model, respectively. Time-varying surrogate data (TVSD) can be used to determine the statistical significance of the linear and nonlinear coherence function estimates. Two advantages of the TVSD are that it keeps one from having to make an arbitrary decision about the significance of the coherence value, and it properly takes into account statistical significance levels, which may change with time. A Preference-Based Evolutionary Algorithm for Multi-Objective Optimization

In this paper, we discuss the idea of incorporating preference information into evolutionary multi-objective optimization and propose a preference-based evolutionary approach that can be used as an integral part of an interactive algorithm. One algorithm is proposed in the paper. At each iteration, the decision maker is asked to give preference information in terms of his or her reference point consisting of desirable aspiration levels for objective functions. Fractional Laplacians and Levy flights in bounded domains

We address L\'{e}vy-stable stochastic processes in bounded domains, with a focus on a discrimination between inequivalent proposals for what a boundary data-respecting fractional Laplacian (and thence the induced random process) should actually be. Versions considered are: restricted Dirichlet, spectral Dirichlet and regional (censored) fractional Laplacians. The affiliated random processes comprise: killed, reflected and conditioned L\'{e}vy flights, in particular those with an infinite life-time. The related concept of quasi-stationary distributions is briefly mentioned.
