Comparison between mercury intrusion porosimetry and nuclear magnetic resonance relaxometry to study the pore size distribution of limestones treated…
2019
Abstract Pore-space properties, such as pore-size distribution and connected porosity, are relevant factors in the evaluation of the performance of a consolidation treatment. In this study, two different techniques – Mercury Intrusion Porosimetry (MIP) and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Relaxometry (NMRR) – were adopted to study the compatibility and the efficacy of a new consolidation product for limestones. This work aims at comparing and combining data obtained by MIP and NMRR; to confirm the relationship between the quantitative results of MIP and the qualitative ones of NMRR, a calibration which leads to correlate T2 distribution and pore size distribution has been applied. Experimental re…
Ceramics, Marbles and Stones in the Light of Neutrons: Characterization by Various Neutron Methods
2016
In this chapter we give a brief overview of neutron based analytical investigations applied to study archaeological ceramics, and different types of stones. Since the vast majority of archaeological objects are made of ceramics and various stones—all are of geological origin—, one of the key objectives of these studies to determine the origin of raw material. This research is called provenance research, and a wide range of neutron based methods are applicable in it. Following a very basic, user-oriented description of the methods, we introduce examples from our everyday practice. The examples are about provenance of prehistoric stone tools, about the sources of 4th–3rd c. B.C. millennium li…
Querns and mills during Roman times at the northern frontier of the Roman Empire (Belgium, Northern France, Southern Netherlands, Western Germany): U…
2016
International audience; This paper presents the results of a multi-disciplinary provenance study of querns and millstones during the Roman period (1st-4th century CE) in the northern part of the Roman Empire (provinces of Gallia Belgica and Germania Inferior). Comparative petrographical, mineralogical and geochemical analysis allowed an international team of archaeologists and geologists to identify the different raw materials used for the manufacturing of querns and millstones. As a result, (litho-) stratigraphic assignments as well as geological-geographical provenances are suggested or corroborated for the broad spectrum of these natural geo-materials. We give evidence for the exploitati…
Toward a holistic environmental impact assessment of marble quarrying and processing: proposal of a novel easy-to-use IPAT-based method.
2016
Marble is a natural dimension stone that is widely used in building due to its resistance and esthetic qualities. Unfortunately, some concerns have arisen regarding its production process because quarrying and processing activities demand significant amounts of energy and greatly affect the environment. Further, performing an environmental analysis of a production process such as that of marble requires the consideration of many environmental aspects (e.g., noise, vibrations, dust and waste production, energy consumption). Unfortunately, the current impact accounting tools do not seem to be capable of considering all of the major aspects of the (marble) production process that may affect th…
Ureteral Stones: Shockwave Lithotripsy or Ureteroscopy, Which is Best?
2021
Background Renal stone disease is common and can cause emergency presentation with acute pain due to ureteric colic. International guidelines have stated the need for a multicentre randomised controlled trial (RCT) to determine whether a non-invasive outpatient (shockwave lithotripsy [SWL]) or surgical (ureteroscopy [URS]) intervention should be the first-line treatment for those needing active intervention. This has implications for shaping clinical pathways. Objective To report a pragmatic multicentre non-inferiority RCT comparing SWL with URS. Design, setting, and participants This trial tested for non-inferiority of up to two sessions of SWL compared with URS as initial treatment for ur…
Finte Pietre. Architettura dell'apparire e conservazione dei valori culturali
2012
Papers on the Conservation of Ancient Monuments and Remains. John Ruskin, Gilbert Scott e la Carta inglese della Conservazione (Londra, 1865)
2019
The report contains the results of a thermographic survey carried out on the external surfaces of the Di Lorenzo palace in Palermo, on behalf of private clients who have the protection of the architectural heritage. The diagnostic analysis is aimed at identifying the detachment of Li Vigni artificial stone plast…
Le superfici di pietra artefatta. Conoscenza e diagnosi per la conservazione.
2009
The PhD thesis is focused on the study of architectural finishes of artificial stone patented in Italy. The research, after presenting the recipes and methods to simulate natural stones, proposes an analytical diagnostic method for the conservation of architectural surfaces and shows the result…
Estimation of Pyruvic acid in serum and saliva among healthy and potentially malignant disorder subjects – a stepping stone for cancer screening?
2014
Background: According to Warburg’s effect, the rate of glycolysis increases in cancerous cells. This will increase overall levels of pyruvic acid. The present on-going study was conducted to estimate the levels of pyruvic acid in saliva and serum in normal, oral PMD subjects. Material and Methods: A total of 50 subjects in healthy, PMD of the oral cavity individuals were selected based on clinical and histological criteria. Collected saliva and serum samples were subjected to pyruvic acid level estimation using biochemical analysis. Results: Of the 50 participants 25 (13: Males; 12: Females) & 25 (16: Males; 9: Females) were PMD group. Independent samples t test showed statistically signifi…
