In recent decades, the abandonment of the teleological perspective concerning the formation of the modern state has made it possible to rethink the nature of the European monarchies between the fifteenth and seventeenth centuries and to read the center/periphery pair no longer in antithetical terms, but of integration and complementarity. This essay analyses certain passages by the 19th century Sicilian historiography on the Spanish vice-reign in the island where the main tendency was the anti-Spanish movement. The joint opinion of the historians, here analyzed, consisted of a great love for their country based on a nostalgic cult of its indipendent reign and its institutions. The latter were a constant reason of consolation compared to the present reality, which seemed very disappointing and awkward if compared with the "mythical" previos ages. The essay summarizes the parable of the affirmation of a teratological perspective in Sicily through some of its protagonists. What explanation do science and naturalists mature in the face of the disorienting epiphany of monstrous births? What lags and discontinuities are generated - in this path that is anything but linear and continuous - by a religious discourse that insists for a long time on the sacramental question and on the baptism of this unusual creatures? These are upheavals that make explicit the attempt by theology to still maintain an active dialogue with a medical discipline that in the modern age is gradually becoming the protagonist of an impetuous development.

The essay focuses on the first mission to southern Borneo carried out by the Theatine priest Father Antonino Ventimiglia, whose biographical profile is reconstructed, following his traces, retracing the steps of his journey through an extensive use of narrative and archival sources. Through such sources the contextual complexity of Father Ventimiglia’s mission emerges, far beyond the circumstances in which it had been originally planned.
