Composite layer-based analytical models for tool–chip interface temperatures in machining medium carbon steels with multi-layer coated cutting tools

Abstract This investigation is devoted to the thermal problems in dry orthogonal turning of a C45 medium carbon steel with natural contact tools treated with multi-layer coatings with an intermediate Al 2 O 3 layer. New hybrid analytical models for estimating heat partition to the chip and the tool–chip interface temperatures were proposed. The effect of wear on the tetragonal-to-monoclinic transformation and the residual stress distribution in zirconia-toughened alumina cutting tools

Abstract Zirconia-toughened alumina cutting tools have been examined after machining an AISI 1040 steel. The Raman spectrum of zirconia and the fluorescence spectrum from alumina have been used to determine the extent of the tetragonal-to-monoclinic (t-m) transformation and the residual stresses in and around the worn-out crater, respectively. Although about 15% vol. m-zirconia is present even in a brand new cutting tool, it was shown that the crater region undergoes the t-m transformation up to 40% vol. Use of FRP fabrics and stainless steel grids for strengthening brick masonry columns

This work presents the results of an experimental investigation on 42 solid clay brick columns internally strengthened by FRP fabrics or stainless steel grids placed in the horizontal joints of mortar. Monotonic compressive loading tests were carried out under concentric and eccentric load. Eccentric tests were carried out loading the specimens on a reduced area with respect to the entire crosssection producing a D-region. The reinforcing of every course and of alternate courses are studied. The effectiveness of the proposed strengthening techniques is discussed, in terms of increase in strength and energy required to the collapse of brick columns. Abstract The compressive behavior of lightweight fiber reinforced concrete confined with transverse reinforcement consisting of steel stirrups or spirals was analyzed. Pumice stone and expanded clay aggregates were utilized to decrease the weight of the composite; hooked steel fibers were also added. Steel fiber-reinforced concrete corbels:experimental behavior and shear strength prediction

Corbels are structural members often used in reinforced concrete structures to transfer vertical and horizontal forces to principal members. This paper presents experimental research regarding the flexural behavior of corbels in plain and fibrous concrete and in the presence of steel bars. Parametric study of laser welding of copper to austenitic stainless steel

Abstract Welding of copper to stainless steel is challenging because of sharp difference in thermophysical properties of materials and the presence of miscibility gap in Fe-Cu system. The parametric study of continuous Yb:YAG laser welding between copper and austenitic stainless steel 316L has been performed. The influence of laser power, welding speed and beam offset from joint line on weld composition, microstructure and tensile properties was studied. Structural Behavior of Telescopic Steel Pipe for a Full-Scale 60 kW Wind Turbine Tower

A simple analytical model, including local effects due to buckling and shear to moment interaction, was developed to pre-dict the load-carrying capacity of CHS tubes under flexure and shear. A finite-element analysis with ABAQUS Code was also conducted for validation of the proposed model. By properly modeling the imperfection effects due to the ovalization of steel tube, a good correlation of the structural response and failure mode was also achieved, and a good correlation with the analytical model was also achieved. Mechanical and cohesion properties of brass plated steel cords in a sulphurizing environment

The mechanical and cohesion properties of brass plated steel cords have been investigated in dry hydrogen sulphide between 25 and 450° C. The extents of elastic and plastic regions, obtained from slow strain rate technique data have been defined, and the preferential site of decohesion tends to be the brass-steel interface.

Interactions in dual species biofilms between Listeria monocytogenes EGD-e and several strains of Staphylococcus aureus.

International audience; Six environmental isolates of Staphylococcus aureus and one collection strain were investigated for their ability to form monospecies biofilms and dual species biofilms with Listeria monocytogenes EGD-e on stainless steel coupons. All isolates were able to grow as biofilms but their ability to form monospecies biofilms differed. The population of L. monocytogenes EGD-e in dual species biofilms was not affected by the presence of S. aureus isolates except for strain CIP 53.156. Role of Molybdenum on the Electronic Properties of Passive Films on Stainless Steels

Potentiostatic polarization of different stainless steel grades with a mirror surface finishing was performed in order to investigate the role of Mo on stainless steels corrosion behaviour. In the attempt to gain more insight into transpassive dissolution mechanism, passive films were grown in neutral aqueous solution (pH ∼ 7) at different polarizing potentials ranging from passive to transpassive conditions.
