Drowned Landscapes: The Rediscovered Archaeological Heritage of the Mosul Dam Reservoir

Like natural catastrophes or armed conflicts, resource extraction projects herald the alteration or destruction of natural and cultural landscapes alike. Dam construction is a major threat to cultural heritage in Western Asian archaeology. One event may result in obliterating hundreds of sites, most of which never reappear or do so only sporadically following cyclical water fluctuation. Destruction of sites remains ongoing, necessitating constant assessment of damage and the establishment of strategies of documentation and maintenance. AbstractDuring the eleventh and twelfth centuries the Church began a process of renovation (renovatio) and the city of Rome was given new meanings. Antiquity is part of the identity of the Eternal City; the reuse or reframing of aspects of antiquity inevitably transformed the image of Rome. Public spaces, architecture and objects were given new Christian readings. Inscriptions, present both in sacred and secular settings, played an important role. A similar rewriting can also be found in travel literature and descriptions of the city, such as in the Mirabilia urbis Rome, where ancient monuments were re-interpreted to demonstrate the superiority of Christianity. La tesi nasce dal tentativo di colmare un vuoto storiografico negli studi delle relazioni artistiche e culturali tra Sicilia e Malta. L’intento primario è stato quello di riportare alla luce manufatti d’arte decorativa siciliana sull’Isola dei Cavalieri principalmente relativi al periodo della loro illuminata permanenza (1530-1798), cercando nello stesso tempo di ritessere le trame della storia alla ricerca di artisti, soprattutto orafi e argentieri, che ivi si erano momentaneamente o definitivamente trasferiti per praticare la propria arte e trarne profitto.
